Taegyu | farewell, neverland
Part 4
~Summary
Beomgyu traced the back of his fingers down Taehyun's forearm, leaving his skin burning and tingling where they touched. He laced their fingers together and leaned in close.
âCome away, Taehyun,â Beomgyu whispered, his lips brushing Taehyunâs ear. âCome away to a place where it can just be you and me.â
Taehyun shivered.
âOkay,â he breathed. âOkay, letâs go.â

Part 4: Tinnitus
Taehyun spent most of the next morning restlessly pacing inside the willow. He kept running through everything Yeonjun, Kai, and Soobin had told him about Heeseung, trying to make sense of it all so he could decide how to approach Beomgyu when he returned.
There are too many holes in the story, Taehyun thought, frustrated. How much was really Beomgyuâs fault, and how much did he really know about what was happening?
He ran his hands through his hair and glanced at the door to Beomgyuâs bedroom.
I could go find Kaiâs lockpick and go see the hourglass for myselfâŠ
He shook his head. He didnât want to break Beomgyuâs trust like that when he didnât even know what really happened.
He resumed his pacing, walking in circles around the dining table. It occurred to him that the easiest way to find out the truth would be to ask Beomgyu himself, but could he be sure Beomgyu wouldnât lie to him? Or that he wouldnât turn on him just for asking? Taehyun desperately wanted to believe that the pirates were wrong about him, so he pushed his doubts aside. He decided he would talk to Beomgyu as soon as he returned and ask him for the truth.
He didnât have to wait much longer. That afternoon, Beomgyu came bursting back into the willow with a pouch of fairy dust in one hand and a bouquet of wildflowers in the other.
âTaehyun, Iâm home!â Beomgyu called out cheerily.
Taehyun stopped his pacing and turned around. Beomgyu stood at the base of the stairs, his hair windswept and his skin glittering with a layer of fresh fairy dust. He smiled at him, and it was like the sun coming out after a long day of rain.
Taehyun couldnât help himself. He hurried over and threw his arms around the other boy.
âHi,â Taehyun sighed. âWelcome back.â
Beomgyu giggled and gave Taehyun a quick kiss on the cheek before pulling away.
âThanks, gorgeous,â Beomgyu said, his grin widening. âI brought you flowers, so youâll know I was thinking of you when I was away.â
Beomgyu held out the bouquet, and Taehyun took it gratefully. It was full of brightly coloured tropical flowers. He recognized a few of them, like a red hibiscus, but some of them were unlike anything heâd ever seen before.
âThese are beautiful,â Taehyun said. âThank you so much.â
Taehyun wandered into the kitchen area and found a large drinking glass to put the flowers in. He filled it with water and placed it in the middle of the dining table, then turned to face Beomgyu.
âHow was your trip?â he asked.
Beomgyu stepped in close and started playing with the hem of Taehyunâs shirt.
âUneventful,â Beomgyu muttered. âI found the fairies late yesterday and flew back as fast as I could today so I could see you. How about you? Did anything interesting happen while I was gone?â
Taehyunâs heart skipped. He felt a lump in his throat, and anything heâd planned to say to Beomgyu about Heeseung vanished from his mind.
âNope!â he sputtered. âPretty boring without you.â
Taehyun cursed himself internally.
Maybe Iâll just have to bring it up when the timingâs better, he thought. He did just get back, after allâŠ
Beomgyu gave him a fond look and wrapped his arms around his neck.
âI missed you,â Beomgyu whispered, and then he leaned in to kiss him.
Taehyun melted against him and wrapped his arms around his waist, letting his lips move against Beomgyuâs. Warmth spread through him, and he hummed happily when Beomgyu reached up to cup his face with his hands. Heâd forgotten how much he craved Beomgyuâs touch, and how great it felt to be with him.
And just like that, his resolve to confront Beomgyu about the Lost Boys faded away. If he was honest with himself, he liked being with Beomgyu, and part of him didnât care what anyone else said. Without any proof, it all seemed like nothing more than rumours anyway, and if there was evidence to be found, itâd show up eventually. Until then, heâd stay right where he was â in Beomgyuâs arms.
Taehyun pulled away just long enough to say, âI missed you too,â then leaned in to connect their lips again.
***
Over the next few days, Taehyun settled back into a comfortable routine with Beomgyu, and everything the Lost Boys told him started to seem increasingly unimportant. Theyâd wake up and make breakfast together, then go explore the island or relax around the willow until nightfall, when they would fall asleep tangled up together.
As another week passed, Taehyun started to feel like he was losing track of time. The days ran together, and it occurred to him that if he were home and time was moving forward like normal, it would have been almost the end of the summer.
It was a thought he struggled to hold on to. He kept feeling like the end of the summer was supposed to have some sort of significance to him, but the idea kept slipping away whenever he tried to think too much about it. It was like tinnitus, a constant buzzing telling him he was forgetting something, or missing something important. Still, he told himself to ignore it, that everything was fine as long as he was with Beomgyu in Neverland, the place where time stood still.
By the time Taehyun found himself following Beomgyu through the forest to go visit a waterfall, he was so used to that buzzing in his head that he hardly noticed it. If he didnât think about it, it faded into the background as if it had always been there.
As Taehyun ambled through the woods, he alternated between glancing at Beomgyu and the uneven ground. He didnât want to lose sight of Beomgyu and risk getting lost, but he didnât want to trip over a log or a tree root either.
The waterfall Beomgyu wanted to show him was at the base of the mountains, and the trees and bushes grew thicker as they got closer. It was humid, and moss hung from branches and carpeted the rocks. The leaves were a deep, rich green, and they grew so closely together that the sunlight rarely reached all the way to the ground, leaving Taehyunâs path in deep shadow. The sound of rushing water grew increasingly loud with every step they took.
Eventually, Beomgyu stopped to hold a branch aside for Taehyun. Beomgyu gestured for Taehyun to step through, a knowing smile on his face. Taehyun looked at him curiously but stepped forward anyway, and his jaw dropped at the sight before him.
He and Beomgyu had emerged from the woods at the base of a waterfall that poured down a cliff into a large, clear pool at the bottom. The cover of branches broke above the pool, and the sun shone down to cast a rainbow through the mist and shimmer off the surface of the water. Trees and plants with large, lush leaves grew right up to the rocky edge of the pool, making the place feel sheltered and private.
âWelcome to the best swimming spot on the whole island,â Beomgyu announced.
Taehyun turned to smile at him. âItâs incredible, of course.â
Beomgyu stepped in close to him, a mischievous glint in his eye.
âThen letâs get this off you and jump in,â Beomgyu said, already tugging up Taehyunâs shirt. âI promise the waterâs perfect.â
Taehyun smirked and raised his arms so Beomgyu could get his shirt over his head and off. Then, he pulled off Beomgyuâs the same way, admiring his bare torso as he did. Beomgyu gave him a warm look, and Taehyun got an idea. He grinned evilly, grabbed Beomgyu around the waist and threw him over his shoulder.
âYah, put me down!â Beomgyu yelled, but he was laughing, and Taehyun ran into the pool and tossed Beomgyu in in front of him.
Taehyun snickered as Beomgyu came up sputtering, but he was immediately tackled, and both boys fell backwards into the pool.
When they emerged, they were both laughing, and Beomgyu reached forward to brush Taehyunâs wet bangs out of his face.
Taehyun looked at Beomgyuâs smiling face and stared into his eyes, just admiring the beauty of his features â the delicate curve of his jaw and the plushness of his lips. Even dripping wet, Beomgyu was the most beautiful person heâd ever seen. He couldnât help himself. He leaned in to kiss him, just because he could.
Beomgyu returned his kiss and tilted his head a little for a better angle. He nipped at Taehyunâs bottom lip then slid their tongues together. Taehyun put his arms around Beomgyuâs neck and tugged on his hair, making Beomgyu moan into his mouth. He felt Beomgyu reach down to lift him up by his thighs, and Taehyun wrapped his legs around Beomgyuâs waist as Beomgyuâs hands wandered to his backside. Taehyun untangled a hand from Beomgyuâs hair to feel across his lean back and chest, and he thought that kissing Beomgyu might be his new favourite thing.
When Beomgyu finally broke away, he leaned his forehead against Taehyunâs. He smiled softly and said, âYouâre so perfect, Taehyunnie. Iâm so happy with you.â
Taehyun hummed then pulled back a bit, a thought he couldnât quite grasp lingering on the edge of his mind.
