Sorry, but I'd choose the "bully who grew up and realized what they did was wrong" than the "bullied who grew up and became a mf bully teacher" any day
You can hate the marauders ofc, even I got the ick in that part of thp, BUT no one will ever convince me they (expecially James) are the ones to blame for how Snape turned out.
Alsooo, bullying does not turn you into a n@zi :)
Sorry, but Iâll always choose the working-class kid with no resources who was groomed and recruited into a terrorist group because, from his perspective, it was the only way out, especially when the âgood guysâ were either his bullies or the people who enabled them. Then he regretted it, spent 18 years making up for his mistakes, and worked his ass off to save everyone else before himself, over the aristocratic abusers who mistreated people because they had the economic and social capital to do it, as well as the privilege to be seen as âgood,â yet never once regretted being classist pieces of shit.
Iâm also not someone who throws around Nazi comparisons lightly. Call me crazy, but Iâm really not into comparing a fictional group of nationalist terrorists to the Nazis who put my grandfather in a concentration camp. Fucking clown.
i've always seen history and politics as my weakest sides, but the marauders fandom folks make me feel like Sir lan Kershaw :|
[ it is not a good thing. not a good thing at all. ]
This is exactly what has always baffled me about the specific type of marauders fan that sees it as, like, a competition between James/Sirius and Snape as to who is âthe good guyâ and who is âthe bad guy.â They fundamentally seem to really believe that it comes down to âchoosingâ one or the other of them.
Iâve seen Snape fans do it, too, but theyâre a lot more likely to appreciate the character for what he is: someone with good qualities and bad qualities, neither of which diminishes the other. I can give marauders fans the benefit of the doubt by saying that I donât usually interact with them except when they overlap the Snape fandom, which is usually to fight, and so maybe there are marauders fans who specifically like them because they recognize that they are flawed people, but I have never seen it.
What James is has nothing to do with what Snape is. James was a bully. There is no downplaying that. He was also a loyal friend and ostensibly on the ârightâ side of the war. Marauders fans love to claim that James changed and Snape didnât, but thatâs a complete fabrication on both accounts. We donât KNOW if James changed, because he DIED. The ONLY evidence that indicates he changed was that Lily stopped hating him, and his friends say that he did. Neither of these is particularly strong. Lily could have simply stopped caring if he bullied Snape because she was angry at him, or he could have continued to do it behind her back, as is implied. His friends say that because A. his bad behavior is also an indictment of themselves, and B. they donât want to speak ill of the dead to their friendâs orphaned teenage son. Since very few people stay the same at 30 as they were at 15, itâs reasonable to assume he would have changed in some ways. But no one will ever know because he died before that.
The claim that Snape didnât change is so completely against his entire arc that you have to be functionally retarded to make this claim and so I wonât even bother to argue it, the people who say this either never read the books, only care about fanfic, or are being intentionally obtuse so they can lamely excuse their faveâs behavior towards him. None of those people are worth engaging. Source that he changed: literally his entire story. He gave his life to try and make up for what he did by telling Voldemort the prophecy.
Whether James changed, or would have changed, has exactly zero bearing on whether Snape changed. They are separate characters whose lives completely diverged after school. Arguing that Snape is evil because James is good, or vice versa, is moronic as fuck.
James has good qualities and bad qualities. Snape has good qualities and bad qualities. Most Snape fans arenât out here defending Snape bullying children, whereas most James fans Iâve come across spend quite a lot of time trying to defend him bullying Snape. Which is insane! If you have to find excuses that arenât textually justified to back up why you like a minor background character, which James is, then I donât think you even like that character at all. I think you like the hot rich bisexual jock you see in fanfic. Youâre allowed to like a character without that character being morally perfect. There! Youâre free! You can like the rich jock bully background character guilt-free! You donât have to âchooseâ between them! You donât have to go around defending it by putting down other characters and making yourself look stupid!
Truer words were hardly spoken.
I'm sorry you had to deal with the insufferable killjoys imposing their own political opinions on AI on you and shaming you. Kudos on your for standing up for yourself instead of bending the knee as so many people do. I am so proud of you.
