Humans Are Space Orcs: Colour blindness

I remember seeing a number of HASO posts a while ago referencing Blashko's lines (and how they'd be visible to alien capable of seeing infrared) and a particular fic where the premise was reversed and an alien species was exicited to find out they had stripes visible to their human crewmates because human vision could distinguish between more shades of colour than they could.

Now, given that some animals have a genetic predisposition towards certain types of colourblindness (apparently being colourblind makes spotting camouflage easier) how would such a species react to non colorblind humans? Or how would an alien react to finding out their human crewmate is colourblind?

{I'm... What?} translated the small device at Jhæaii's wrist, while their native language vibrated the nearby floor and halfway up Tammi's calves.

"Red. Like blood... Well, blood isn't always pure red, but it looks mostly-" Tammi attempted, but slowed when she felt Jhæ begin to speak.

{Human blood is a muddy blue-green, Tammi.} Jhæaii gestured to her cheeks with what Tammi had learned, over these few weeks since arriving at the space station, was a look of baffled incredulity.

"No, it's red; I mean, it looks more obvious when there's a lot probably, but-" the floor began vibrating again but stronger this time, reaching to her knees.

{It's blue-green!- *exasperated and impatient sigh*......*vocalization of embarrassment* -I apologize for my tone... What I mean is.. Why do you keep referring to what is clearly blue-green by this word "red"? I don't understand, and it is.....quite frustrating.}

"You don't know that red is?" Jhæaii put one of their digits to the device on their wrist, listening carefully, but stopping when they realized a quick explanation wasn't forthcoming.

{I know that it is a Human word, and that it refers to color, but it has never made any sense to me how it is used, as the colors you use it for range from practically white to grey, and many different greens, blues, purples, violet, ultraviolet a, ultraviolet c. It's not just this "red" word, either. There are so many completely different colors, yet you categorize them under bizarre, illogical terms like "yellow," "red," "peach," "orange," "pink"...}

It was Tammi's turn to interrupt.

"Pink? Ultraviolet? Wait... Wait a minute! I think I know what's going on! You're colorblind!"

{No. I'm-} Jhæaii barely began...

"Oh that explains everything!! My brother's colorblind, you know, in humans it's more common in males, but I guess I never even considered... Hold on! I'll be right back!" Tammi turned and off, leaving Jhæ wincing for a moment from her steps, before staring at the empty hall she disappeared down, and clicking their mandible tips in a nervous action, before briefly turning down the sensitivity of their translator as Tammi came thundering back.

"Here, look at this." Tammi grinned, offering her module, which was displaying a page of information.

Jhæaii read, slowly at first then faster, As Jhæ moved down the page, they were suddenly startled by one of the page's graphics, and pulled the module closer, first to their upper eyes, then further for the lower ones, and back again. They looked at Tammi, then to the module with intensity.

Jhæ continued reading, unconsciously sitting on a nearby bench, oblivious to Tammi's gleeful spectating.

At one point, they noticed an image that looked like a crudely proportioned, comically small, crawling, and scandalously naked version of themself, with an almost obscenely large posterior.

Selecting the picture, even more information comes up, which causes Jhæ to read for many minutes, feverishly jumping from page to page, until coming across one with a human in a "red" and blue costume, and after a moment, they suddenly jump up so forcefully their hair grazed the ceiling.

{Is THIS why Jake keeps calling me "Spiderman"?!?!} Tammi fell to the ground in a fit of laughter so deep, Jhæaii didn't need their translator to detect it, even while holding their face in their hands, overcome by the alienness and audacity of this strange hairless species.

Jhæaii ("Jee-eye") is based on wolf spiders, which have two cones in their eyes instead of the three that humans have, so their color vision includes only greens and blues, plus the ultraviolet spectrum. They also communicate through vibrating, and feeling vibrations through their legs. 😊

Sorry if this isn't great/has glaring mistakes etc, I really wanted to explore this idea, so banged it out in like two hours at 5am, when I really should've been sleeping instead 😅

Been reading a bunch of humans are space orcs related things and it’s reminded me how much I love the concept.

The base concept, humans are actually really scary/unique to aliens, already has so much world-building built into it ‘cause now you have to figure out what kind of intergalactic society would find humans strange/dangerous. How you go about it all really depends on what aspects of humanity you want to explore, that’s really the heart of the concept. It’s a fun way to write an outsider pov on humanity and very explicitly explore some interesting themes while also getting to fuck around with space sci-fi stuff!

Idk, I’m having writing thoughts and may have binge read too much stuff. I just like aliens and contemplations on humanity okay?
