Virgil sighed, his chin in his palm and his elbow on the table as he stared at Logan, who was debating with Roman on the other side of the room.
"This is hopeless," he said.
"Aww, nothing's ever hopeless, kiddo," Patton said, patting Virgil on the shoulder.
"This is," Virgil argued, tearing his eyes away from Logan to turn and look at Patton.
(As he did this, Patton noticed Logan spare a short, almost longing glance in Virgil's direction. Then, he turned back to Roman.)
"There's no way it would ever work out between us. And there's no way it would even ever happen. He doesn't like me back, so it's hopeless." Virgil spoke quietly, only loud enough that Patton could hear him.
"But how are you so sure?" Patton said.
(He had had that very same conversation with Logan as many times as he'd had it with Virgil, but he would not betray either of his kiddos by telling them that.)
Virgil struggled to answer that for a few moments.
"I just- I just know," he said, looking fondly at Logan again. "Why would someone like him ever like someone like me?"
"Kiddo," Patton said in a serious voice, covering Virgil's other hand with his own and catching his attention again. "Don't you talk bad about yourself, or I'm gonna have to physically fight you."
"You know, you've said that before, but I've yet to get into a physical fight with you. So far all you do is hug me."
"And I'll keep doing that until you start talking nicely to yourself!" Patton said. "Now, come on, kiddo. Logan would be a lucky man to have you, just as you'd be lucky to have him! You're both wonderful, you deserve each other."
Virgil did not look like he believed Patton's words, but his expression did seem appreciative.
Patton gave Virgil a smile, and Virgil gave him a small smile back.
Then, they both turned back to watch Logan and Roman debate, though Virgil's eyes remained firmly on the former.
Patton nudged Virgil with his elbow.
"So," he said. "When are you planning on confessing?"
Virgil tensed up. "Uh... never? I'm not looking to be rejected, or to make things awkward between us. That sounds like a literal nightmare." He paused. "I might've actually had that nightmare."
"Oh, Virgil," Patton said. "I'm sure it would go much better than you imagine, if you'd just give it a try."
