Re: the last post, the article mentions that some places use clams to test the toxicity of the water. It’s like that in Warsaw- we get our water from the river, and the main water pump has 8 clams that have triggers attached to their shells. If the water gets too toxic, they close, and the triggers shut off the city water supply automatically.  

The clams are just better at measuring the water quality than any man-made sensors.

And if you'd like to know, one of the largest black trans women on twitter was harassed off of the site. No she did not do anything in particular, just posted an image of a sign she didn't make herself that claimed white trans people oppress black trans people (referring to I believe the silencing of a black trans woman who was slated to speak at the protest but was kicked off last minute. @/septembersister, If that's accurate.)

You have to understand intersectionality, you have to listen to the black and brown trans people in your communities, you have to give them space to speak or you create places where it is less socially risky to have profited off of racism than it is to be black.

I find that asking kids questions is really useful in understanding behavior. sometimes as simple as: "why did you say/do that?"

what a lot of people should know is being a woman in this situation makes it 100x harder to manage simply because the kid who is misogynistic will not take you seriously by default. I have a female co teacher who is just as strict as the men here but still gets way more disrespect. that's very demoralizing

parents often significantly underestimate how much their kids actually pick up on. I can kind of tell when a kid says something that's overheard from a parent- sometimes they sort of change their regular tone or behavior in the moment

parents are allowed to straight-up torture their kids with zero consequences. they can withhold food and water, lock you out of shelter, confiscate your belongings, bar you from human contact, attack and harm you and exert complete control over your physical appearance. and this is just the norm. if you speak out against it you're seen as a delinquent or a predator. even otherwise progressive people get uncomfortable with the idea of dismantling the nuclear family unit because they still see it as the best way to keep kids safe when that simply couldn't be further from the truth. it's evil.

why do we as trans ppl passively accept the pathologisation of gender dysphoria as a mental disorder? is this not dissimilar to how homosexuality was classified as a mental disorder just a few decades ago - something which we now understand as a calculated move by psychiatry to justify the narrative that homosexuality is ‘unnatural’ and a harm to society. not to mention how the classification of gender dysphoria as a medical pathology has been exploited to create barriers to transition and ultimately suppress trans ppl in society. why can’t gender dysphoria simply be a facet of the human experience rather than being prescribed a label which frames transness as a deviation from the ‘norm’ which requires curing. even if mainstream psychiatry states that treatment for dysphoria is gender affirming care rather than the suppression of transgender identity, this does not erase the core framing of dysphoria as a mental illness, the exact diagnosis which bigots classify trans ppl with. if transphobes believe we are mentally ill - why do we agree with them?

for those curious, this is joanne, a 15-year-old sumatran tiger currently living at phoenix zoo. it's very sweet to see her playing and tumbling around like this at her age -- she's got some people taking care of her if she still has this energy at that age.

i did see some users in the notes who were concerned about her looking 'scrawny', or wondering if she's maybe a juvenile -- far from it! at 15, joanne is very much considered a geriatric tiger; she's a grandma. she is, however, a sumatran tiger (panthera tigris sumatrae) -- sumatrans are the smallest extant subspecies of tiger, built more for the sweltering jungles of sumatra than the blistering cold of the amur river or the dense forests and mangrove swamps of south asia.

when you're used to seeing amur or amur-bengal hybrid ('generic') tigers on television or online, most of which are often overfed and overweight, a sumatran is going to look a bit weird, but joanne looks to be in wonderful shape -- look at those muscles flex and that coat shimmer when she moves! that's a healthy old lady for sure. props to joanne's keepers for taking such good care of her.

there’s a conversation here about how queer people who come from heavily poor, illiterate, traditional ass backgrounds have to put in fucking work to gain any real acceptance from the queer community so we’re not seen as ignorant and backwards but we also like don’t have community with our own families because of our gender and/or sexuality most times. it’s really rich that the progressive movement can acknowledge how poverty, illiteracy, religion, racial identity shape people but fully fail to understand it beyond good vs bad, enlightened vs ignorant, with us vs against us… like some of you fully cannot conceptualize a person that’s with you and on your side if they’re not exactly like you or deeply apologetic about where they came from because you look down on it. but i don’t really want to have that conversation with y’all.