âDid you just call me âTaehyunnie?ââ he asked.
Beomgyu pouted. âDo you not like it?â
âNo, itâs cute. Itâs just, there was someoneâŠâ
Taehyun frowned. He was sure heâd heard someone call him that before, but he wasnât sure who. He wracked his brain for a moment, glimpses of faces around a dinner table flashing in his mind. There was a man and a woman, but he couldnât see them clearly. Every time he got close, they slipped away.
Taehyun shook his head. âNever mind. I thought someone else used to call me that too, but I canât remember.â
A hint of darkness flashed in Beomgyuâs eyes, so quick that Taehyun almost missed it. But then he was smiling.
âIâm glad you like it.â
***
That evening, Beomgyu and Taehyun made their way back through the woods towards the willow. Beomgyu had decided to let Taehyun lead the way home, and he was rewarded by a view of the other boyâs strong back and perfect ass. Itâd been a beautiful day just spending time with Taehyun, who he liked so much, and he sighed contentedly to himself as they walked.
How did I get so lucky? Beomgyu thought.
It was nearly dark by the time they got close to the willow. Beomgyu was thinking about how nice it would be to fall asleep with Taehyun in his arms, when a small stone flew out of the forest onto the ground in front of him.
Beomgyu paused and glanced to the side where the stone had come from. He saw Soobin poke his head out from behind a tree and gesture for him to come over.
He groaned internally.
I guess Iâd better talk to him this time.
âHey Taehyun,â Beomgyu called out.
Taehyun stopped just up ahead of him and turned to give him a curious look.
âI think I saw something in the woods, and I want to take a closer look,â Beomgyu lied. âDo you think you can make it back to the willow from here? Iâll meet you there soon.â
Taehyun frowned, but he nodded. âSure, just donât be too long or Iâll worry.â
Beomgyu gave him a warm smile. âI promise Iâll be back before you can miss me.â
That seemed to satisfy Taehyun, and he continued down the path toward the willow. As soon as he was out of sight, Beomgyu stepped to the edge of the woods, and Soobin came out to meet him.
âAre you here to lecture me?â Beomgyu asked icily.
Soobin looked at him sadly. âYou know, youâre going to destroy him if youâre not careful.â
Beomgyu shook his head furiously. âNever. I love him.â
âLove?â Soobin scoffed. âBeomgyu, he doesnât remember who he is. Youâve made yourself into the only thing in his life. How can you call that love?â
Beomgyu clenched his fists tight.
âShut up. I love him, and I think he loves me too.â
âEven if you did love him, how can he love you back when heâs under your spell? Do you think heâd still choose you if he wasnât?â
Beomgyuâs eyes started burn. He didnât want to think about it, didnât want to acknowledge the fear Soobinâs words brought to the surface.
âStop it! You have no idea what Iâm dealing with!â
âMaybe I would know if youâd just explain for once,â Soobin sighed. âRegardless, you wouldnât be this worked up if some part of you didnât think I was right. JustâŠthink about what I said.â
With that, Soobin turned and disappeared back into the trees. Beomgyu was left alone, and a seed of guilt and doubt started to take root in his heart.
***
Beomgyu was restless. Ever since they returned from their day at the waterfall, he seemed distant. He was still affectionate, but Taehyun often felt like his mind was somewhere else.
Theyâd spend their time like they always did, hanging around the willow or exploring the island, but Beomgyu was uncharacteristically quiet and fidgety. Sometimes, Taehyun would have to call his name twice or repeat himself to get his attention. At night, Beomgyu still climbed into bed with him and held him close, but he no longer whispered sweet words to him as he fell asleep or kissed him goodnight. Taehyun tried to ask him what was bothering him, if it was something he did wrong, but Beomgyu just smiled at him and told him not to worry.
Time continued to slip by until one afternoon when Taehyun and Beomgyu were lying in the hammock together, watching the clouds through the leaves above. Taehyun had his head on Beomgyuâs chest, content to just be with him and enjoy the silence, when Beomgyu suddenly spoke up.
âTaehyun,â Beomgyu murmured. âDo you ever miss your home?â
Taehyun propped himself up on one elbow and looked at the other boy curiously. Beomgyu was looking at him intently, lips pursed into a frown.
There was something Taehyun could just begin to imagine, the impression of some other place he once knew well, like a dream heâd had many times. He could almost see a young woman, someone who shared a resemblance to him, but it was gone before he could grasp it. He looked back into Beomgyuâs lovely wide eyes, and the thought was gone completely.
As long as Iâm with Beomgyu, Iâll never need to go home.
Suddenly, confusion struck him.
What am I thinking? This is my home. Home is with Beomgyu.
If there was somewhere he had come from before, it didnât matter.
âWhat do you mean?â Taehyun asked. âYouâre my home.â
Beomgyuâs lips parted in a shaky breath, and his eyes grew shiny.
âOh,â he said quietly. âRight.â
***
After that day, Beomgyu went from distant to nearly unreachable. He barely spoke when the two of them were together, and he would often disappear for hours a day, claiming he was trying to figure something out and needed some space to think. Each day, Taehyun grew increasingly worried, stuck pacing around the willow and wondering if Beomgyuâs strange behaviour was his fault.
What was worse, a fog had descended over Taehyunâs mind. There were images that tried to materialize, things he felt were probably important, yet when he tried to grasp onto them, they vanished. The only thoughts that he could sustain were worry over Beomgyu, and pieces of things the Lost Boys had said.
Taehyun couldnât help but think that Beomgyuâs daily disappearances reminded him a lot of what Yeonjun said about Beomgyu and Heeseung disappearing sometimes not long before Heeseung died. If he was honest with himself, it was starting to scare him.
Things came to a head when Beomgyu came back from one of his walks with a mermaid scale stuck to his shorts. Beomgyu entered the willow and Taehyun stood up from his seat at the dining table, ready to greet him, when he noticed the shining blue and gold scale on Beomgyuâs thigh.
âWhatâs that?â Taehyun asked cooly, pointing.
Beomgyu looked down, and his eyes widened. Hastily, he brushed the scale away.
âItâs not what you think, I promise,â Beomgyu pleaded. âI know how you feel about the mermaids. I justâI needâthereâs something I need help with and I thought the mermaids might have answers.â
Taehyunâs chest felt tight. âWhy didnât you ask me to come with you then? Maybe I couldâve helped.â
Beomgyu shook his head, expression pained. âI canât, Iâm sorry. Itâs something I need to do on my own. Please trust me, Taehyunnie.â
âI guess thatâs all I can do these days isnât it?â Taehyun pouted. âJust have to stay here alone and take your word for it.â
Beomgyu walked over and squeezed Taehyunâs hands in his.
âI promise Iâll explain everything eventually,â Beomgyu muttered. âJust give me some time.â
Taehyun nodded, not wanting to refuse Beomgyu anything, but the hurt and confusion remained.
***
The next morning, Taehyun woke up without Beomgyu next to him, and his heart rate immediately sped up. He flew out of bed and raced into the main room to look for Beomgyu, but he was nowhere to be found. His throat felt tight and he felt his eyes were starting to burn when he finally noticed a note on the dining table.
Taehyunnie, left to go take a walk. Needed some space. Be back this evening. â Beomgyu <3
The note did nothing to calm Taehyunâs frayed nerves, and he collapsed to his knees on the willow floor with the note clenched in his hand. He breathed hard, trying to calm his racing heart.
Why does he keep leaving me? Taehyun despaired. Did he get tired of me and he just doesnât want to tell me?
His thoughts swarmed, a thousand possibilities running through his mind at once. He thought of the mermaid scale on Beomgyuâs shorts and the way Eros and Narcissa had ran their hands all over him. He clenched his fists.
Why would he go to the mermaids instead of me if he wanted to be touched? Is it because we havenât gone all the way yet and heâs tired of waiting? Does he need that to love me? Did he go to the mermaids because I havenât given him my body? Iâll show him â we can do that if thatâs what he wants. Iâll do anything.
He was spiraling, pulling at his hair with tears running down his face, when he noticed Beomgyuâs locked bedroom door out of the corner of his eye.
Or maybeâŠitâs something else.
Taehyunâs breathing slowed, and he stood up and walked over to the door, thinking through the Lost Boysâ stories. He considered the fuzziness in his head and Beomgyuâs disappearances.
Taehyun reached out to turn the doorknob slowly and found it locked, as always.
Maybe heâs really pulling away because he knows I wonât be here much longer.
