The life of a tree. Decades pass as the stoic prescene of a tree becomes rooted further and further into its space. An epic struggle ripped from the seed and forced its way into the earth; stealing light from the sun and food from the earth in a hopeless attempt to pierce the sky. I am sometimes jealous of the life of a tree, for it is unshakeable and unchanging, a witness to all that transpires. So much light, food and energy a tree collects in its lifetime, but it is a lifetime that is shared alone. What is the point of collecting it at all? Above the earth live the ridges and shapes that reach for the sky, looking to touch the heavens. These mountains tower over us, blocking out the nourishing light of the sun, the source of all life. Their epic presence reminds of how small we are, but in spite of it all, we transcend. Where some see obstacles, others see platforms to stand on, to look at the majestic creations of Earth. Do you ever look around at the materials around you and notice their texture? Their composition? Our perception of the universe comes partly from the visual landscape that the mind creates. I noticed this river reflecting the sliver of light remaining from the setting sun. It reminded me that all things work together; the darkness of the mountains shapes the skylight. As a photographer, I'm always looking for something to enter my visual field and capture me. Take me away from the predictable and rehashed thoughts of everyday life.
