Chapter 9 - Please forget everything that happened
As soon as you put your phone down, you could hear some bickering coming from the other side of the door before silence and a knock. You raised your eyebrow as you were not expecting anyone to be here and had actually thought that the person on the other side might be visiting someone else in the room since this was the nurse’s office. You glanced around before mentally face-palming yourself. There was no one else other than you.
“Hello?” You spoke up as the door quietly creaked open. You were greeted by four unexpected boys: two whom you had created tight bonds with out of nowhere and the other two who you might or might not have worsen your relationships with. “Makki, Mattsun?” You saw the two boys pouring in first before the other two. “Oikawa and Iwaizumi? What are you guys doing here?”
At the sound of your voice, the four boys turned in your direction, heading straight to you. Makki and Mattsun sat on the side of your bed looking at you. “How weak were you?” Makki asked first. “You managed to scare all of us in the test of courage but even before you entered your own test of courage, down you go.” He stuck his tongue out.
“I expected better from you, Y/N,” Mattsun chirped in, earning both of them punches from Iwaizumi.
“This is why I didn’t want you guys to come,” he grumbled. “Aren’t you supposed to check up on her? Is this the definition of check up?”
“It would’ve been better if you two were with me,” you sighed. “So I could’ve knocked you two unconscious instead of my cheery tangerine.”
“I would’ve pulled an uppercut on you,” Mattsun commented.
“Makki would be my body shield… unwillingly,” you added.
“Okay stop you guys,” Iwa cut in. “Anyways, we’re here to check up on you. Are you alright, Y/N?”
“Thanks for asking,” you gave him a slight smile. “I’m fine now but please help me with a small favour: forget everything that had happened. Noya had it on camera.”
“Never.”
“No.”
“Whatever you say, Y/N.”
And this earned another hard punch on Mattsun and Makki.
“I expected you to be braver than whatever you pulled yesterday, Y/N-chan,” Oikawa added on.
“If you wanted to go one on one right now, Oikawa, I would do it in a heartbeat,” you remarked.
“Oh! So you really want to go that far is it, Y/N?” Oikawa’s voice heightened.
“I’m voting for Y/N,” Makki commented, earning a nod from Mattsun and another punch from Iwa.
“No fighting!” Iwa tried to stress for the nth time. “Please, this isn’t turning into another battle. I have enough on my plate please.”
“We can lessen the stress on your plate by dealing with Oikawa, Iwa-chan,” you smiled sweetly at the former.
“And we can guarantee it!” Mattsun grinned.
“No! And you know what, visitation time is over!” Iwa started peeling everyone off your bed one by one. “I’m glad you’re alright, Y/N. I should’ve come alone instead of all of these people…”
“Wouldn’t you be in a blushing mess?” Oikawa asked and this earned a kick from the former.
“Shut up would you?” Iwa snapped before pushing Oikawa out of the door. “See you soon, I guess,” he gave a slight smile at you before closing the door.
You glanced at the closed door and the silence. You shrugged. Guess it was about time you made an appearance to your entire team.
A/N: Hi, so sorry for the lack of updates so here's one earlier! I will be exploring a lot with other schools too so look forward to it ^^
Kiyoko had left you in charge of tomorrow’s itinerary since she was busy helping the other managers at the dining hall but there were enough hands, thus that was why you were alone in the managers’ room. You were having a little struggle with the work given since you had never done it before so Daichis’s text felt like a huge relief to you to step away from your current work.
Grabbing a jacket from your futon, you hurried out of the door. You struggled with your sneakers as you held onto the door that you didn’t notice someone passing by, causing you to lose your grip on the door knob.
“Woah!” Someone caught you right before you plummeted to the ground. You could feel your heart froze at that moment because you obviously, nearly fell on your face. “Are you okay?” The same voice spoke again, breaking you out of your daze.
