WARREN 2020
Betsy DeVos has no idea what the difference between proficiency and growth is
Department of Education secretary nominee Betsy DeVos’s Senate confirmation hearing was Tuesday.
Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) described an experience contrasting proficiency to growth and used that to ask DeVos for her views on the debate.
DeVos couldn’t answer the question. Read more
Betsy DeVos cites danger of “grizzlies” as reason to allow guns in schools
Also during her confirmation hearing, DeVos cited grizzly bears as why the federal government not to take action against guns in schools.
DeVos said in Wyoming, “I’d imagine there’s a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies.”
DeVos was referring to an anecdote Wyoming Sen. Mike Enzi told her in a private meeting earlier in the day about schools with wildlife fences.
One Wyoming teacher explained to Mic that guns are not necessary, fences and bear spray are used to ward off bears. Read more
Teachers union chief says Betsy DeVos “is a trainwreck waiting to happen”
Lily Eskelsen Garcia, president of the National Education Association, said in an interview that DeVos is unqualified and has the wrong vision for the nation’s schools.
“I don’t think you will find one human being who could actually point to something who could say, ‘Because she did this, it really improved those traditional, neighborhood public schools,” Garcia said. “What you’re seeing here is a trainwreck waiting to happen.” Read more

I’m so happy more opportunities are coming up! Scholarships are in effect a gift of free cash. Free cash is very popular in every society and nation. So the applicant and recipient of scholarship money has worked very hard and has much to offer our society and is a deserved winner. It is still a free cash gift… GET IT!

Polls start opening in under 12 hours but felony convictions disenfranchise more than 5 million people, including 7% of the African-American community. A major contributor to the problem is the school-to-prison pipeline: A system of flawed policies that send at-risk youth—especially people of color—directly into the criminal justice system.
Mic’s The Movement (@the-movemnt) did an Issue Time on the subject. It’s well worth your time, and it’ll give you plenty to chew on when you ✧・゚*go and vote tomorrow*・゚✧

I #SocialWork and I Vote! I hope you’ve taken the time to look at the issues, policy implications, and vote (or drop off your ballot). Our long national nightmare is almost over!
I often get these confused.

"Feerless" is seriously incredible and important.
A Google Chrome extension that you can press when you think something may be triggering to another person out there. It’s a crowd-sourced thing, so the more people use it, the more it will be able to warn us 30 seconds in advance so we can decide if we want to keep watching. Brilliant.

Submission from Myra Giberovitch ([email protected]
Davenport, Iowa, June 23 – While disability issues are not yet hot-button topics in the presidential campaign, they are becoming more prominent.
I want to hear more about Senator Sanders’ stance on Disability Rights. I’m not only talking about Social Security, although that’s an important issue. I want to hear about what he would do about:
reducing discrimination in the workplace
the fact that only about 1/6 people with disabilities are employed
the fact that many agencies/businesses are still non-ADA compliant
social workers being required to transport people with disabilities because of lack of public transportation/Paratransit
sheltered workshops sometimes paying people with disabilities mere *cents* an hour - and getting away with it
lifeskills/college programs for young adults with disabilities being cut
the housing crisis for people with disabilities, and the growing waiting list for group homes
Common Core and high-stakes standardized testing’s negative impact on all children, *especially* children with disabilities
adults with disabilities not being able to marry, for fear of losing benefits they need to survive
Medicaid Service Coordinators, caregivers, and other professionals being paid far less than what they deserve (resulting in turnover/lack of competency) because our country does not value people with disabilities
These are all incredibly important issues to me.
Writing. Please Read.
Over the past year, I’ve been trying to write more and more. I’ve realized that when I’m not being pressured to do so, I love to write. Now that I’m done with school, there aren’t as many deadlines. I can take my time, do research, gather my thoughts, edit and re-edit. I can focus on the things I want to write about, rather than churning out papers.
Some of my published works are here: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]. I also blog about disability, accessibility, and being an international adoptee over at my Wordpress.
On a more personal note, this past year wasn’t the easiest health-wise. My glaucoma (which I’ve had since age nine) has been thankfully under control. No surgeries in 2015! But I was also diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis (an autoimmune disease where the thyroid is attacked) and Fibromyalgia. Being diagnosed with the former was, in some ways, a relief; I had been wondering why I was constantly exhausted and continuing to gain weight. Although the medication is helping, I’m nowhere near 100%.
In short, writing is one of the things I can focus on even when I’m not feeling well. It’s definitely something I’m grateful for.
I’ve been told that I’m a good writer, and even asked to contribute to other blogs, and each time I hear it, my heart soars. It’s wonderful to be told you’re good at something you love doing.
I’ve been trying to get my voice out there, but it isn’t easy. I’m making this post to ask for a little help.
It would mean a lot to me if you could share any of my pieces of work (listed above). I would also love, and be honored to connect with any mutuals/friends on LinkedIn. Any endorsement/recommendation I receive for my writing makes a big difference.
Thank you so much for reading.
Hi! I love your blog! I was wondering, did you attend graduate school right after you received you bachelors? I'll get my BSW in May 2016 and I was thinking of waiting a year, getting some real world experience in the field, then going for my MSW. I was just curious on your opinion. Thanks!
Yes I did. I really felt sure that social work was what I wanted to do and I did enough volunteering to be able to get an idea of what the work was like. I am happy with my decision to go straight through because I feel like it gave me a jump start on my career and is putting me ahead of where most social workers my age are. In class I was a little bit out of sorts sometimes compared to my more experienced classmates but it was great to learn from them. If you have some doubts then consider working for a year first, because you definitely wouldnt want to start a program and then realize it is not a good match..
Hi. I'm one of your new followers and I was wondering if you can tag sexual assault and rape if you don't already. Thanks and have an awesome day! You deserve it.
Happy to have you following :) I do tag my posts that have possibly triggering content.