The dark thought lingered for a moment. Taehyun knew heâd rather believe Beomgyu was frustrated he wouldnât sleep with him than the alternative â that he was tricked into being a sacrifice â but it wasnât possible to rule it out completely. Beomgyu hadnât trusted him enough to tell him about what he was doing every time he disappeared, so maybe he wasnât going to trust Beomgyu either.
Slowly, Taehyun made his way up the stairs to leave the willow. He swung the door open and peered outside, making sure Beomgyu wasnât there when he pulled himself up onto the forest floor. He struggled to his feet and walked to the hammock, Kaiâs words in his head.
If you want to see the hourglass for yourself, I buried a lockpick at the foot of the tree the hammock is tied to.
One side of the hammock was tied to a tall stump, but the other was wrapped around the trunk of thick tree. Taehyun went to the side with the tree and knelt down, brushing aside dead leaves and digging into the dirt until his hand touched cold metal. He grasped the object and cleared off the dirt until the lockpick glinted in the palm of his hand.
He stood and made his way back into the willow until he found himself face to face with Beomgyuâs bedroom door. He knelt down and put the lockpick in the lock, fiddling with it until the door finally clicked open. Taehyun stood again, looking at the door, and took a deep breath.
Thereâs no coming back from this.
Cautiously, Taehyun pushed the door open, revealing the room beyond. He stepped inside, and light from the living area flooded in, illuminating the roomâs irregular shape and the exposed bark of the great willow that made up the walls.
There was a large, round bed pushed against the right side of the room, the sheets such a dark green they were almost black. The huge roots of the willow twisted horizontally and at odd angles, creating alcoves where Beomgyu had stored clothes and various objects. Taehyun almost thought there was nothing in there worth hiding, until he turned to the back left corner.
There in one of the largest alcoves was an object, about the size of his torso, with a black sheet thrown over it. It seemed to be set back as far as it could go, shadows concealing it further.
Taehyun stared for a moment, and his breath hitched. His heart beat hard. He forced himself to approach.
He walked slowly until he was standing directly in front of the alcove, the large object sitting at about chest height. In the silence, he could hear the soft hiss of small grains sliding against glass, and any doubt he had about Yeonjun and Kaiâs story was fading fast.
Taehyun took a breath and grabbed hold of the sheet. In one quick sweep, he pulled it away, revealing the large object underneath.
The hourglass was framed by warm, red wood carved into leaves and vines that held the glass in place. Inside the glass, a glittering gold powder poured from the top part down into the bottom. It was the same substance that coated Beomgyuâs perfect skin and made him fly: fairy dust.
The whole thing was beautiful, but it didnât matter. Taehyun fixated on the dust in the top part of the glass â less than a quarter full.
Heâs running out of time, and Iâm the biggest fool there is.
With shaking hands, Taehyun hastily through the sheet back over the hourglass, concealing it once again. He rushed from the room and closed the door behind him, then leaned against it and closed his eyes to think.
He clung desperately to the idea that the hourglass didnât mean anything and all Beomgyu wanted was his body after all, but the evidence was overwhelming. Taehyun began to pace, rubbing his face as confusion and panic started to set in. He couldnât bring himself to believe it â didnât want to believe it â so he pushed everything down and away, letting denial settle over his mind like a salve.
No, this canât be true. Iâll test him. If heâll sleep with me, he must love me, right? And if I just love him enough too, itâll be fine.
In a daze, Taehyun went outside and leaned against the trunk of the willow. He sunk to the ground and sat still, waiting for Beomgyu to come home.
Hours later, when the setting sun cast long shadows across the ground, Beomgyu emerged from the woods. His hair was disheveled, and he had deep bags under his eyes.
Taehyun stood up immediately, ignoring the creaking in his legs from sitting in one place for so long. He ran to throw his arms around Beomgyu.
Beomgyu startled, stiffening under Taehyunâs embrace, then relaxed to wrap his arms around his waist.
âHi gorgeous,â Beomgyu said quietly. âDid you miss me that much?â
Taehyun ignored the stinging in his eyes and crushed his lips against Beomgyuâs. If Beomgyu wanted his body, heâd give it to him then and there.
Beomgyu squeaked with surprise and pulled back a bit, then gave in and kissed Taehyun back.
Taehyun kissed him hungrily, letting his hands roam across Beomgyuâs back and over his chest. Beomgyu responded as enthusiastically as always, sucking on Taehyunâs bottom lip and pulling his hips flush against him.
This is it, Taehyun thought. If he loves me, heâll have me.
Taehyun moved to kiss along Beomgyuâs neck, and Beomgyu tilted his head, a soft moan escaping his lips. Encouraged, Taehyun continued across Beomgyuâs collarbone and let his hands drift over his ass. But when Taehyunâs hands moved to his hips and started to slide beneath his waistband, Beomgyu reached out to hold him still.
âTaehyun, wait. We havenât talked about this.â
âWhy?â Taehyun pouted. âIsnât this what you wanted? I can be so much better than those mermaids I promise.â
Beomgyu took a step back, sputtering. His brow creased deeply.
âWhat? No, I told you nothing happened with them, I promise. You donât need to worry about that.â
âThen whatâs the problem?â Taehyun demanded. âDonât you want me?â
âOf course I do, but youâre not acting like yourself. It isnât right.â
âI donât care. I just want you.â
Taehyun took a step forward, reaching for Beomgyu again, but Beomgyu put a hand on his chest to stop him.
âTaehyun, we canât. Not when youâre like this.â
The rejection stung, and Taehyun felt the tears heâd been holding back finally leak from his eyes. If Beomgyu didnât want him, there was only one explanation left for the hourglass.
âI knew it,â Taehyun whispered. âThey were all right. You donât love me. You were using me to keep your hourglass going.â
Beomgyuâs jaw dropped, and he reached out as if to grab Taehyunâs hand. âHow did youÂâNo, Taehyun. No. Let me explainââ
Taehyun slapped his hand away.
âJust stop. Youâre a liar. And I was just another toy for you to play with.â
Taehyun turned and ran into the woods, ignoring Beomgyuâs calls for him to come back. His tears stung his eyes, the weight of his own foolishness crushing his heart.
He crashed through trees, wanting to be anywhere that was away from Beomgyu, but the fog in his mind was growing thicker, quickly clouding out the few remaining traces of clarity.
He tried to move in the direction he thought would take him deeper into the woods, but everything was a blur. Leaves and tree trunks and bushes and roots bled together in the twilight until he could hardly move. The world spun, and the forest floor rose up to meet him.

Part 3: Happy Fools
Beomgyu slept in Taehyunâs bed with him every night after that, and Taehyun found he was getting used to waking up beside him. Their days were just as warm and affectionate, and Taehyun found he wanted to learn as much about Beomgyu as possibly could, to really get to know him.
He learned that Beomgyu hated tomatoes and loved to dance. He could be loud and funny at times, but he was also incredibly introspective and felt things very deeply. He was elusive and vague about his past, but he was always unwaveringly kind. Taehyun wished heâd open up to him more, but he thought that was something that would come with time.
If their circumstances had been normal, Taehyun wouldâve wanted to call Beomgyu his boyfriend. He thought they behaved the way a couple would and knew their feelings for each other were mutual, but he didnât feel the need to put a label on it. In Neverland, where Taehyun and Beomgyu could just exist as they were, making such distinctions seemed unnecessary.
After another week had past, Beomgyu approached Taehyun as he was tidying up the dishes after breakfast.
âSo, it turns out Iâm out of fairy dust,â Beomgyu started, looking a little sheepish. âI didnât realize I was running out, and the fairies migrate to the mountain caves from the day after the midsummer festival for the next four months. Itâll probably take about three days to track them down and convince them to give me a new supply.â
Taehyun set down the dishcloth he was holding and turned to Beomgyu, who was picking at the hem of his shirt guiltily. He raised an eyebrow.
âWhy do you look so worried? I donât mind going on a hike for a few days.â
Beomgyu shook his head apologetically.
âThatâs the thing. I canât take you with me. The fairies are really secretive about the source of their magic dust, and theyâll only share if I go alone. Iâm really sorry.â
Taehyun frowned. âOh. I see.â
Beomgyu reached out to take Taehyunâs hands. âI know it sucks. I donât want to leave you either, but not being able to access my magic makes me uneasy. Do you think youâll be okay on your own for a few days?â
Taehyun snorted. âPlease. Iâm not that fragile. Iâll be fine. Iâll just miss you while youâre gone, thatâs all.â
Beomgyu grinned and leaned in to give Taehyun a light kiss.
