Let's talk about the relationship between Levi Ackerman and Hange Zoe
Everything mentioned below is canon.
As we can see, they are very close and know each other very well, even surpassing the phase of best friends.
And we can also see them always next to rach other, Whether during or outside of work, in good or bad times.
It is said by isayama that levi once tried to kill himself but was stopped by hange and erwin.
Also, when levi arrived at the Survey Corps with his friends, Hange was the first one to be kind and spontaneous with them, to the point of leaving Levi surprised by her upbeat and energetic attitude (choice with no regrets manga)
And let's not forget the fact that levi often knocks hange unconscious, so he can bathe and clean her (hange's interview), so he saw her many times naked since he is the one bathing her.
Now let's see levi's reactions whenever he sees hange around another guy (except Erwin and Moblit)
When she was trying to get information out of pastor Nick :
And when they captured Nicholas, she tried to negotiate with the Marley soldiers :
We can clearly see that levi is somehow jealous and angry at the way hange behaves with them, even going so far as to touch them in front of him.
Levi and Hange are very important to each other, they are always worried and scared when one of them is in danger :
Hange even protected him with her body, risked her life and escaped with him from Zeke, Floch and the yeagerist.
Levi is known to be a cold, serious and intimidant person, no one dares to respond or argue with him, But with hange, it's different, she gives him back his shit jokes with more shit jokes, she changes his plans for Eren without asking him, and he just lets her get away with it without saying anything, He knows it's her just by the way she knocks the door, they always drink tea together in their break, she's the only one that he allows to touch him, once, he grabbed her by her hair and bring her closer to him (her hair being known as canonically greasy, he does'nt care even if he is a freak clean), She knew that Levi lived with Kenny when he was a kid, that means he talks with her about personal things .....
They are the exact opposite but complete each other, that's what attracts them
Levi being a cold, distant person, having no energy obsessed by cleanliness
In the other side there is Hange the Energetic, friendly and curious one.
Even in their injuries, Hange loses her left eye, Levi losing his right one, Together united forming a pair of eyes and wings, wings of freedom, like a real Jian Bird
After saving him from Zeke and healing him, once he woke up, they opened their hearts to each other and expressed their frustrations, Hange even wished to live just with Levi, alone in the forest, but they couldn't let the rest of their comrades die, because he was humanity's strongest, and she was the commander, they carried heavy responsibilities on their shoulders.
However, that didn't stop them from giving each other warm, heartwarming looks.
‘Levi’s reaction was purely out of dedication to his job.’
***
Ppl who state this don’t understand Levi’s personality. I mean, he’s not an expressive guy and he can’t for the life of him sell nice honey-touched love verses nor sweet talk.
Hell, he didn’t know how to deal with Eren *back when he used to get imprisoned and all that, I recall that he ordered Petra to.. ‘do all the talk’ and soothe eren*; Let alone handle his own ROMANTIC life. Which’s a new big deal to him since he hasn’t been with a lover before.
They must be mindful of the fact that Levi never displayed any vulnerability in the series nor showed a meagre glance of longing to anyone.
When Erwin was about to die, Levi talked to him, kneeled before him and devoted his strength and has gotten enslaved to his power afterwards when he realised what Kenny’d meant.
The thing between Erwin and Levi was something between a soldier and his foremost commander AND it happened in the middle of a battle field. They weren’t alone, nothing was personal and all what were left there are sheer work and duty calls. Levi pushed Erwin to let go of his dreams, still feeling betrayed and didn’t get all soft with him despite the eminent respect he carried for Erwin’s judgments and visions. Erwin was a leader, his boss and his friend. And Levi looks up at Erwin as someone who’s higher than him, that he, himself can’t see what’s behind Erwin’s thoughts and motivations.
But in Hange’s case, they were by far, equal. Levi and Hange possesses what the other half lacked and they both knew each other quite a lot. Something that wasn’t pointed out about certain SHIPS.
And round Levi’s reaction, firstly,
they were in the middle of the forest, alone and in privacy were left, unlike Erwin’s scene and unlike many scenes. Levi displayed the feelings, he buried and hid from everyone.
Like let’s be honest, have you ever seen Levi stare so damn longingly and sadly at someone before with his gaze solely zoomed at? with his tone being so low, tired and hurt. Not to mention that they brought this scene when he exactly ASKED ‘ what will they get if they ran away?’ .
Why couldn’t he just say ‘No, we have a job to do.’ Simply. Why didn’t he suggest the answer roughly as he always do?
It’s because he’s reluctant. And because he’s unsure? Like it’s more of asking himself rather than Hange, it’s like he’s considering the option and weighing the outcomes by uttering it out loud.
‘ what will running away bring him? Bring them? Happiness or regret?’
