"Deconstruction" does not (necessarily) mean "Adding a bunch of sex and violence and drug use and suicide to a work to make it grimdark"; it means, essentially, "foregrounding the implicit contradictions in a work by making them explicit in the text to showcase and critique their ideology in the wider culture."

So, for example "Watchmen" was deconstructive because superhero comics up to that point had, by and large, not really interrogated their own role with respect to things like the military-industrial complex or the rather sordid real-life history of vigilantism in the United States or the sexual psychology of an individual dressing up in (essentially) bondage gear and going out to beat people up on the street. The sex and the violence serve a thematic purpose. It doesn't become more deconstructive by adding *more* sex and violence to it; it depends on what was in (or left out of) the original work.

That's why the best superhero deconstruction in the last 20 years was Lego Batman.

Hey so as the economy continues to get worse in the next few years, gambling companies are going to go extra hardcore predatory as people become more desperate. Yes, even more than they already are. You have to promise me right now you're not going to fall for it. No gambling, okay?

This is going to be especially bad with prediction markets and sports gambling, and it's already really fucking bad. But it also goes for loot boxes, blind box collectables, trading card games, and ESPECIALLY gacha games.

Another thing that gets rly bad when the economy is bad is predatory lending, including payday lending and advance tax refunds, and there are also now apps doing predatory lending. And of course, credit cards.

These things are a trap to get people hooked.

The APR's are crazy high, way higher than you'd ever pay on a legitimate loan like a mortgage or car loan or student loan. Don't fall for it. Never take out a loan with a double digit interest rate, ever. If you have a credit card, only buy what you have money in the bank to pay for and pay it off in full every month.

i would be interested to see what kind of advice anyone has for those of us who don't have money in the bank to do that with. the people who don't have that kind of resource are the most vulnerable targets for predatory lending and it's not that we don't know it's a bad deal, it's that we don't have other options. Then what?

Sometimes it's truly unavoidable. I 100% get that. I got into some debt because of life circumstances where it was a choice between that and not eating or having a roof over my head. I was immensely lucky still - this was before shit like klarna was available / widespread, and I had £1000 interest free overdraft thanks to a student bank account, plus two awful interest rate credit cards totalling around £1500. It still took me like 5 years to get rid of all the debt.

The economy is worse now, the predatory interest loans, lending apps, cash advances, and payday loans are all much worse and more available than ever.

I am not blaming people who get trapped by this. The system is designed for it. It is not your fault. If you truly know it was unavoidable in your situation, I believe you.

But also - A lot of these things, especially the app based cash advances, and klarna etc, are counting on people's financial ignorance and desire for convenience. You have to educate yourself and avoid falling for it whenever possible.

Often you're genuinely better off not paying certain bills than going into predatory debt to cover them, for example. You might be able to talk to the company and agree on a long term payment plan - I did this for all my utilities when I absolutely had no money to pay them.

But all the advice in the world does not change the economic realities a lot of people live under. If you're in that position, you already know that. Often PSA style posts inevitably are more geared towards people who might be able to choose to avoid these services. My main hope is that next time the option is presented to you, you understand the initial ease and convenience is part of the trap, and you honestly evaluate whether you truly need it and have no other option.