âIâm going to miss you too, but Iâm sure you can handle yourself. Just promise me you wonât go too far from the willow and that youâll stick to paths you know, okay? This place is unpredictable, and I donât want anything to happen to you.â
âI promise,â Taehyun sighed. âIâll be right here waiting for you when you get back.â
***
Taehyun helped Beomgyu pack a bag with some supplies to take on his journey and sent him off with a kiss later that afternoon. He made Beomgyu promise to be careful and that heâd come straight back. Even though he was confident he could handle being on the island by himself, the thought of something happening to Beomgyu, leaving him alone there forever, made his stomach turn.
For the rest of the day, Taehyun tried to keep himself busy around the willow, mostly staying inside or resting in the hammock well within view of the tree. He kept what Beomgyu said about staying close by in mind, but it wasnât the same without him. By the time he crawled into bed for the night, he was acutely aware of how alone he really was. Every creak of the great tree above him woke him from his sleep, and the sounds of the forest outside seemed louder and more sinister than they ever had when he was with Beomgyu.
When the next morning came, Taehyun decided he couldnât continue like that the whole time Beomgyu was gone. He couldnât live in fear of the island, so he would do some exploring of his own. Once he finished his breakfast, he changed into the vest and cargo shorts Beomgyu lent him and set out into the forest.
Outside, it was another beautiful day. The air was warm and fragrant, and rays of sunlight filtered down through the trees. Taehyun started down a path that he knew would take him towards the sea, determined to enjoy his day swimming and relaxing on the sand as he had many times before with Beomgyu.
Itâs just the beach. It canât be that dangerous.
He walked down the path with his eyes straight ahead, ignoring any strange sounds he heard coming from the forest. Beomgyu had told him to stick to paths he knew, so even though the beach was a bit far, he would at least heed that warning.
He was so focussed on looking ahead that he didnât notice the root on the ground by his feet. His foot caught when he tried to take another step forward, sending him sprawling to the ground and straight into a pirate trap.
As soon as Taehyun hit the ground, a rope net sprung up around him and pulled him into the treetops, along with the dead leaves and plants that had been concealing the trap on the forest floor. He struggled into a sitting position and pulled his knees into his chest, then gazed the ground several feet below him.
Fuck.
Taehyun took a deep breath in and tried to evaluate his situation. He looked up and saw that the net was hanging from a branch not too far above him. If he stretched his body out and up enough, he could grasp it with his hands. He thought about trying to break the branch to slide the net free, then decided against it. He was hanging high enough above the ground that he may be injured if he fell. The best plan was to look for a weakness in the net and make a hole big enough to free himself, then climb along the branch and down the tree.
He examined the knots in the net and discovered that whoever made it must have been quite skilled. The rope was thick, and the knots were solid. He moved around as much as he could in the trap, looking carefully for anything he might have missed. After a few more minutes, he found what he was looking for â a small, loose strand of rope that was starting to fray down next to his left knee.
Perfect. I can work with that.
Just as Taehyun started to pull at the fraying rope in the hopes of unravelling it, the sound of someone scrambling through the woods yelling jolted him out of his concentration. Alarmed, he looked down and saw a tall, lanky boy with disheveled hair and worn clothes burst out of trees below him.
âGot you, Beomgyu!â the boy exclaimed. âNot so tough now are y â Wait, youâre not Beomgyu.â
Taehyun frowned. Heâd been imaging the pirates as big and burly with guns and swords, but the boy below him seemed like he was just another teenager around his age. Even if he was the one who set the trap, he didnât look particularly scary.
âNo, Iâm not Beomgyu,â Taehyun called down. âWho the hell are you? Let me go!â
The boy grinned. âIâm Kai â sailor on the good ship Happy Fools! Who are you?â
âLet me out of this net and maybe Iâll tell you!â Taehyun yelled.
Kai laughed. âOh, right! Hold on a second.â
The other boy stepped off the path and pulled aside a bush to reveal a tree with the other end of the rope wrapped around it. He untied it from the tree and let it go slowly, lowering Taehyun to the ground. Taehyun squirmed around until he was kneeling, still confined by the net around him.
Kai walked back to stand in front of Taehyun with his arms crossed, looking down at him expectantly.
âAlright, fine,â Taehyun sighed. âMy nameâs Taehyun. Are you happy now?â
Kai nodded.
âGreat. So, are you going to let me go then?â
Kai smirked. âHmm, donât think so, actually. Iâve seen you around. Youâre Beomgyuâs new toy. Yeonjunâs going to have to meet you.â
Taehyunâs heart started beating faster. âWhat! Iâm not who youâre looking for anyway! Who the hell is Yeonjun?â
âWouldnât you like to know! Well, I guess youâre going to find out soon enough. Youâre coming with me.â
Taehyun tried to struggle, but Kai was stronger than he looked. In a few moments, the taller boy had Taehyun out of the net with his hands tied tightly behind his back and was parading him through the forest towards the beach.
Kai pulled Taehyun across the sand to the edge of the water where a shabby two-person rowboat was waiting for them. Taehyun eyed it warily, not feeling confident about its ability to float, but Kai had no such hesitation. He climbed in and took a seat, pulling Taehyun in with him. Then, he grabbed the oars and used them to push the boat off the shore and into the water.
Kai rowed with his back to the open sea, with Taehyun sitting in front of him. As they got further from the shore, Taehyun felt his heart beat harder and struggled to keep his breathing even. He tested the rope that kept his wrists bound behind him and found it held tight. If he tried to escape by jumping overboard, he wasnât sure he could make it all the way back to shore with his hands tied. Heâd have to bide his time.
After a few more minutes of rowing, Taehyun looked up and saw what he assumed was their destination. Directly in Kaiâs path, a small sailboat floated nearby. It had looked bigger when Taehyun had seen it on his first day on the island, but its black flag made it unmistakably the same boat. Up close, the flag looked like a pillowcase with scraps of white fabric sewn into the shape of a skull and crossbones. The words Happy Fools were painted in black on the side of the hull.
As they got closer, Taehyun saw a boy fiddling with some ropes at the back of the boat. He had long dark hair that was pulled back into a ponytail, and his clothes looked as worn as Kaiâs. When he noticed the rowboat approaching, he looked up. He smiled and waved to Kai, then frowned when he saw Taehyun. He waited for Kai to pull up to right against the side of the boat before he spoke.
âKai, you told me your trap caught Beomgyu,â the boy groaned. âWho the hell is this?â
âThis is Taehyun,â Kai announced. âHeâs Beomgyuâs new toy.â
The boy with the ponytail handed Kai a rope, which Kai promptly used to tie the rowboat to the sailboat.
âSo youâre the last one Beomgyu flew in,â the boy said. âNo surprise you ended up here, Pinky. Beomgyu only chooses pretty toys to play with.âÂ
Taehyun scowled. Pinky? Was that a dig at my hair?
âMy nameâs not Pinky, itâs Taehyun, and Iâd appreciate it if youâd stop calling me a toy. Who the hell are you anyway?â
The boy shrugged. âSorry, Pinky. Gotta call it like it is. Iâm Yeonjun, captain of this fine pirate vessel.â
Kai finished tying the boats together and climbed into the sailboat to join Yeonjun. Together, they pulled Taehyun in too and sat with him beneath the sail.
âNo offense,â Taehyun snarked, âbut you guys donât really seem like pirates.â
âThatâs because weâre not,â Yeonjun said. âThe only treasure weâre after is Beomgyu, but just because heâs the only one who can get us off this damn island. Otherwise, we wouldnât be doing this.â
âI donât see why Iâm here then.â
âItâs simple,â Kai announced. âIf Beomgyu liked you enough to bring you here, heâll come looking for you. Weâll use you as bait or hold you for ransom until he gives us what we want.â
Taehyun frowned. âAnd what do you want from him anyway?â
âIsnât it obvious, Pinky?â Yeonjun scoffed. âWe want Beomgyu to bring us home.â
Taehyun tilted his head, confused. âWhat do you mean? If youâre wannabe pirates, arenât you from here?â
Yeonjunâs expression suddenly changed from scornful to sympathetic. It made Taehyun uncomfortable, like there was something he was missing about the whole situation. He fidgeted against the ropes that bound his wrists.