You glanced up to find a concerned looking boy staring back at you. You quickly scrambled out of his arms in shock and fell onto the ground. “H-hi… Akaashi is it?” You tried to remember the name of the boy from the list of boys in the training camp.
“Woah there, I’m not going to bite,” he smiled slightly as he held his hand out, waiting for you to grab it so that he could pull you up. “I was actually heading towards hall one to draw lots and I thought I should come over to guide you to the room… since you are kind of unfamiliar of this place… am I right?”
“You might be right about that,” you replied with a small smile as you grabbed his hand, letting him pull you up as if you weighted nothing. “I had been busy with helping the managers that I didn’t have time to explore or familiarise myself with this place or even had time to train with the boys.”
“You… train with the boys?” Akaashi raised his eyebrows at your comments as the two of you started walking together.
“Yeah, long story short it is a way to get some exercise into my routine. I know no managers do that but I do,” you grinned. “Now since you’ve asked me a question, it’s my turn: how did you know I was supposed to go draw lots as well?”
You swear you could see Akaashi blush slightly but he turned his head too fast for you to verify it. Nonetheless, you averted your attention from him, focusing on the path in front of you as he took his time to answer.
“I… I might have overheard Daichi-san complaining… about a certain manager after looking up from his phone,” he explained. “And since your two other managers are helping at the dining hall, the only other available manager is you.”
“That’s very observant of you,” you grinned. “Thank you.”
He gave you a slight nod before pointing at one of the doors in front of you, with a signboard that said ‘Hall 1’. He pushed the door open and you stepped in, noticing a couple more people who had arrived before you.
You recognised most of the people there such as the tall Russian boy and the shorter third year libero from Nekoma arguing away to be Yaku and Lev. However, there were two other people who you had never seen before during practice… but they looked so familiar with their teal jerseys.
“Aren’t those guys from Aoba Johsai?” You halted, nudging Akaashi. “Wait, I recognise the both of them!” You started nudging harder at the Fukorodani setter. “It’s angry but kind boy and his feral overgrown child!”
“Excuse me, what did you just call us?” The Nekoma libero overheard you.
“Not you, Yaku!” Lev said. “You can’t be overgrown if you’re still short.”
“The overgrown child is you, Lev! We’re supposed to be practicing receives but you decided to come here instead” Yaku argued back.
“No, I’m not talking about you two!” You hushed them immediately and pointed at the two teal boys. “Them. I haven’t seen them at practice at all today”
“And which one am I supposed to be?” The light brown hair scoffed, turning his attention towards you as he crossed his arms. “If you need to know, I am neither as I am the most perfect setter and captain-“
“Shittykawa can you please shut up for a second and think about it? Obviously you’re the overgrown feral child,” his friend smacked him on the back to shut him up. “Even though it’s kind of hurtful to call me angry but I’ll take kind-“
“OBJECTION! When are you ever kind, Iwa-chan?” Oikawa jumped in.
“Shush it!” Iwaizumi said, giving Oikawa another punch on the back.
“To answer your question, Y/N,” Akaashi intercepted before things got even messier. “They could only come after their activities today thus why they just arrived. We took this opportunity to learn from Aoba Johsai as well.”
“Now that that’s done, can we draw lots now for the test of courage? Lev, this ungrateful giant, needs to practice his receives,” Yaku asked.
“How would we be doing it?” Akaashi asked.
“I know! What about rock, paper, scissors?” Lev offered.
“That’s a great idea! But I have a better one!” You joined in. “Why don’t I pick first and you guys argue it amongst yourself?”
“I didn’t know you were such a ruthless person, Y/N,” Lev pouted.
“Now you know,” you winked at him as you reached your hand into the box that was sitting in the middle of everyone and pulled out a piece of paper. Slowly, everyone else took their turns and opened their papers together.
You glanced at the paper in your hand and it made you freeze. The neat handwriting on the paper had the name of Aoba Johsai on it. And oh god… you knew how bad Karasuno’s relationship was with them and yet, they were the ones who you have gotten.
