theres like, a useful bit of advice for making art,stories, charactrs etc. that goes along the lines of like "You're not going to make good art if you're shut in & only consuming media & you do not have experience with people & the things they do, you're just going to regurgitate tropes" & it sounds quite particularly good & helpful if it wasnt for the fact that im a shutin who only consumes media & doesnt hang out with anyone so i wonder like. Well is there even then any point to me making art at all then if everything i make is therefore inherently just reheated leftovers because i dont have a Life. folks am i doomed

Negatives

still not invested in noelle/susie romance. i dont care enough about noelle, & susie gets Boring when theyre together *throws a glass bottle at the wall, it bounces back & hits me in the head*

i dont think asgore needed to explicitly say aloud he learnt a lesson from getting smothered by flowery. like i could trust to some degree he figured that out already & if it turned out he didnt then i can just throw another bottle & say "no more men" again

I hope that they never reveal "who killed Laura Palmer" in this game. Someone needs to do it since Twin Peaks couldn't, & this is a genuine opportunity to finally do that.

I think i kinda like FF14 more that I know it's cashing cheques it cant pay out, than I did when I was under the impression that they could.

Dawntrail has this one area that's a Theme Park. The zones of this theme park are artificial reproductions of foreign locations. You sequentially trundle around these zones in sequence, consuming whatever attractions are there - and after having used them up, you shut them down. All that's left behind are unpainted facades with no reason to ever return to them. This appears to me as reflexive writing, where they've distilled a Cynical view of the Final Fantasy 14 MMO Experience into this area's narrative. You get to participate in the game's own disposability and gimmickry in miniature & that's kinda cool right? You get to see it reduced to greybox walls before your mind ends up doing that automatically.

Anyways, you end up turning it all back on later, because FF14 is allergic to ugliness, so never fucking mind.

Except actually do fucking mind!!!!!!! because later after that, Halmarut shows up & tells you she interprets it that way too. She tells you that one day, Final Fantasy 14 is going to hit End Of Service & there's not much anyone can do about it unless you keep consuming all the content in the game until there's nothing left. Prior arc villain Calyx tried to save the world through Video Game Preservation, turning FF14 into an amazing digital mausoleum, all technically "saved" but inhabited only by ghosts. Calyx tells you there are worse fates for a live service game to meet, and all of them are being considered before releasing the player from the cycle of consumption.

How will they resolve all of this? This is a particularly desperate, precarious and contradictory narrative position to be in, and will have to be entirely justified by very clever writing and a solid plan of what to do when development ends. I think they'll attempt it with their standard mediocre aplomb & make something that sounds nice on a motivational poster. But there's still room between now and then to see the metaphor develop, which is the part that I like more than the desire not to be left hungry.
