🐾Current project: right now, I’m writing a story called Hinc Itur Ad Astra. It is set in 1854 London, and follows physically disabled scientist, Dr. Victor Emrys. He is desperate to be taken seriously as a scientist, and is currently attempting to discover the key to immortality. He believes if he achieves this, humanity will be forced to take him seriously and stop undermining him simply for being disabled. He hits a roadblock and ventures out into the woods. He comes upon mysterious, ancient ruins that seem to hold the answers for what he’s looking for. However, there is a cost…

thinking about that scene in s5 when Jonathan Sims yells “don’t touch me,” and pushes a woman away when she’s grabbing onto him begging for help. Hellen uses it as a way to make a dig at his fading humanity, but I actually feel like it was an incredibly human reaction.

He is covered in scars, marked by all the fears, is his body even recognizable to him anymore? Does he look in the mirror and find a stranger looking back? Or is it just a visual reminder of all the ways he was manipulated? All that pain, he’s come to expect it. Of course he doesn’t want to be touched without his consent. Of course it gives him a visceral reaction that has him recoiling, lashing out, because if it isn’t Martin, it probably comes with pain. He’s lost so much agency, had every part of himself manipulated and used against him, of course he wants to reclaim what little he still can.

I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.

I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.