You glanced at Akaashi who was looking at your expression and gave him the widest grin you could ever offer, trying to cover the distraught look that was written a mere second ago. He opened his mouth to say something but you waved him off. “It’s nothing if you’re wondering. T-This is great! I can’t… I can’t… I can’t wait,” you tried to say those words out but it turned out to be harder than you could even say.
You turned away almost immediately and headed towards the doors to leave. You were panicking mentally but you had to pull a confident back since the boys were still staring at you.
Since Aoba Johsai was the school that Karasuno had gotten to scare, you were determined, let it be the best scare Aoba Johsai was going to get. However, how were you going to execute your plan when you had pissed them off even before knowing them? You gave a big sigh as you closed the door behind you and you decided to trust yourself. You were going to do it. You were going to terrorise Aoba Johsai in the best way possible. But before you could plan out how you were going to scare them, you sent a text to your team:
“Hinata, you never change do you?” you patted his back as you pulled him out of the bus. After a couple of mishaps, you were finally at the volleyball training camp. It’s your first time out to Tokyo because you never had the time to ever experience anything at all so this is all new to you and you were quite excited… despite the first years’ antics.
“S-sorry, Y/N,” Hinata blushed slightly as he looked away from you. He was a little embarrassed over what had just happened but you had to keep assuring him that it was all okay.
“HINATA SHOYO YOU IDIOT!” another voice bursted through the bus and you glanced over to find a flushed Kageyama with your leggings on. There were not any other pants on the bus as all your luggages were stored in the bus’s storage compartment but you were lucky there weren’t any more space for yours thus that was how you were able to offer Kageyama your pants.
You quickly looked away trying to hold your laughter in. You don’t know why but seeing guys in leggings was amusing. The way the leggings hugged their legs emphasised on how thin their legs were even if they were really muscular because that was what leggings do.
“Kageyama, I don’t think you want to be shouting,” Sugawara mentioned, trying to hold his feral child down. “You don’t want to draw that much more attention with… with those… with those leggings.”
You snorted over what you heard and you could feel Suga’s eyes boring holes into you for laughing as it nearly pushed him into laughing as well.
“Y/N! Please take Hinata to the washroom!” Suga called after you. You coughed and nodded at the former. “You got it!”
“Shoyo!” Another voice greeted the pair and you founded a duo-haired tone boy walking up to you guys, along with a bunch of other boys wearing red jackets.
Hinata lifted his head and his face was plastered with a grin. “Kenma!” He exclaimed, hurrying towards the boy excitedly. “How are you?”
As you watched the duo catching up, your eyes went to the group of boys behind the pair. “Hello there!” Daichi greeted them as he came up from behind. “We meet again I see.”
“I’m surprised you didn’t attempt to wear ‘trendy’ things,” a taller boy with black hair covering his right side commented and that made Daichi closed his eyes before reopening them with another wider grin.
“That was only one time, Kuroo,” he whispered, trying to not let you overhear as he knew a hundred percent you would start bombarding questions onto him.
“TANAKA! YOU HAVE ANOTHER GIRL MANAGER?” A voice shotted to the right as you watched a dude with a mohawk nearly tackling Tanaka down.
“THAT’S RIGHT YAMAMOTO! THAT’S THE POWER OF KARASUNO!” Tanaka replied back proudly and you rolled your eyes at him.
“THAT’S WHY I ASKED YOU IF WE COULD GET A GIRL MANAGER TOO, KUROO-SAN!” Yamamoto pouted.
“Then you go find one! Didn’t you say you could communicate with girls well?” Kuroo sighed before casting you an apology look as he bowed slightly. “Sorry about that,” he whispered, blushing a little.
“DO I HEAR A HINATA SHOYO?” You glanced at the main entrance of the training camp where you heard the voice from, seeing another boy with black roots and white tips running towards the pair that you had forgotten were there.
