A few days before the game was released in Japan, the official “Lightning Returns” accounts on Twitter and Facebook uploaded short comments from the voice-actors.

Kaji Yuuki, the voice of Hope Estheim, left an especially intriguing message:

I’d love to outright agree with this but I can’t. Or at least not completely.

The thing with voice actors (especially gaming VA’s) is that they don’t always know everything outside of what happens with their own character. For instance, go back and listen to Jason Marsden’s (Noels VA) final fantasy XIII-2 FFUnion interview. He barely knew anything about the other characters and he said that the ending of that game was happy.

My point here is that just because a voice actor says it, doesn’t make it fact. Especially in a statement that is somewhat ambiguous like this one.

Once again I really WANT to agree with this theory however I can’t with just this.

Side-note, all of that above is based on what I know of american voice acting from a localized version of a game. Japanese voice actors might be more involved with the direction of the character and may know more of the world/plot. I’m not sure, I can only ho off what I know!

I’m sorry, but Japanese voice-actors are INCREDIBLY involved and informed. For example, they may go back and watch the whole series of an anime for just one episode that they will be featured in. They want to make sure they understand everything.

The voice-actors will read the source material (manga, novels, ext) for a series they will be involved in. Ebara Masashi (Sazh) is an older gentleman who used to be unfamiliar with “Final Fantasy” or any other RPG games. However, when he was chosen to voice for Sazh, he purchased and played FF12 to become immersed in the series. Kaji Yuuki likes to photocopy manga pages, cut out the scenes, and study facial expressions before he actually voices the scenes at the studio. The voice-actors are incredibly dedicated and are expected to be as such. And the developers and fans are especially strict with them. If they didn’t do their “homework” with a series, there would be a huge backlash. Voice-acting “veterans” (those with seniority and experience) are also very strict with their younger subordinates. Fukuyama Jun, a seiyuu, once revealed that he was cursed and yelled when he was still a rookie because he didn’t make an effort to understand the story or his character and made too many mistakes while he performed. The voice-actor world in Japan is a very fun, but serious place. I don’t mean to say that the American VAs are not dedicated or serious. The VA “culture” in Japan is just so different from America. Jason Marsden could have at least played the previous game or watched the cutscenes, but he didn’t. He got away with it in American, but that would be considered unacceptable in Japan.

And maybe you didn’t read my translation of the “Ultimania Omega” interview with Sakamoto Maaya (Lightning) and Kotobuki Minako (Serah). They revealed that the creators were constantly giving them guidance and information about every line. There is NO way anything was misunderstood. Kaji Yuuki and his fellow voice-actors know exactly what they are talking about.

Kaji Yuuki simultaneously recites this poem in a feminine voice and a more masculine voice. It’s pretty interesting to hear the contrast. Also, I don’t know why, but this poem is giving me major OTP feels. XD
