Yes m*a*s*h is gay. But it is also extremely nuanced in its presentation of masculinity and sexuality and that’s part of what makes it gay. That and whatever the fuck Hawkeye and BJ have goin on

‘bombed’ is one of my favorite episodes for many reasons, and one of those reasons is frank asking henry, “colonel! was the officer’s latrine really destroyed?!”

Klinger appreciation post: Klinger's pride in the way he dresses is what makes me so drawn to him, like Margret became a rounded character and so much more than just "hotlips" thanks to Loretta Swit and in much the same way Klinger became so much more than a cross dressing joke. He never even really feels like one because he's only ever defended in his clothing choice by the men this show wants us to look to- Hawkeye, Trapper, Beej, and Potter all defend and offer support to him many many times. The ones who chastise him are shut down immediately and seen scornfully such that it is always clear Klinger is not to be disrespected. Klinger never backs down, never flinches when he's put on the spot about it, he actually eats it up. We grow in love with this character through the lens of the show by first becoming accustomed and then fond of Klinger's deemed 'charade' and find him endearing in all aspects. Stubborn and passionate, we see it in his love for his clothes, the speciality dresses, the designer shoes and all the magazines/ catalogues he reads and orders from, how particular he is with his accessories and how he knows either the history of the piece or where and when it was made and with what kind of fabric. It is consistent throughout the show, even with other main cast character changes, that he is to be embraced and defended and loved and that's why as a non binary trans man, that show has done more smoothing to my soul than most any other media.

I like to think getting a section eight became less and less appealing for Klinger the closer Hawkeye came to one. At first he thinks Hawkeye's doing the same thing, trying to scam his way out of the army, and hey! Had some good ideas there! But it becomes clear that Hawkeye actually has periods of intense emotional distress to the point of pain and disfunction. Klinger knows the signs, he's tried to replicate the signs, but he never understood the fear involved until he sees it on Hawkeye's face.

And he sees all this, sees the difference between faking it and what losing your mind looks like and watches as Hawkeye is sedated, or calmed, or talked away from the edge, or sent for R&R and they never even talk about sending him home because his hands still work. His hands never shake. He can still do surgery.

And Klinger's the only one that isn't truly surprised when Hawkeye Pierce is sent back to them after time spent in a mental hospital.

It wasn't about being crazy at all. It was about being functional as a cog in the war machine and Klinger and Hawkeye were always the most functional pieces in the 4077th.

Crazy or sane they were trapped.