Most of the fans said that Hange’s tone wasn’t serious but why did Levi CONSIDER it ? Can’t he laugh it off? Crack a shit joke ? If they really Still were friends, then they’d do that I’m sure.
Levi at chap 132 wanted to stop Hange’s ‘ inevitable’ death unlike Erwin’s also inevitable death but at 132 he was being selfish. He wanted Hange to live despite knowing that she must go just like Erwin, but he wasn’t even thinking straight.
And as manyyyy have said it, Levi devoted his power and strength for Erwin, his best friend and dearest commander.
I loved reading your take on chapter 126 and Levihan. It brought back so many emotions. Thank you so much for that ❤️
I'd love to read your take on chapter 132 as well. You really made me curious with this:
"What we are not shed any light on here, is how Levi would have answered her question. But I do believe we get an answer for that in 132, when he literally dedicates his heart to her."
Wow thanks so much Anon! I’m really glad my interpretation of it resonated with you 😊
Omg 132 - so I would love to give my take on it, although I’m not sure I’ll be able to highlight anything that hasn’t already been said by some of the amazing Levihan meta writers and blogs already out there. Specifically, let me shout out @nocturnalmk and her masterlist here because some of this content is what got me thinking about 126 in the first place. Her own stuff and links to others regarding 132 are definitely worth checking out! Particularly, the information about Hange’s ‘unrequited love for Titans,’ and how Levi phrases this, is essential.
Also - this all ended up reaching a little past 132 and into later chapters too - hope that’s okay!
So I’m not sure if, after thinking about it more thoroughly and doing a little more reading, the way I phrased it previously is really correct - the idea that Levi dedicates his heart to her. It’s actually kinda more painful, in my eyes.
Disclaimer - here on out is my interpretation of events - everyone will see things differently and so I am no way claiming this is the only or correct way to look at these scenes. Anyway, on with my rambling then -
Let me explain firstly about the scouts’ salute and what it means.
It’s both the action and the words which give ‘shinzō wo sasageyo’ it’s meaning. Translated literally, shinzō is the heart, and wo sasageyo is to dedicate. As to who’s - yours, mine, his, hers - this is inferred from the context of the words. It’s abstract, mainly - more concerned with the action than the owner of the action. At least this is as much as my rudimentary Japanese tells me.
Another thing to note is that ‘shinzō’ is the word used for the physical organ, whereas ‘Kokoro’ is the heart when we talk about it in an emotional or spiritual sense. In light of this, when soldiers salute, it’s not the fortitude of their minds and the spiritual soul that they’re dedicating to the military, it is their literal hearts.
Think about that for a moment.
They are pledging their hearts - the organ that is responsible for keeping them living and breathing - to the military’s cause. In essence, they are pledging to lay down their lives for the cause. If they have to die - if they have to literally hand over their beating heart to whatever fate awaits them - they will do so.
The thud of the curled fist over the heart cements the promise - almost like one is literally saying - yes, here it is, in my chest, and I am giving up ownership of it. It’s no longer mine. My life is no longer my own - it belongs to duty and to the military, even if in the end I have to give it up.
So then let’s take a look at how the final salute between Levi and Hange goes:
(The fact that he calls her four eyes again here will always end me.)
I find these and the following panels especially heartbreaking, not simply because of Levihan’s goodbye, but because of the complex weight this moment holds for both of them, in terms of the ownership they have over their own lives, and the choices they are and are not able to make. It ties into the whole theme of freedom that runs through the heart of the manga.
In Hange’s final moments, it’s never been more apparent how far from freedom both of these characters are. They are not free, because they pledged their beating hearts to a cause, and now one of them must pay up.
Hange realises this. Like in the forest, she’s already made her decision when Levi speaks to her, because she’s true to her duty and she knows that it’s time to give up what she’s always promised she would when the time comes. But she’s terrified, still. Of course she is. This is why she can’t look at Levi. This is why she’s sweating profusely. This is why she tells him to just let her go.
It’s not the titans or death that she’s terrified of, though. How many times have we seen Hange face off with death? How many times have we seen her charge headfirst into hordes of titans without fear or care? Too many times to count.
But now she’s scared. Because something has changed.
No, it’s not death she fears. It’s her own ability to keep her promise - to dedicate her heart and body and life to the Survey Corps if Levi stands before her, looks her square in the eye, and asks her not to.
Hange is scared that Levi is the one thing that will crumble her resolve.
Why?
Because Hange heard Levi’s answer to her private, selfish wish from the forest earlier in the chapter. When Levi, in his typical direct and yet not direct at all fashion, insinuated that while her love for Titans may go unrequited, there are other loves in her life which will not.
Like her love for him.
That is how I interpret that earlier moment - as I said before, the links above are essential reading - and when you look at the moment of their goodbye in light of that, it cuts so deeply.