These people are so damn annoying, constantly virtue signaling and policing how other engage with fandom. Worst part is, these opinions aren't even positions they organically arrived to through their own thinking. They just heard the dominant opinions wherever they hang out and started repeating them like soulless robots (ironically lmao). And these aren't even objective truths but political positions on AI they expect everyone else to follow. They're so dictatorial, eugh! Not everyone shares their POLITICAL opinions and nobody has to. The ideological policing on this site is insufferable.
Anyway, have fun. Engage with fandom however you want to. Use AI if you want. You have free will and they can never take that from you. Let them seethe.
Much love â€ïž what an odd world we live in, that such simple truths, like "live and let live", have ceased to be the mainstream opinion and basic moral standard and have become contested. People feel the need to resort to anonymity when protesting ideological railroading. What a mad world.
While reading a Severus Snape fanfic, I asked ChatGPT to provide me with an image of him according to his description in the fanfic.

@severus-snaps
Thanks for the tags,
Alan Rickman was one of a kind and a possible version of a Snape at the age of 40-50+, which of course made him "yummy" to look at, especially for girls with certain kinks đđ€. Provided his Snape had been well-nourished in the past and had a good life until he met Harry.
The rather gaunt and unkempt version my request of the AI produced is of course much more aligned with Harry Potter's description in the actual books and even much scarier than the fanfic in question described him. In my imagination he wouldn't have looked like this, despite of what I read. I believe this is why the AI cannot be as accurate as a human's imagination or the variety of human faces in nature. There are always fine details it cannot reproduce no matter how precise the description is that you gave it. Words cannot encompass the full capacity of our imagination of people, made of so many individual factors contributing to it, neither can they fully describe a living human.

ok but that means you put an author's words into a genAI software without their consent. please don't do that. you're uploading someone's work into a program that is, essentially, stealing it and chat GPT will retain that and use it for other prompts. fic authors have repeatedly expressed concern and outrage that AI bots scrape their work without their consent, stealing it, so if you could please not help contribute to that. especially for fics that are protected, like the ones on ao3 you can only read if you're logged in.
Hi, first of all, I don't appreciate your passive aggressiveness and deliberate negative interpretation of what you believe to be the truth, as well as the not so subtle attempt of shaming in the tags. I certainly did not "post an author's words into a genAI software", since there is no need for that because I wasn't so lazy as to copy and paste, but listed the adjectives found throughout the story describing Snape (which are certainly not protected, such as "black eyes" or "lank hair", are they now), while asking to experiment with the age of the resulting image. Which was not meant to "illustrate" the fic or present it as a form of art, but to check out of curiosity how this fictional character might look like outside of imagination, and not as a drawing. Which is a legitimate form of interaction with fiction and fictional characters. And of course I have shared image AI results before, since once this technology became available, it made it possible for us, who appreciate fictional characters, not only see them on screen as imagined by film directors using actors, but also closer to their original description or personal imagination/imagination of others.
And at last a request if I may, please don't walk around assuming the worst of people only because they've shared a personal thought or experiment on their own page you happen to dislike, even though it says absolutely nothing about how they came to expressing it. You could have just asked.

If Snape was rich and hot, half of the Marauders fandom would be calling him "yearning," "down bad," "a tragic romantic," and insisting he "never stopped loving her."
But because he's poor, awkward, traumatized and not conventionally attractive, suddenly it's "incel," "creepy," and "obsessive."
Funny how fandom morality changes the moment you swap class status and attractiveness.
This is so odd actually, that this is the attitude Snape is receiving. Because all through the centuries of fictional literature, (anti) heroes like Snape had always received positive attention and were subject to fascination and even admiration - even if you look at Dracula and Quasimodo, for instance. Is this negative and insulting attitude and what we call "cancelling" nowadays something that has emerged in the last decade? I recall that after the last HP book's release and at the very last after the final release of the movies, Snape was the one character leading in the favourite character polls.
I really wonder if this is a recent change for the worse or not.
Saw an idea on twitter and needed it with Snape
Oh God
Oh no
Both of these can be true.
Misplaced empathy leads to opening your borders to rapine beasts that ruin the future of your children.
It signals the death of empathy for your own people, your very own children.
There is a thing called toxic empathy. Take care of your own house before you handle another.
Are we still peddling this quote taken wildly out of context?
