i really hate how in the beach episode after everyone shared tales of their family life and how it impacts who they are and the way they act, azula's statement is pretty much ignored. yes, she did seem fine about her mom telling her that she was a monster because she was supposedly "correct" but that's just her coping mechanism. first, a parent should never say that to a child. obviously, all their experiences and their home lives were really toxic which saddens me. azula is so turbulent in her actions, it obviously had to stem from her inner feelings. sometimes when we are told something especially repeatedly from people we are close to, it becomes who we are. do I think that azula wanted to be seen as a monster? no. we see this when she talks to ty lee about all the boys being scared of her. she finally manages to make a connection with someone and is disappointed when she accidentally scares him away. so since she was told that she was a monster, she decided that's who she had to be.
edit: yes, I don't think her mother actually said that but that's just how azula interpreted her mother's actions towards her sorry for my wording :)
