Turns out it's not even the ridiculous prices, the interest rates, or the barrier for entry that is needing tens of thousands for a down payment and closing costs. It's also that someone will always have more money to bid than you, and even if you muscle up and decide to go for a fixer upper that's ~75k less than you intended to spend, some landlord or home flipper can walk up with a cash offer and snatch even the shitty houses away from you

I need to impress upon anyone reading this that it isn't just not getting a house. It's that making an offer on a house is generally a no-takesbacksies ordeal, which means every time you even attempt to buy one you have to put yourself in the headspace of committing to a major life upheaval and all the work that's going to go with it. You need to be mentally prepared to take on hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt as well as any additional costs for maintenance and fixes. You've gotta be ready for all that just to ask nicely for them to consider letting you buy the house, then if you don't get it you have to snap back to normal and start the whole process over again.

I'm going to be honest chat the psychological toll this process has been taking on me is something no one prepared me for. It is a miserable affair.