âI guess Beomgyu didnât tell you about us then,â Yeonjun murmured. âHe brought Kai and I here just like you a long time ago. We used to be his friends. We were part of the Lost Boys.â
Taehyun shook his head, unable to reconcile what Beomgyu had told him with Yeonjunâs answer. It didnât make sense.
âBut Beomgyu said the Lost Boys all had to leave and he was lonely and thatâs why he brought me here,â Taehyun protested. âYou canât be Lost Boys.â
Yeonjun and Kai shared a look. A moment passed where no one spoke, and the sound of water lapping at the sides of the boat filled the silence.
âTaehyun,â Kai started gently. âI donât know what Beomgyuâs told you, but heâs not who you think he is.â
Taehyun scowled. âWhy would he lie? And why should I listen to anything you say when you literally tied me up to use as bait for Beomgyu? Canât say youâve given me a reason to trust either of you.â
Kai leaned towards Yeonjun and spoke quietly. âYou know, he does kind of have a point.â
Yeonjun sighed. âFine. If we agree to untie you, will you at least hear us out?â
Taehyun shrugged. âIt probably wouldnât hurt.â
âAlright. Kai, please untie our captive. Weâll agree to Pinkyâs terms.â
Kai nodded and crawled forward, the boat rocking a bit with his movements. Carefully, he untied the rope and removed it from around Taehyunâs wrists, then went back to his place next to Yeonjun. Taehyun rubbed his wrists and looked at the other boys expectantly.
âOkay, now that weâve got that settled, what do you want to tell me?â
âWell, I guess I can start with me,â Yeonjun began. âBeomgyu brought me here because I was about to start my last year of university, and my parents wanted me to start preparing to take over the family business. I wasnât ready for that â I wasnât even sure I wanted to take over. Beomgyu promised Iâd never have to if I didnât want to, and heâd let me stay on the island until I was ready to leave. When I got here, there were two other Lost Boys here already, Heeseung and Soobin. Kai came a little later.â
âYeah, I was last to join,â Kai added. âMy parents were getting divorced, and Beomgyu said heâd take me to a place where Iâd could pretend it wasnât happening until I could process it.â
âHe really promised us everything,â Yeonjun continued. âAnd we believed him because we wanted to.â
âIt was fun at first!â Kai said. âWe explored the island and did whatever we wanted, and I liked being friends with everyone.â
Yeonjun nodded, a bit wistful. âYeah, it was fun for a while. Then we noticed Heeseung was starting to forget things, and everything went downhill fast.
âIt started with little things. Heeseung had a job back home and plans for his future, but when we brought it up, he acted like heâd never told us about it. He couldnât remember the college he went to or the program he was in. Eventually, he couldnât tell even tell us his old friendsâ names. It was like little bits of the person he was before Neverland were slipping away every day.â
âWe were all really worried about him,â Kai explained. âBut Beomgyu started to get really weird and antsy about it. Heâd get sort of impatient whenever we asked him if he knew what was happening to Heeseung or if there was a way to help him. I guess we just thought he was worried too and dealing with it badly.â
Yeonjun hummed in agreement. âYeah, he got really defensive. Eventually, he and Heeseung started going off places together. They always said they were out trying different things to get Heeseungâs memories back, but it was suspicious because it was like Heeseung just got worse every time they came back.
âThey wouldnât tell us anything either. It got frustrating because Heeseung was our friend too and it made no sense that they werenât letting us, or even Soobin, try to help. Then one day Beomgyu and Heeseung went into Beomgyuâs room to talk, but they didnât shut the door all the way, and wellâŠâ
âWe eavesdropped,â Kai said bluntly. âYeonjun and I talked a lot about them keeping something from us, so we took the chance when it was there. It wasnât like we even broke into the room. We just crouched down where the door was open and looked in while they talked.â
âYou donât have to justify it, Kai,â Yeonjun insisted. âWe had a right to know what Beomgyu was hiding, and I donât regret it. Pinky can judge us if he wants when weâre done explaining.â
Taehyun rolled his eyes. Eavesdropping didnât seem like that big a deal to him, but he had noticed that Beomgyu always kept his bedroom door locked. He wasnât seeing how anything in Yeonjun and Kaiâs story made Beomgyu evil, but he was curious about what Beomgyu could be hiding in his room.
âJust go on,â Taehyun said. âIâll be honest, I still donât get why I should hate Beomgyu though.â
Yeonjun laughed, but it was humourless. âOh weâre getting there, trust me.
âWhen Kai and I looked into Beomgyuâs room, we saw Beomgyu pull a dark sheet off a huge hourglass that looked built into the wall. He and Heeseung talked for a bit, but we couldnât really catch what they were saying because they kept their voices low. Beomgyu seemed like he was in a hurry to cover up the hourglass because he threw the sheet back over it pretty fast. Still, we saw it long enough to notice the sand was pretty low, and the bits of conversation we could catch were Beomgyu saying he was running out of time.â
Running out of time? Taehyun wondered. But how can someone who lives in a world where timeâs stopped run out of time?
Kai spoke before Taehyun could voice his thoughts.
âWe didnât find out any more that day because Heeseung and Beomgyu were almost done talking, and we didnât want to get caught. It ended up not mattering though. We figured out what the hourglass was for pretty soon after.â
Yeonjun jumped in. âWhat Kaiâs saying is that things got really messed up really fast after that. Heeseung disappeared a few days later. We all went out across the island looking for him, but Beomgyu and Soobin found him first. Only by then, it was too late, and Heeseung was gone. The island got him.â
Taehyunâs heart started to beat a bit harder. âWhat do you mean the island got him? Like, he died of exposure?â
Yeonjun shook his head gravely and ran a hand through his hair and over his face. Kai continued for him, his tone somber.
âHe means the island literally absorbed him. When Beomgyu and Soobin came back to tell us Heeseung was dead, Beomgyu locked himself in his room and wouldnât speak to anyone. Yeonjun and I refused to believe it until we saw for ourselves, so Soobin told us where to go, andâŠandâŠâ
Kai took a deep, shaky breath, and looked back at Yeonjun. Yeonjun blinked at him, then sighed deeply.
âHeâŠHe was at the foot of a tree deep in the forest,â Yeonjun said shakily. âBy the time we got to him, it looked like his whole body was just becoming part of the roots. His face was only barely visible, but his skin looked all wrong â almost greenish.â
Yeonjun paused and swallowed before he went on.
âThere was no saving him. He was already gone, and his body was being absorbed by the tree. I bet if we had ever gone back, thereâd be no trace of him left.â
Taehyun took a shaky breath in, trying to wrap his head around it. Beomgyu had warned him the island was dangerous, but he clearly underestimated just how dangerous if even the trees were capable of absorbing someone. Still, he felt like some part of the story was missing.
âThatâs awful,â Taehyun started tentatively. âIâm so sorry. I still donât really understand though. How is it Beomgyuâs fault that he died? Heeseung was on his own, and Beomgyu wasnât with him when he disappeared.â
âBecause Beomgyu brought him here in the first place!â Yeonjun exclaimed. âBelieve me, Pinky, we didnât put it together at first either. Losing Heeseung really rattled us all, so Kai and I decided to ask Beomgyu to bring us home. Beomgyu just kept saying he couldnât, and that we shouldnât worry because we had all the time in the world now. We didnât understand why he was being so horrible after what happened, so we broke into his room to see if we could find a stash of fairy dust to fly home ourselves, and we saw the hourglass was full again â full, and glowing greenish like Heeseungâs skin.â
âYeonjun and I think that the hourglass measures Beomgyuâs time,â Kai said. âWeâre not sure if itâs his life or the island, but itâs definitely connected to him somehow. It was full after the island took Heeseungâs memories and, eventually, his soul.â
âItâs absolutely Beomgyuâs fault that Heeseung died,â Yeonjun insisted. âHe sacrificed Heeseung to the island so he could refill his damned hourglass and keep his eternal youth. And we would have all been sacrifices too if we didnât find a way to break the spell and get our memories back so the island canât steal our souls.â
Taehyun bit his lip for moment. It seemed like a bit of a jump in logic to go from someoneâs memories disappearing to their soul being stolen, but he couldnât think of a different explanation that made sense. If memories were part of someoneâs soul, maybe they really were being slowly taken by the island.
âYou were losing your memories too?â he asked, hoping for more information.