This is the face of a man warring with his own resolve, just as Hange’s is so close to cracking before his very eyes.
Levi’s expression goes from defiant, to defeated, to devastated. Realisation sets in that they were never free at all, and as people with integrity, neither of them could ever abandon the duty that they’ve pledged their lives to.
Even for each other.
So instead of pleading with her not to go like he clearly wants to from that pained expression, and the fact that he followed her even though she couldn’t bear to face him, Levi instead gives his blessing.
He presses his fist to Hange’s chest because he knows that it really has come time for her to ‘devote her heart,’ to put her money where her mouth is and give up her life for the continuity of the Survey Corps.
The hardest hitting part of these panels is not the way he puts his fist to her chest - not the idea that this is some ‘secret romantic gesture’. Because it’s really not. It’s devastating. What we should really be focusing on is how hard it clearly is for Levi to bring himself to do that - look at how pained he is. What it takes for him to make himself repeat that promise that now chains Hange to her fate - to her imminent death - and leads her living, breathing body away from his.
He doesn’t bring his fist to his own chest because it is not his heart - his body, or his life - that is going to be given up. It’s hers. And he wants to fully acknowledge that. What duty is costing him. Why he really does need to fight on and make what she devoted worthwhile. Sound familiar?
He probably could feel her heartbeat against his hand - a reassurance that in that moment, she was still alive and well in front of him, very physically present. Her whole life still ahead of her, with possibilities and opportunities and choices and freedom. But she gave all that up. She volunteered it readily, and even though Levi could have stopped her, he never would have. Because that’s just not who they were.
As is fitting, the final member of the Survey Corps to sacrifice themselves, and the last salute by Levi, prove to be the things that best encapsulate the idea of ‘shinzō wo sasageyo,’ and the true weight of that promise.
She didn’t want to go. He didn’t want to let her. And although the other characters look neutral or with small smiles, Hange looks filled with longing and pain. Notice how Levi never once says any of it was worth the sacrifice.
Levi is the only one in the end freed from his duty - the sole beating heart left out of so many, as symbolised by his final salute. The single tear is telling of what it cost him to get there.
You cant tell me that the shishgumi gang were just waiting around when they did their dance, they gotta be somewhere where they can keep an eye out on their boss at all times.

okay I don’t know if someone pointed this out already, but you can hear Clarke talking to Madi in s5 in her mind, and she says “If I were with BELLAMY, I wouldn’t have met you”, but if you go to the actual episode in s5, she said “If I were with THEM, I wouldn’t have met you”.
So the writers decided to change that memory on purpose.
When he tells Clarke that forgiveness is hard for him and his sister he is stating a fact.
A fact that’s backed up by the text: He doesn’t forgive Jaha or Kane for the Ark or for his mother. His grudge against the grounders and Trikru caused all sorts of problems in Season 3. He hasn’t forgiven Octavia for everything that she’s done, particularly in the last 6 (131?) years (and is also starting holding her accountable for emotional manipulation she pulls on him which I am very excited about but that’s another meta entirely). In the very first romanitic interaction we see between him and Echo reveals that it took Bellamy three years to forgive her. And we know he never forgives himself for anything.
But he does forgive Clarke, over and over again.
Why is Clarke different to everyone else? Why is she the exception to the rule.
I believe that one of the reasons that Bellamy finds it easier to forgive Clarke is because of what happened in Day Trip.
She saw him at his most vulnerable, and in that moment said to him “If you need forgiveness, I’ll give that to you. You’re forgiven, okay?” It was given so freely over something that was tearing Bellamy up inside. It meant so much to him.
If this were a TellTale game “Bellamy will remember that” would have appeared above his head.
Forgiveness is hard for the Blakes, and Bellamy is not naturally forgiving, but I think when it come to Clarke he’s trying (subconsciously or conciously) to pay her back in kind.
He knows that she knows him. At his darkest, most desperate place, she still forgave him; still saw worth and goodness in him when all he could see was hateful to himself.
She’s also his co-leader, and is one of the few people in the show that has had to make the same level high-stakes, everybody loses no matter what you choose, decisions. He knows what it’s like to feel like everything you touch withers and dies, what it feels like when there are no right choices.
So he forgives her. Again and again, where normally he would hold things against people. It doesn’t mean he forgets what happens, or that he doesn’t have mixed feelings about some of her decisions, but he will forgive her for the choices she makes, because he’s one of the few people who know what it’s like to be Wanheda, to be a monster in your own eyes.
This post jumps off of @igotbellarkeforthat’s post https://igotbellarkeforthat.tumblr.com/post/183950012054/forgiveness-is-hard-for-us and the first half is basically just paraphrasing what they said.
I was going to make a funny post about how Bellamy says this and then forgives Clarke .02 seconds later, but then I really started thinking