While Musk said he believes in empathy and that âyou should care about other people,â he also thinks itâs destroying society. âThe fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy, the empathy exploit,â Musk said. âThere itâs theyâre exploiting a bug in Western civilization, which is the empathy response.â Empathy, he said, has been âweaponized.â
He's not saying empathy itself is wrong, he's saying people can abuse it. He also said it's complicated.
Ironically, OP misquote is often deployed to demonize Musk himself and decrease empathy for him.
OP proving him right.
The issue is the MISPLACEMENT of empathy.
We are supposed to feel bad for those supposedly oppressed by the virtue of their <fill in blank>.
At the same time when the same people hurt our own we're supposed to look away due to some imagined privilege.
In short we're supposed to feel bad for criminals rather than victims because the victim was supposedly better off than the oppressed criminal.
This has to end.
Reblogs are well-worded.
It's funny how I never paid any special attention to the meanings behind the names of people and places in "Harry Potter", no matter in which language I read the books. As a teenager when reading the first 4 books in German, or the 5th in Russian, or the 6th in German/English, and the 7th in English as well, a few years ago....Names were names for me, I accepted them as part of the reapective character or location. Only later (when my English became more detail-oriented) did I realise some connections and "easter eggs" in the name choices. But it didn't amuse me that much; in fact, when I found out "Hogwarts" meant "the warts of a swine", I was properly disappointed ( đŹđŹ). "Why swine? That's unserious", I thought.
The surnames and nicknames, despite how symbolic some of them sounded (Wormtail, Malfoy, Black) I just took for granted - "that's what their names are, period.
Today thanks to platforms such as this, so many people have posted meta and explanations of their origins and theories. It"s very interesting.

Do you have any random headcanons about Severus? Something less based on canon and more on your personal interpretation of the character?
No canon-related? Just vibes-based? Yeah, I've got quite a few:
He has chronic, undiagnosed depression, which basically explains why he doesn't give a flying fuck about anything that doesn't require an actual compelling reason for him to be invested. It also explains why he still lives in his childhood home even though the neighbourhood is awful and the house itself is full of horrible memories. It explains why he's got such a shitty personality, too. I've also always found him vaguely suicidal in general, not in the sense that he's actively trying to die, but more like he doesn't particularly care whether he lives or not. He's just there, purely out of a sense of atoning for his sins.
He absolutely despises Quidditch. Like, genuinely cannot stand it because he finds it mind-numbingly boring. That said, he likes it when Slytherin wins purely out of house pride.
Tobias used to force him to watch football matches as a kid, so he understands the rules, knows how the game works, and all that. But it's the same as with Quidditch: he finds watching sports unbearably dull.
He started smoking at around thirteen because, in the area he grew up in, it was pretty common for kids to pick up the habit ridiculously young. He regularly stole cigarettes from his father.
He always had to fend for himself when it came to cooking because Eileen either didn't cook much due to being deeply depressed, or because she simply wasn't very good at it. So he learned how to cook at a fairly young age. The ironic part is that despite knowing exactly what he's supposed to do, he's absolutely terrible at it. He's a genius when it comes to following potion recipes, but making edible food is somehow beyond him.
He doesn't particularly enjoy eating in general. He does it because otherwise he'd die, basically.
If you asked him to choose an alcoholic drink, he'd tell you it's wine. But the one he can actually drink most easily is beer, even though he tends to avoid it because it reminds him too much of his father.
He's exactly the sort of man who would tell you he doesn't need therapy and that the last thing he needs is to discuss his problems with a stranger, because back in his day people sorted their own shit out and didn't need any of this modern nonsense. Above all else, Severus is a Boomer trapped in another generation, and he thinks like one.
Spoiler: he needs more therapy than your dad.
He has a great deal of insecurity when it comes to relationships and interpersonal connections, along with very low self-esteem regarding both those relationships and his physical appearance. Intellectually, however, he knows he's a ten out of ten. He doesn't doubt for a second that he possesses exceptional intelligence and talent. If there's one thing he has in abundance, it's intellectual arrogance, contradictory as that may seem. But that's because he's built what little self-confidence he has around that aspect of himself.
This is a headcanon I bring up all the time because I love it far too much: when he joined the Death Eaters, Narcissa was basically trying to find him a girlfriend every five minutes. She kept attempting to set him up on blind dates in a very older-sister sort of way, but Severus was an absolute disaster and often didn't even show up. He only agreed to go to one or two out of deference to Lucius, but they were among the worst experiences of his life. He had never felt such intense second-hand embarrassment.