Yeonjun nodded. âIt started happening to all of us. Soobin was the second one Beomgyu brought here, so we noticed it in him first after Heeseung. We tried to warn him and get him to run away with us, but he wouldnât listen. We figured it was too dangerous to stay with Beomgyu where weâd be under his spell, so we decided to run away. It sucked to leave Soobin behind, but we were scared and didnât know what else to do. We still donât know what happened to him after. We like to hope heâs out there hiding somewhere like us and notâŠwell, gone.
âIt turns out being away from Beomgyu doesnât matter though. Kai and I started noticing gaps in each otherâs memories even after we left, so we spent a lot of time looking for a way to free ourselves.â
âSo how did you break the spell?â Taehyun asked. âYou both seem like you remember everything just fine.â
âThereâs magic all over this island,â Yeonjun said. âWe knew there had to be some way, so we went to the mermaids because we thought theyâd be most likely to talk to us, and they did. They told us that as long as weâre on this island, weâd be vulnerable to the spell, so we made a deal with them to protect our souls from the spellâs effects.
âYou probably know by now that nothing on this island will help you without a price. In exchange for immunity to the spell, I canât set foot on land, or the island will take me immediately. For Kai, he canât ever go in the water.â
âThey probably wanted to keep us separated,â Kai added, âbut the boat is a loophole. As long as I donât actually touch the water, I can be here. Yeonjun and I have been getting by using rafts and this boat until we can find a way to catch Beomgyu and force him to bring us home.â
Taehyun frowned, remembering what Beomgyu had told him about what the pirates wanted. Doesnât matter because I canât give it to them anyway. It nagged at him. Maybe it wasnât wise to take Beomgyu at his word, especially after what Yeonjun and Kai had said, but Taehyun wanted to believe Beomgyu had been telling the truth. It seemed like even if Beomgyu really did want to keep them here for their souls, heâd do it by trickery. Why would he keep them here when theyâd found a way to break the spell unless he really couldnât take them back? He couldnât make sense of it.
âIâm sorry,â Taehyun said. âThis is just a lot to take in. Beomgyuâs been so good to me. Thereâs got to be more going on here to explain what happened to Heeseung.â
Yeonjun looked at him seriously. âPinky, you know the name of this ship, right?â
âThe Happy Fools?â
âExactly. Itâs ironic, see? We realized we were fools, and now weâre unhappy. We shouldnât have trusted Beomgyu, and I donât think you should either.â
Taehyunâs head was spinning. Whether Beomgyu was directly responsibly or not, a boy had died on the island, and all the boys were in some degree of danger. Still, when he thought of Beomgyu, he thought of his soft lips, the gentleness of his touch, and his sweet words. Beomgyu had already tried to protect him from so much. He couldnât accept the idea that he may have been lying the whole time.
âBeomgyu said he brought me here because he wanted to fall in love,â Taehyun said quietly. âThereâs got to be some other explanation for everything.â
Yeonjun shook his head. âIâm sorry, Pinky. Heâs using you, just like he used Heeseung. Heâll do whatever it takes to keep you here long enough to steal your soul.â
âYou should forget about him and ask him to take you home before the spell gets too strong,â Kai said. âDonât you have a life at home that you want to get back to? Like a job? University? Friends?â
Taehyun bit his lip and considered this. A job? University? When he thought of home through the fog of his memory, there was nothing like that. He could picture Sunghoon, Jay, and Jake in his mind, but there was something nagging at him that made thinking about them feel a bit sad. He tried to shake himself out of it. After all, why would thinking about his friends make him sad?
âI haveâŠfriends,â Taehyun said, somewhat hesitantly. âIâll see them when I get home. If timeâs stopped, they donât even know Iâm gone anyway.â
Kai frowned and looked at Yeonjun, whose brow furrowed with concern.
âI just donât see the harm in staying until I can actually prove everything youâve told me,â Taehyun insisted. âNo offense, but itâs starting to seem stupid to just blindly trust anyone in this place.â
âFair enough,â Yeonjun sighed. âJust keep what we said in mind. Donât let Beomgyu make you forget things. If you ever change your mind and you need help, you can come back here. Weâll try to figure it out together. I donât want what happened to Heeseung to happen to anyone else. We can even help you make a deal with the mermaids too, if you want.â
Taehyun shuddered, the unwelcome image of Eros and Narcissaâs hands all over Beomgyu invading his mind. He decided heâd rather not ever deal with the mermaids again if he could help it.
âAnd if you want to see the hourglass for yourself, I buried a lockpick at the foot of the tree the hammock is tied to,â Kai offered. âGotta get into the willow to steal supplies sometimes, yâknow?â
Taehyun nodded. âThanks. If youâre past wanting to kidnap me though, I kind of just want to go back and see if I can find out more for myself. If you bring me back to shore, maybe I can figure out a way to get you guys home too.â
Yeonjun laughed bitterly. âDonât take this personally, Pinky, but I think if there was any way besides Beomgyu, we would have figured it out already. We wonât hold you captive though. I want you to see who Beomgyu really is, then you can come back.â He then turned to Kai. âBring Pinky here back to shore. Iâm sure heâll come back to us when heâs ready.â
Taehyun doubted that, but he helped Kai untie the rowboat from the Happy Fools and got in so they could row back to the beach. By then it was nearly dusk, and the sun had begun to sink below the horizon. The wind had died down, making the water calm and easier to row across.
When they reached the beach, Taehyun hopped out of the boat. He breathed a sigh of relief at being back on solid ground, then said goodbye to Kai. He helped push the other boy and his boat back out to sea so Kai wouldnât have to risk touching the water and watched until he faded from view.
As Taehyun finally turned to head back into the forest, he noticed the shadows had grown long across the sand. The path through the woods was starting to get dark, and it made it feel like the trees were closing in around him. He started to hurry back. After everything heâd heard, he really didnât want to get stuck finding his way after the sun had fully set.
Unfortunately, he ran into another unexpected obstacle. Heâd barely started to make his way down the forest path when a tall boy appeared from behind a tree.
Taehyun shrieked in surprise, and the boy offered a small wave in greeting and apology. He had dark shaggy hair, and his clothes looked about as worn as Yeonjun and Kaiâs. Taehyun took a deep breath and tried to compose himself, then regarded this new boy warily.
Fucking hell. What now?
âWho are you?â Taehyun demanded. âIâve had a hell of a day and you better just be a boy and not some crazy island creature or Iâll make this horrible for both of us.â
The boy raised both hands in surrender.
âNo need to do anything dramatic,â he said gently. âIâm as human as you are. My nameâs Soobin. I noticed Yeonjun and Kai got to you earlier and I wanted to make sure I talked to you before you went back to Beomgyu.â
Soobin? Taehyun thought. So he really has just been hiding out here all this time.Â
Taehyunâs head hurt. Soobin being there meant that one more aspect of the piratesâ story was proven true, but it also meant that he was very much alive and Beomgyu wasnât using him. That left him with more questions than answers.
âIâm guessing youâre here to tell me Beomgyuâs evil too?â he asked cautiously.
Soobin shook his head. âNo, Iâm here to find out what they told you and give you my side of the story.â
âThey told me about Heeseung,â Taehyun said slowly, âand how Beomgyu put a spell on him that started stealing his soul by taking his memories until he died, and the island absorbed him. And also that Beomgyu sacrificed him to refill a magic hourglass and keep his eternal youth, apparently.â Taehyun paused, exasperated. âDonât you know all this already? Werenât you there?â
Soobin gave him a patient smile. âI was there, but I remember things a little differently than they do. I think you should take what they said with a grain of salt.â
Taehyun regarded Soobin skeptically. âWhat, so Yeonjun and Kai were lying about the whole thing?â
âThatâs not what Iâm saying,â Soobin explained. âI think they really believe what they said, Iâm just not sure theyâre right. I think Beomgyuâs powers are a lot more limited than Yeonjun and Kai believe they are. Thereâs more to this than what any of us know, so I think itâs up to you to draw your own conclusions until we either figure it out or get the whole story from Beomgyu himself.â
âSo whatâs your version of the story, if you donât think it was Beomgyuâs fault?â
Soobin furrowed his brow. âThe bigger details are mostly the same. Heeseung started to lose his memories until he couldnât remember who he was before Neverland, and he eventually disappeared. Beomgyu and I found his body at the base of that tree, and Yeonjun and Kai blamed Beomgyu for Heeseungâs death and ran away.
