Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.

Some extra notes:

Grace- aroace. Because thats important to me. Breakup was a long time coming, his stint in Denmark just sealed the deal. Starts working as a teacher very shortly after getting Rocky and a LOT of rumors spread around about the new teacher. He's the weird teacher for the longest time to the whole school.

Adrian- journalist, really liked Grace but did not think Grace liked them. Misses Grace quite a lot but moves on pretty quickly, unlike Grace who sorta cannot figure out what exactly he did wrong. (Adrian was his only long term relationship. He thought things were going good.)

Rocky- has the most embarrassing crush on Adrian who does not know he even exists for quite a while. They're not a very good match biologically, so Rocky cannot stay bonded to them. Will not stop insulting Grace for being inefficient. Rocky is the last survivor of his ship, very far away from home.

Grace and Rocky! Grace is freaked out when he first gets Rocky and is scared of him for the longest time. Eventually gets too attached to him as well and does NOT enjoy being separated from him. They become pretty codependent- especially with the real threat of Rocky dying if they get separated for too long with Rocky unable to find any other person who'd perfectly fit with him.

When Grace and Adrian meet up after Rocky bonds with Grace, Rocky gets real curious and really interested. He thinks Adrian is really funny and wants to know why the fuck Grace would leave them and why he hasn't tried to win them back. He also wants to talk to Adrian himself which Grace absolutely does NOT want to allow.

Adrian and Rocky end up getting along really well when Grace finally let's them meet. Rocky ends up being absolutely insufferable because he will not shut up about Adrian- and Grace ends up being exasperated at how nicely and politely Rocky treats Adrian when he calls him a leaky human, stupid, a loser, and inefficient all the time.

Adrian and Grace were a pretty good match, but ended up wanting different things in a relationship. Neither Grace nor Adrian are very tactile people. Grace is mostly uncomfortable with people touching him, and Adrian is mostly indifferent to touch, but doesn't seek it out. Grace was really happy he found someone who didn't require any cuddling or hand holding. His idea of a relationship was basically just friends who live together. Adrian really did not care about the touch, but they did expect a bit more kissing or going out on dates. It just wasn't enough for what they wanted out of a relationship. They ended up staying friends, but Adrian did want a bit of a break from Grace afterwards to get over him. Grace took the breakup pretty badly, but once things settled down, he realized he liked living alone much more.

Bloodymary Trolleyoperators nation let me hit you with this, I know we all love the swap au where Simon and Grace swap but what if a swapped au where:

Simon sends Ava down into the blood ocean, Grace has to send Stratt up into space. The circumstances for both can be played with / changed. Somehow both ships still end up meeting through wormholes or whatever other means we already have them meet in fanworks

One thing that's so underrated about PHM is Eva Stratt's appearance. She doesn't have the lipstick, sleek bun, pencil skirt (or even pantsuit), and heels look that is so often the uniform of female characters in similar roles. She doesn't wear makeup (as much as any other actor). She wears her hair down or in the simplest ten-second buns. She wears softs, easy to move in clothes that are weather appropriate. Why would she spend extra time making her physical body less efficient?
