Based on the tags and posts I see most twn fans make, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that most of them haven't read the books (and therefore sometimes mischaracterize certain characters)? I totally understand if they haven't because they don't want spoiler for the netflix series, but they are missing out on some really good content :( along with random fun stuff, like the fact that Dandelion/Jaskier hogs the blanket (Sword of Destiny)

you would be correct, most people have not read the books! and tbh i get it; there’s a lot of very questionable stuff in the books as well, not to mention some pretty stiff content warnings, and there also are eight of them and a bunch of the main novels are quite dense at points, but there are also indeed a lot of really delightful things in them and they make me happy

But also, like. If you're only pulling from ONE branch of canon, then something that fits perfectly fine for that branch but doesn't fit for another branch is still valid.

It's not so much that people are mischaracterizing characters, they're just only accounting for the netflix characterization.

Like, hell, I've been playing tw3 recently, and you could NOT call game!Geralt and netflix!Geralt the same character as far as characterization goes.

And based on how Andrzej has spoken about things in the past, that's intentional.

So, anon, just keep in mind that "only taking the netflix characterization and plot into account" =/= "mischaracterization"

TWN is not a direct translation of the books, it's an adaptation -- they changed both characterization and the actual plots.  So even if someone wanted to, they couldn't fully reconcile them together.

Dandelion isn't at the banquet in Cintra.  Netflix!Geralt doesn't meet Ciri in Brokilon.  Book!Geralt doesn't yell at Dandelion on the mountain.  And so on.  Fic writers are going to have to make choices what to pull from.

And I agree, if the writer is setting something fully within the Netflix version of the Continent, then using the Netflix characterizations is... in character.  (But mixing them up is also totally fine!  Fandom is for fun!)

If anon is talking about book characters who haven't appeared in the show (yet), eh, butterfly effect, as far as I'm concerned.  The world has already been changed, so why wouldn't other characters be a little (or a lot) different?

I do fully appreciate that if someone was a book fan first, they might not like the changes that were made, and they have every right not to.  But when book-first or book-only fans come in and tell Netflix-first or Netflix-only fans that they're doing it wrong -- that, basically, they're having the wrong fun -- eh, that feels a little gatekeep-y.  

Let's not do that, a'ight?  "It's not cool to throw things at people who are different" is kind of one of the themes of the series, right?