“BOKUTO-SAN!” Hinata exclaimed as the boy tackled both Kenma and Hinata onto the ground.
“Bokuto-san, please refrain yourself from hurting other people,” a shorter black haired boy said quietly beside the eager looking Bokuto. “Hinata, please stop him whenever you feel like he’s going overboard. It’s okay to insult him to maintain civilisation.”
“And you could start by not tackling me to the ground,” Kenma scoffed quietly as he tried to scramble out of the embrace. Kuroo grabbed his friend’s arm to help him up as well.
“We should get in now. Training has already started and it took you guys too long to come,” Kuroo added.
“And you,” you finally pulled out of your daze from the fast-moving events that had happened to the orange tangerine still on the floor with Bokuto. “We need to get you to a washroom.”
“And Bokuto-san, please get up,” the black haired dude said.
“But Akaashiiiii! It’s Hinata!” Bokuto pouted.
“You will see him later, you have Tsukki for now,” Akaashi replied, pointing at Tsukishima who stared in disgust at the commotion on the ground.
“You’re right!” Bokuto’s smile widen as he pulled Hinata up from the ground. “Tsukki! Tsukki! Practice with me! Please block me!!”
“And… that is all for class today!” Your teacher concluded as the last bell was rung. As your class thanked her while shuffling through the room and packing up their things, you spot a bright orange from your peripheral vision.
You twisted your head to the door and found not two but four first years staring back at you. Hinata was smiling and waving as he walked towards your desk, Kageyama looked embarrassed as he constantly avoided eye contact with you. The other two first years were the most unexpected ones because they were here, at their own wills.
“Tsukki and Yams? Why are you guys here?” You asked as the four of them take seats around your table.
“I want to see how embarrassed and flustered the king would be to be writing an apology letter. Would he still try to restore his ego or not?” Tsukishima replied with a smirk as he crossed his arms.
“I just followed Tsukki along,” Yamaguchi replied timidly, looking away almost immediately until you remembered: despite being close to the volleyball team, the second years were the ones who had most of your attention and followed by the third years. You tried to mentally count in your head and realised that you barely interacted with them at all other than when you deal with volleyball matters.
“And I just realised,” you started. “I barely spend any time with any of you! This could be our first official manager-player interaction that doesn’t include volleyball!”
“Just the fact that if they can’t write this letter, they can’t play volleyball anymore,” Tsukishima commented, earning a grumble from Kageyama.
“Hey Tsukki! Be cooperative or otherwise, you can’t be here anymore,” you frowned. You turned around to face the troublemakers: Kageyama still had his head hung low.
“And you’re not like your usual self, Kageyama, what’s wrong?” You asked.
“He’s shy! He hasn’t interacted with you that much so that is why he’s like this!” Hinata intercepted earning a quick jab at the neck from the former.
“Oh no! No violence!” You quickly yapped, grabbing Kageyama’s wrist. “Okay let’s… let’s get back to our main issue for now: the apology letter. Do you guys have what you written?”
In union, they quickly dig through their bags and pulled out crumpled looking paper. Your eyes widen at the condition of the paper and realised that the paper was blackened from the constant erasing and writing over and over.
You picked up Hinata’s paper first and was baffled. This wasn’t an apology letter, this was a doodle!
“Hi…Hinata, why would you draw a smiling sun? And why is there only grass in one spot only?” You asked warily.
“That’s not the sun! That’s the vice-principal’s bald head! And that’s his wig!” Hinata grinned, pointing at the spot where you thought was grass. This earned another snort from Tsukishima.
“Stupid! Isn’t this an insult?” Kageyama commented.
You closed your eyes and took a deep breath. “W-what… what do you have then, Kageyama?” You asked as you picked up his equally crumpled paper. Your eyes scanned through the paper trying to find what he could have written that it nearly gave you a headache but you found it… a mere sorry at the corner of the paper, small enough to be missed by literally anyone. “And… and what is this, Kageyama?”