He has absolutely no idea what to do with a baby. He's one of those people who becomes incredibly tense the moment you hand one to him because the only thing he can think of is people making silly faces and using ridiculous baby voices, and he would Avada Kedavra himself before willingly engaging in that sort of behaviour. He and babies are the worst combination imaginable.
He never puts sugar in anything. Not in tea, not in coffee. He prefers bitter flavours.
His sense of humour is atrocious. Not dark, beyond dark. Pitch-black. Full of deeply uncomfortable references. In fact, he doesn't openly express even half of the things that occur to him. He knows very few people around him would actually appreciate that kind of humour, not even among the Death Eaters. But every now and then he'll come up with some truly horrific remark in his head and find himself absolutely hilarious. He'll quietly laugh to himself because, deep down, he thinks he's incredibly funny. And yes, those thoughts are usually related to the person standing in front of him and how spectacularly unintelligent he considers them to be.
He prefers cold climates to warm ones, and the very concept of going to the beach is one of his worst nightmares. It could probably become a boggart, honestly.
Going to London gets on his nerves. The hustle and bustle of a big city irritates him to no end.
He's surprisingly charismatic when drunk. The problem is that it's surprisingly difficult to get him drunk in the first place, even if he drinks a considerable amount, because he tolerates alcohol like a bloody Viking.
He's unbelievably stingy, to the point where it genuinely warrants professional evaluation. He won't buy new clothes unless the old ones are literally falling apart. It stems from having had nothing as a child. Even if he had become incredibly wealthy, he wouldn't spend a penny unless it was absolutely necessary. Any self-indulgent purchase takes him days of deliberation because once he actually buys it, he feels genuinely guilty about it.
In keeping with that, he's the type of person who insists on splitting a bill down to the very last penny.
He's an incredibly proud man. He'll never admit that he needs help or that he's struggling because he insists on handling everything himself. The idea of depending on other people makes him deeply uncomfortable.
Growing up in Spinner's End taught him that the best defence is attack. When he got into fights in the neighbourhood, Tobias forced him to physically fight back against whoever had gone after him. By the time he arrived at Hogwarts, creating spells simply seemed like the logical equivalent because that's how people attacked each other there. The law of the street still applied.
He would rather drive an enchanted car like Arthur Weasley's than get on a bloody broomstick.
He isn't a virgin.
Absolutely, most of it!
Best headcanon of yours in my eyes were his sense of humour (him finding himself incredibly funny) and him being charismatic when drunk. Would've loved to see that.
The longer you're in the Snape fandom, the less he resembles Alan Rickman in your head.
Severus Snape: Widower of the Living
Let us be clear, sweetie: Severus Snape is not some angry little man on a forum crying because no witch would date him. No, no. Severus Snape is a man who once held love in his hand, fumbled itâdropped itâand then decided he should never touch anything that delicate, again.
He didnât become celibate out of bitterness. He became celibate out of penance. The man took his heartbreak and turned it into a lifelong funeral march with no coffin, no flowers, just black robes and regret.
You think he couldnât find someone else? Please. Heâs tall, mysterious, clearly got cheekbones sculpted by rage and repression. He could absolutely ruin the right personâin the best way. But does he flirt? Does he date? No, darling. He broods. With purpose.
Because Severus Snape isnât single. Heâs emotionally widowed. Lily Evans didnât just dieâshe became the ghost he takes to bed every night. And he? He became her silent mourner, carried grief like someone who never got the chance to be anything to her. Never kissed her. Never claimed her. But oh, he remembers her like a vow.
This man wears grief like couture.
No one else gets close. Not because theyâre unworthyâbut because he refuses to let himself be chosen again. Itâs giving martyrdom. Itâs giving âI could destroy you with how much I feel but I wonât.â Itâs giving âtouch me and I might unravel in front of the tapestry.â
He doesnât need pity. He needs a mirror that tells him, âShe never loved you. But you loved her. And you helped seal her fate. It wasnât rejection that broke youâit was living with the belief that you had no right to be loved after what it cost.â
But until that day? Snape remains the widow of the living. Alone. Unkissed. Unhealed. And absolutely unforgettable.
