For context, she originally tried to hide that Captain Carol Freeman is her mom, and Admiral Alonzo Freeman is her dad. Many people assume she enrolled under her Momās maiden name to that end.
Show runner Mike McMahan named her character after his sister, Beckett Mariner McMahan.
In an interview, Mike Mahan said that he plans to explain why she doesnāt share a surname with her parents - but he hasnāt yet.
Right now there isnāt a cannon explanation.
Iāve been thinking if she was just trying to hide the family connection, it would have made more sense for show writers to drop in a line about her name when it was revealed that Captain Freeman is her mom, or when Admiral Freeman is her dad. Why wait?
