Black Mirror 7.03 "Hotel Reverie"
Closeted 1940s old hollywood actress who died tragically finally finds love with another woman decades after her death when her consciousness gets plugged into a remake of her most iconic film. Literally peak storytelling
Got me sobbing too
I have more staging thoughts. So. Microphones.
Microphones can be a really fun staging device to establish what kind of story youre telling. Giving your characters an actual physical microphone gives a story a presentational, fourth-wall-breaking air, and in the setting of Warriors visually calls to mind the hip hop emcees who will soon start popping up in the Bronx.
In the beginning of the musical, theres at all times one distinguished speaker, and everyone else speaking is just chiming in (with the exception of when the DJ is on stage) so having a microphone also helps visually sort through the massive ensemble number of Survive The Night to highlight who are the important people on stage. I think the DJ should have her own like old timey radio microphone that she carries around but when she introduced the Bronx she hands them a more standard microphone which then gets passed from Borough to Borough throughout the song.
Cleon has it for Roll Call, even though Ajax and co still interrupt her. The Warriors trade it around for the Cypher (prop work!) and then, during Make Way For Cyrus, Masai marches over to Cleon to get her to hand over the mic (this is fun. They get to have a silent interaction Before Everything) and bring it to Cyrus, who has it for If You Can Count.
And by If You Can Count, the audience understands how this works. They've had the microphone for four songs now. They get the bit. Maybe they even saw the obc of Spring Awakening. They get how Microphones In Musicals work. Which is what makes it surprising when Cyrus gets shot and disappears off stage. With the microphone. And then its just gone. The world changes, fundamentally, in that moment. Cleon should have the microphone in Derailed, the rules we've established should dictate that she has it. But she doesn't. Because Cyrus is gone. And so when she says "I didnt do this," nobody hears her.

I cant even get out of bed
Something something, Rembrandt singing Fox's "when you woke up today" part in Derailed with her, something something, Fox singing it against the captain in Reunion Square, something something, Rembrandt having to watch Fox get thrown onto the tracks and actually die that night when she was just saying "I didn't think we could die today either" and now having to live knowing that she made it out and Fox didn't
You know, I was happy once
Okay. I'm making a PSA because I love the Warriors Concept Album fandom very dearly and I want this out there.
Adaptations are NOT remakes. Adaptations do not have to follow each other's canon and something that is true in one adaptation does not mean it is true in the other. Themes change from work to work. Facts change. Characters change. If you are upset about something being different in one adaptation, go consume the one that displays the canon you want and please do not attack the people who don't.
I read the '65 novel. I watched the '79 movie. I read the '09 comics. And obviously I love the '24 concept album. There are sixty years between the first and most recent adaptation of this story, the former of which is based off Xenophon's "Anabasis" from ancient Greece. There are differences. And the choices behind making those differences influence the themes, content, and overall messages of the adaptation they produce.
The album's themes and messages are wildly different from the novel and the movie and that's okay! They're meant to be. The themes they do share are conveyed in different ways. If it were meant to be a remake, LMM and Eisa Davis would have cast the Warriors as men again at the very least. If you like the novel or the movie better than the album, good for you. Go consume those medias and leave us out of it. Don't come here spreading toxicity in a small and so far relatively calm fandom because you don't agree with the choices made for the new adaptation. I'm not putting my album takes in the movie tag so keep movie takes out of the album tag, please and thank you.
Also, specifically for the takes I've seen comparing the album to the novel, y'know what? The album draws inspiration from the movie, which was so wildly different from the novel that the author Sol Yurick himself hated it. You can go read that here.
And if any of my "album only" people (as we were so lovingly called) want to look into the other adaptations: The novel can be found on most e-book services under "The Warriors" by Sol Yurick. The movie I have found on YouTube (for purchase, I haven't found a reliable place to pirate it from). And here is a link to the movie's sequel comics.
This is not a callout post. It is merely a PSA. If you want more information on what I'm talking about, private message me.
not to be brash or anything but i wanna see more ppl talk about Rembrandt's connection with Fox. Like they're both the youngest gang members, they're both quiet, they both have niche interests, someone mentioned how they shared the motif 'Now every move that I make is a bid to survive, keep me alive / When you woke up today you didn't think you could die, neither did I'. Ppl only talk about Rem and Ajax even tho i think Rem interacted with Fox the most in the album than anyone else. I wish more discussions were around Rem's relation with baby Fox š„ŗ
THEYRE SISTERS YOUR HONOR. PICTURE PROTECTIVE SISTER REM DURING 'WE GOT YOU'. PICTURE THE TWO SITTING NEXT TO ONE ANOTHER QUIETLY, REM DRAWING AND FOX PLAYING WITH A GAMEBOY. PICTURE FOX JOKINGLY ASKING REM TO DRAW HER CUZ SHE'S THE PRETTIEST. PICTURE REM SPRAYPAINTING A PICTURE OF A FOX ON A TRAIN. DO YOU SEE THE VISION.

The way this musical has a chokehold on me and this is just the icing on the cakeš
Quiet Girls donāt make it home..
I had to do a sketch of Fox (Phillipa Soo), the Warriors musical doesnāt have enough art when the singers did a killer photoshoot for the concept album. RIP Fox, you deserved to see Coney againā¦

something something you ever think about how six is haunting her own narrative? how she was doomed to die before we ever even met her before we even see her in the earliest portion of the canon? a sacrificial lamb who is now drenched in the blood of everyone she has failed, betrayed, loved, hurt, and lost, the only one with the audacity to survive? to the greeks, in a tragedy the only happy ending is death and here six remains hated by everyone including herself and oh so alive to suffer, to be the protagonist because the narrative lost its narrator and no one will let her die
#if i had a nickel for every time this happened to mikey madison, iād have two nickels. which isnāt a lot, but itās weird that it happened twice
