Juniper is just saying what she wished others would say to her — doing what she wishes would happen during her own terrible shifts, on her own wretched days off. It's therapeutic, in a way.

Juniper regards the bill but does not accept it. She just stares. She looks — wide-eyed, shocked.

Slowly: "You shouldn't carry around that much cash. You know?"

The comment catches her off guard and for some reason, she feels ashamed.

“It’s just what I have,” she shrugs, wishing she would just take the money already. Seconds that feel like hours pass and her voice strains when she finally speaks, “I'm sorry? You were just really nice? And it's nothing. I mean, it’s not not nothing. I—uh—”

She can feel the panic mounting, so Evie does what she does best: she flees, leaving the money and her dignity behind.

"Thanks for the coffee, but you really don't have to sit here with me. I'm embarrassed enough as it is." The tears had dried and the warm beverage had soothed the mental breakdown, but she'd rather not be an even bigger inconvenience by forcing onto her any small talk. Even if her heart still felt like it would burst out of her chest. Years later and Evie still found triggers everywhere, even in the midst of a dinner rush in a small diner. She slides a hundred dollar bill across the table, "Here, keep the change."