“An apology letter,” he replied quietly.
“How do you expect the vice-principal to accept this when he can’t even see that tiny looking ‘sorry’?”
“As expected from the ego of the king,” Tsukishima inputted earning another glare from the former.
“Okay… why don’t we start on a new piece of paper instead?” You asked, pulling two pieces of clean paper from your bag. “We can start off by addressing who this letter is for, shall we?”
“Do you regret doing what you did?” Daichi asked you for the nth time ever since you set off to run with them during their training. It wasn’t necessary for you to join them but you kind of thought you needed to stretch or move a little. You would always join them during a run and a couple of volleyball practices even though you weren’t that good. Today’s run, you were paired up with Daichi who set the pairing to your annoyance.
“For the nth time Sir Daichi, no I don’t,” you scoffed. You averted your gaze from the stern captain beside you to the front where you realized that Kageyama and Hinata were gone... again. They were competing against one another. You knew it would take them an additional 15 minutes to come back since you knew they were lost at this point.
“Come on Daichi, calm down,” you heard Sugawara jogging up to the two of you. Asahi looked a little pale next to Sugawara and you knew he felt uneasy around angry Daichi. “Y/N knows what she has done and look! She’s not a kid! She’s more independent than the rest of the volleyball team and she has helped out much more... well... well despite her antics with the gang.”
“You got to admit, I’m kind of the best manager,” I inputted, sticking my tongue out at the captain. “Who managed to make Ryu and Noya study?”
“Ennoshita.”
“Who was the one who set tests for them?”
“Kiyoko.”
“Who was the one who studied with them side by side?”
“Takeda-sensei.”
“Come on! I did something... I mean I contributed and helped out all of them!” I said in disbelief. “I can’t believe you pretended to back me up Suga-san!”
You diverted your attention the bickering and protests from the group when you felt your phone ping.
As Kiyoko typed out the list for you, you turned back to the trio who paused a little more in front of you as they did not notice you had stopped walking with them. You waved your phone at them and cup your hands to your lips. “Kiyoko’s errands!”
When you pulled yourself away from the screen, you realised you have already arrived at the convenient store that Daichi has been navigating around since you were distracted by your phone.
“I knew you were reliable, Daichi-san!” You gleamed, giving him a back slap as you walked into the store. He continued to stare at your shamelessness in disbelief. “What do we need to get again?” You asked as you felt him standing behind you again.
“You... you just gave directions to Asahi and Suga... how could you forget so easily?” He sighed. “Come, let’s get to the water bottle section.”
As Daichi guided you to the water bottle isle, you felt your phone vibrating so obviously you went to get it, however you failed to noticed two other people were standing in the same isle thus you accidentally bumped into them. Since they were bigger and taller than you, the impact of the bump made you fall backwards.
“Owh…” you gasped quietly.
“Are you okay?” You looked up to find a concerned face staring at you, with his hand stretched out.
Before you could do anything, you heard Daichi’s voice once again. “Y/N, I let your arm go for one second and you’re missing again-“
You saw Daichi freezing at the end of the isle, staring at the two other people who stood beside you. You raised your eyebrow at Daichi’s shocked face and took this time to look at the bright teal shirt of one of them: the one who was still offering their hand to you. The shirt read: Aoba Johsai.
“O-oh! You guys!” You said. You remembered how Karasuno had a practice match with you but it was before you joined the team thus this was why you never realised the tension between the other boy and Daichi.
“Oikawa, don’t start it again. We’re in the store,” the boy who offered you a hand warned the other boy before turning back to you. “Hey, you alright?”
“Y-yeah, I’m fine,” you responded, grabbing his hand. It felt like air when he pulled you up easily that it kind of flustered you. “Thanks…” you whispered.
“Sorry to be in your way,” the other boy replied, grabbing his friend, the brown-haired boy who you now know as ‘Oikawa’. “We’ll be leaving now.”