âThereâs more to it though,â Soobin continued. âI never saw the hourglass they talk about, but they didnât see the way Beomgyu cried when we found Heeseung.â His voice wavered a little. âHe justâŠhe was devastated. Heeseung had been his best friend, and when we finally found him, Beomgyu just curled up on the ground and sobbed. I couldnât even get him to speak to me for a long while after we got back to the willow.â
Taehyunâs heart clenched. âThat doesnât sound like someone who would sacrifice someone for eternal life.â
Soobin shook his head. âNo, I didnât think so either. The problem is, he does blame himself, and I could never get him to explain why. When Yeonjun and Kai left, I tried to get him to talk to me, but he shut me out and told me to leave because staying with him was too dangerous. I wanted to stay and try to convince him to let me help him, but I was starting to lose my own memories, and I got scared. Beomgyu seemed to think that being far away from him would be enough, so I left. Only, it didnât work, and I had to find a way to break the spell like Yeonjun and Kai did.â
âWhy didnât you ever go looking for them?â Taehyun asked. âThey donât even know for sure that youâre still alive.â
âI didnât have a choice,â Soobin sighed. âI made a deal with the fairies. Every month, they give me a potion that makes me immune to the spell, but the price is that I can never go out in the sunlight. If the sun touches me now, Iâll immediately lose my soul to the island. I can pretty much only come out at night or stay in shadows, and with Yeonjun stuck on the water and Kai never staying away from the beach for long, it was just impossible.â
He's like a vampire â stuck in the dark, Taehyun thought sadly.
âWhy wouldnât Beomgyu just bring you home instead?â Taehyun wondered aloud. âOr take the spell of you? UnlessâŠI donât know. The pirates said he told them he couldnât. Was it the same for you?â
âHe never gives me the chance to even talk about it,â Soobin muttered. âHe just avoids me and tells me Iâm better off staying away from him and wonât tell me why. I think heâs doing the same with Yeonjun and Kai, even if they donât realize it. For some reason, he thinks driving us all away is whatâs best for us.â
Taheyun nodded. Something about the sadness he saw in Beomgyu was starting to make sense, even though he was sure pieces of the story were still missing.
âHe said he brought me here because he wanted to love me,â Taehyun murmured. It was the second time he said it that day, and he wondered if it sounded as foolish to Soobin as it had to Yeonjun and Kai. âWhy would he want to keep someone close like that if heâs been trying to push everyone else away?â
âI donât understand his intentions with you,â Soobin said soberly, âbut I think that if he was going to sacrifice you, he would have by now. I think heâs been terribly lonely, and when he looks at you, itâs like thereâs light behind his eyes again.â
Taehyunâs throat felt tight.
âI donât know what to do,â Taehyun whispered. âI really care about him. None of this makes sense.â
Soobin tentatively reached out to put a hand on Taehyunâs shoulder.
âI think you just have to be careful,â Soobin said. âThis place is dangerous, and Beomgyu has his own secrets. If you want to go back to him, I wonât stop you, but just try to remember everything I said and donât lose yourself to this island.â
âRight,â Taehyun said shakily. âIâll try.â
Soobin nodded, satisfied, and took his hand off of Taehyunâs shoulder. He took a quick glance at the sky and then looked back at Taehyun.
âItâs really starting to get dark now. You should probably head back to the willow.â
Taehyun let out a long breath, exhausted. âYeah. I think I need some rest. This is a lot to deal with.â
âI understand,â Soobin said. âIâll let you go. But if you ever need help, go to the fairy grove and call for me. I usually stay near there because itâs where the woods are the thickest. Beomgyu doesnât want me around, but Iâll come if you need me.â
Taehyun thanked Soobin for his offer, then said goodbye and started down the path towards the willow. He looked back one last time and saw Soobin give him one last wave before disappearing between the trees.
By the time he reached the willow, night had fully fallen, and he could see stars scattered in the spaces between the leaves overhead. When he went inside, he immediately collapsed on his bed and curled in on himself under the sheets. He didnât know what to think anymore.

Part 12: For Your Eyes Only
A few days later, Taehyun sat at a table in the library with Minji. They were supposed to be studying together, but Taehyun couldnât focus. He was too preoccupied watching Beomgyu, who was across the room surrounded by Jiho and Seoyun and a few other students. Occasionally, Beomgyu glanced over at Taehyun and caught him staring, but otherwise, it was like the last few months had never happened.
Beomgyu had respected his wish for some space, and Taehyun was absolutely miserable about it. Aside from the odd wave and the ghost of a smile, Beomgyu had wholly left him alone. Taehyun never got a single text from him, and heâd stopped walking him to his locker after theory. Even Kai was ignoring him. It was true that he didnât have to worry about people reading too much into his and Beomgyuâs actions, but he was starting to wonder if it was really worth it if he missed Beomgyu this much.
When the group of students laughed at something Beomgyu said, Taehyun sighed deeply and fiddled with his pen.
Minji closed her book and stared at Taehyun pointedly.
âOkay, youâve got to tell me whatâs up with you,â Minji said exasperatedly. âIâve been trying not ask, but youâve been mopey all week, and Beomgyuâs been so deflated heâs like a popped balloon. Heâs trying to hide it, but heâs been way quieter than usual. You canât tell me nothing happened.â
Taehyun groaned and put his head in his hands.
âI donât know, everythingâs a mess and I donât know what to do.â
He leaned in across the table so he could keep his voice low and explained everything, from the moment he and Beomgyu kissed to the conversation with Mr. Kim.
âAnd then after that, Beomgyu asked if I wanted to be with him, like officially, and I just got so scared and confused,â Taehyun sighed. âI asked him to give me some space, which is why heâs been leaving me alone, but it sucks. If things were different I would have said yes, but if people found out our lives would both be over.â
Minji frowned as she considered Taehyunâs story.
âThatâs definitely a lot to think about. I wish I could tell you to just forget about what could happen if people found out, but I know itâs not that simple.â
           Taehyun nodded miserably.
âYeah. It just feels like thereâs so much at stake. I donât want Beomgyuâs life to be ruined one day just because of me.â
âWell you know,â Minji mused, âit seems like Beomgyu made up his mind, and he obviously cares about you a lot if heâs willing to take the risk. Thatâs his choice, so you shouldnât worry about deciding for him and think more about what you want.â
           Taehyun frowned and considered that.
âI guess it doesnât seem as selfish when you put it that way. I do really like him. I just donât like thinking about what would happen if we messed it up.â
"I donât know, you just seem so happy when youâre with him,â Minji said. âI know itâs scary, but I donât think you should give that up.â
Taehyun pondered that and looked back towards Beomgyu. His hair had grown out a bit and was starting to fall into his eyes, and the shagginess of it made him seem like just any other boy their age and not the huge star he was. Would he be so worried if Beomgyu wasnât an idol?
But maybe that was the whole point. Beomgyu was an idol, but he was also just Beomgyu, the boy he liked so much. If he thought of himself and Beomgyu as just two boys who liked each other, would that be enough?
âI really do miss him,â Taehyun said. âIâm still not sure, but maybe youâre right.â
Minji smiled and reached across the table to pat Taehyunâs hand.
           âI always am.â
***
For the rest of the day, Taehyun thought more about what Minjiâs said. Was it really worth it to be so dedicated to protecting his reputation that heâd sacrifice his own chances at love and happiness? Would he have to keep running like that for rest of his life? When it came down to it, the warmth he felt with Beomgyu, even just holding his hand, seemed so much greater than his fear.
When he got home that night, Taehyun sat in his room and stared at his phone wishing he could just talk to Beomgyu like before. As he sat there pouting, he realized what he really wanted.
He could spend the rest of his life running from his feelings and being lonely, or he could take a chance and be happy. It was scary, but even if the whole world found out and turned against them, heâd still have Beomgyu, and theyâd face it all together. That is, if Beomgyu still felt the same way.
Beomgyu. I have to tell him. I have to tell him I choose him.
Somehow, sending a text didnât seem like enough. If he wanted to show Beomgyu he was serious and that he was sorry for not coming to his senses sooner, he needed to do something special. He thought back on all the time he spent with Beomgyu, everything that Beomgyu had done to get his attention. There were two memories that suck with him: the sight of boy coming out of the audience in an empty auditorium, and a note asking for an adventure.
He pulled a piece of paper out of his notebook and started to write.
***
The next morning before classes, Taehyun slipped a note into Beomgyuâs locker asking him to meet in the auditorium on lunch to talk. He spent his morning classes nervous and restless, unsure if Beomgyu would come, and wondering what would happen if he did.
