I started rereading harry potter to get an insight into my younger self (I was obsessed. Obsessed. I genuinely believed I was Harry) and the insights are clear enough .... severely abused boy (my parents repeated the Dursleys at some points word for word) finds out he's really a very special boy, the most loved boy, in fact....

(I remember having elaborate sexual fantasies as a child, of also being an extra character at hogwarts, one who was also an orphan but everyone adored and had sexual power over the boy characters. Understanding this has also helped me understand how I coped with the abuse at home )

What really stood out to me is how reactionary jkrs politics always were. Yes, all the stuff about how white it all is, cho Chang, etc. But ultimately the whole plot hinges around the concept of "love" that is to say filial love. The power of Harry's parents loving him, carried in his blood (!) Plus his ancestry (!) Imbibes him with the technicalities needed to fight pure evil. Jkrs concept of the nuclear blood family as the bulwark against evil isn't that far off from her politics now

Not to mention that you can read the books - the films, especially- as a sort of badly written response to 9/11

I changed my branding away from Indian to vaguely ethnic and now I only get Americans, who, for the most part , are very empty headed, polite and they tip well