“Iwa-chan, I did nothing!” Oikawa exclaimed. “I’m still standing here not doing anything!”
“I know you are going to if I let go of your collar, you feral overgrown child,” his friend growled while still bowing at the two of you.
“What was that about?” You asked Daichi who was also still staring at the two of them until they disappeared from your view.
“Aoba Johsai: Oikawa, number 1, setter and captain and Iwaizumi, number 4, wing-spiker and ace,” Daichi replied. “Oikawa’s a really scary setter and spiker.”
“You know who’s scarier though?” You asked. Daichi glanced at you. “You because you’re still going to lecture me about what happened this morning.”
It has only been two weeks since you’ve joined the Karasuno team as their 2nd year manager. It was not supposed to happen like this but mishap happens and now, you were a part of them, closer than you have ever been with anyone you befriended.
It all started because of a minor injury… well, according to you it’s minor but it costed you your place in the dance club. I mean, you left because you didn’t want to bring down the team but it kind of hurts and since you were now officially club-less, it was Nishinoya and Tanaka who brought up the idea of you joining the boys’ volleyball team as a manager.
Long story short, you were reluctant because you weren’t exactly manager material but the two troublemakers were so assuring to you that you gave in to them and agreed. But what you and them didn’t know was that Kiyoko was also recruiting thus that was how the volleyball team has three manager.
If Kiyoko was the third-year serious and well-prepared manager and Hitoka was the shy yet talented graphic designer of the team, you were kind of…. another troublemaker of the team. It isn’t really a bad thing if you were the one who can actually tame the 1st and 2nd year boys from misbehaving but it was a gamble because you were like them, wild and aggressive as well.
Daichi and Sugawara were glad to have you on the team because of how easily the boys listened to you but unfortunately, it usually only lasted for 10 minutes and it went sometimes went something like this: when Nishinoya and Tanaka were practicing with you. Tsukishima and Kageyama were at the other side attempting to block you.
“Y/N! Do you think I can mimic Kageyama and Hinata’s quick attack?” Tanaka asked as you tossed them another ball.
“Ooo! I can be the setter!” Nishinoya chirped in.
“Do you really want to do it?” You frowned slightly. You were a little tired from tossing the ball into the air but the gleaming faces of your two friends turned your frown upside down in less than a second. “Bet!” You cheered as you tossed another ball in the air. Nishinoya immediately ran towards the ball and set it for Tanaka. Your eyes were glued onto the ball as you watched the ball quickly being set into the air and it was followed by Tanaka’s powerful spike. You knew it wasn’t as powerful as Hinata’s but you were still anticipative.
It took a quick second before the ball disappeared from sight and ended on the opposition’s court. The three of you screamed- not cheer, but screamed your lungs out.
“THAT’S RIGHT!” Nishinoya jumped up and down.
“THAT’S YOUR SPIKER RIGHT HERE!” Tanaka chimed in.
“DID YOU NOT SEE THAT NICE TOSS I DID?” You added. The three of you quickly grouped together and started spinning aggressively. “Are we not the dream team?”
“You are not and practice is over!” A voice interrupted your victory, putting your celebration into a hold. The three of you were greeted by Daichi’s quiet yet lethal’s smile. You froze. This wasn’t your first time seeing Daichi mad but you knew it was never good news.
“Y-yeah! Why did you guys have to make a ruckus?” You quickly turned to the boys, your back facing Daichi so he couldn’t see the reddened and flushed look on your face. The other two 2nd years were looking at you in disbelief.
“How could you turn your back on us like that?” Nishinoya gasped quietly under his breath. “I thought we were in this together.”
“We still are but we need to make this act believable for Daichi-san,” you whispered back.
“And it’s not going to work if you’re wondering, Y/N,” Daichi approached by your side, his face glowering with anger. “And you two… it’s time for your punishment.”