When the time came, Taehyun told Mr. Kim that he forgot something in the auditorium and asked if he could borrow the keys to look for it. Despite recent events, Mr. Kim still trusted Taehyun and gave him the keys on the condition that he return them to the main office as soon as he was done with them. Taehyun hated to take advantage of his trust again, but he promised himself that it would be the last time, no matter how things went with Beomgyu.
Moments later, Taehyun stood on the empty stage and leaned against the piano, which still hadn't been moved from where it had been placed for the concert. He stared out at all the empty auditorium seats, then back into the curtains on the other side.
Maybe he isnât coming, Taehyun thought, his heart faltering. I wouldnât blame him though. I didnât give him very much room to hope.Â
He looked behind him and stared at the keys of the grand piano and its empty bench. Heâd always thought there was something so lonely about an instrument left alone without a player, and it hurt him that he didnât know how to play it. It was like a violin with no strings.
Suddenly, the sound of soft footsteps echoed across the empty stage, and Taehyun looked up to see Beomgyu standing across from him. His hair was falling in front of his eyes, so Taehyun couldnât read his expression. He pushed himself off of the piano to stand upright. The other side of the stage felt like the other side of the universe with Beomgyu so far away from him.
âYou came,â Taehyun said. âI wasnât sure you would.â
Beomgyu looked away, but there was a hint of a sad smile on the edge of his lips. âOf course I came,â he said, walking over to Taehyun. âThere was never even a question about it.â
There was something about seeing Beomgyu so close under the stage lights, the way they shone off of his hair and lit up his eyes, even as they hid behind his bangs. He really was a born performer, and Taehyunâs heart ached for him. A step away, but an abyss between them.
Taehyun ran his hand along the top of the piano. âYou never played me that song you promised when we first started texting.â
Beomgyu brushed his hair out of his eyes, and Taehyun could see them shine, deep and brown. He grabbed Taehyunâs hand and led him to the piano bench, pulling him down gently so that they sat together.
Beomgyu looked into Taehyunâs eyes. âIâll play for you as long as you sit next to me. Iâll sing you something.â
Taehyun nodded, and Beomgyuâs hands hovered over the keys. Beomgyu took a breath, as if about to play, then stopped, his fingers just resting on the keys.
âDonât be nervous, Beomgyu,â Taehyun said quietly. âYouâre just playing for me.â
Beomgyu smiled at his hands, remembering what heâd said to Taehyun all that time ago. âBut you make me nervous, Taehyunnie.â
Before Taehyun could answer, Beomgyuâs hands found their place on the keys, and the notes rang out across the empty auditorium. Then, he started to sing.Â
If I could fly Iâd be cominâ right back home to you I think I might Give up everything just ask me to
Taehyunâs eyes burned. This was a beautiful song, but Beomgyu was singing it so sadly. There was nothing else in the whole world, nothing but the sound of the piano and Beomgyuâs voice.Â
Pay attention, I hope that you listen Cause I let my guard down Right now Iâm completely defenceless
For your eyes only Iâll show you my heart For when youâre lonely And forget who you are Iâm missing half of me When weâre apart Now you know me For your eyes only For your eyes onlyÂ
And Beomgyu stopped, the last notes echoing through the room and dying out. He turned to look at Taehyun, eyes shining. There was nothing but longing written on his face, and Taehyun found himself leaning forward, unable to keep himself away.
Beomgyu cupped Taehyunâs cheek in his hand, and Taehyun closed his eyes as Beomgyu gently pulled him forward to kiss him.
It was such a soft, tender kiss, as if Beomgyu had transferred all his longing into his lips so Taehyun could feel it too. It was almost agonizing, how sweet and sad it was. It was unbearable, but it was even more devastating when Beomgyu pulled away.
Beomgyu was looking at him, raw and vulnerable.
âTaehyun, I know itâs risking so much, butââ
Taehyun put a finger against Beomgyuâs lips and shushed him softly.
âNo, stop. The world might think itâs wrong, but that doesnât mean weâre wrong. It doesnât mean that...that itâs wrong for me to love you.â
Taehyun dropped his hand from Beomgyuâs lips, and Beomgyu stared at him, his eyes wide.
âYou love me?â he asked quietly.
Taehyun could feel his ears burning, but he couldnât look away. He hadnât realized he felt that way until the words were out of his mouth, and yet he knew he meant it.
           âYouâre everything, Beomgyu.â
Beomgyu took both of Taehyunâs hands. âI love you too.â
They were so close, their foreheads touching, their hands laced together between them. They stayed like that for a while, breathing each other in, afraid that breaking apart would shatter the moment.
Beomgyu was the first to break the silence. âDoes this mean youâre my boyfriend now?â
Taehyun laughed, leaning in so his nose touched Beomgyuâs. âI literally just told you I love you, so that would be a yes. If the world wants to fight me on it, then Iâll fight back with everything I have.â
Beomgyu smiled. He gave Taehyun another quick kiss, and the sadness evaporated from his face. âIf I could stand on the roof of the school and yell to the whole world that Kang Taehyun is my boyfriend, I would, but I think my manager might die of a heart attack.â
They both giggled, and Taehyun wrapped his arms around Beomgyuâs waist.
âThe whole world doesnât have to know weâre together,â Taehyun said. âFor now, itâs enough that we know, and that I get to kiss you again.â
Beomgyu squirmed in his arms as Taehyun kissed his cheek. Neither could stop smiling.
âYou know, we should probably go before Mr, Kim catches us and gives us another lecture,â Beomgyu said, getting up from the piano bench.
Taehyun nodded. âYeah Iâd rather not have my favourite teacher walk in on me trying to be romantic with my new boyfriend. Again.â
Beomgyu elbowed him, but reached out to grab his hand. Together, the two left the auditorium, the stage lights still shining down on the piano behind them.Â
End.

Part 11: Out of the Closet
Taehyunâs heart jumped into his throat. He didnât dare breathe, let alone move. He could only stare at his teacher, dread spreading through him, and it was a moment before anyone spoke. Mr. Kim eventually broke the silence.
âTaehyun. Beomgyu. You two shouldnât be here. Iâd strongly suggest you get on your way.â
Taehyunâs legs felt like rubber as he hurried out of the room behind Beomgyu, both boys murmuring apologies as they went. Taehyunâs heart hammered in his chest, and he wouldnât meet Mr. Kimâs eyes as he scurried away down the hallway.
Taehyun barely had a moment to share a look with Beomgyu before Yeonjun and Kai appeared, oblivious to the shock their friends were in.
âThere you guys are!â Yeonjun announced. âThat show was incredible, as expected from my members and their friends.â
âThanks, Junie,â Kai sang as he walked up and put an arm around Beomgyu. âWe killed it, and Taehyun totally showed everyone why heâs our concert master.â
Taehyun was sure his face was bright red at that point.
âThanks, Kai,â he managed to respond.
âAnyway, Iâd love to stay and tell you how awesome you all are all night, but we really should be getting back to the company,â Yeonjun said. âEarly schedule tomorrow and all that.â
Kai nodded. âRight. Sorry, Taehyun. Weâd hang out if we could.â
Taehyun and Beomgyu glanced at each other helplessly, and Beomgyu let out a deep sigh.
           âText me?â Beomgyu asked weakly.
âYeah,â Taehyun said, his voice cracking. âYeah, Iâll do that.â
Beomgyu nodded and let himself be dragged away by his bandmates, leaving Taehyun alone in the hallway.
People milled about around him, and he finally felt the rush of it all leaving his body. Taehyun sank against the wall trying to process.
Beomgyu kissed him. Not only that, but he made out with him. Beomgyu told him he liked him. He was elated, but his mind was chaos, an absolute whirlwind of indescribable joy and suffocating grief.
Theyâd been caught. And by a teacher, no less. He wanted to sink to the ground, curl up into a ball, and disappear. He wanted to chase after Beomgyu and hold him forever. He wanted to scream until his lungs couldnât hold air.
What are we going to do?
***
The next day was a Saturday, and Taehyun had nothing to do but pace around his room imaging worst-case scenarios in his head.
What if Mr. Kim tells everyone? What if the whole school finds out? What if it gets out and they announce it on the news and Blue Hour has to disband because Beomgyuâs gay? What if SU revokes my acceptance? Iâll never make it into Seoul Symphony Orchestra now. What if they investigate Yeonjun and Kai because of Beomgyu and Yeonjun gets outed too? Oh my god, Soobin would never speak to me againâŠ
He felt like he was going to be sick. Heâd didnât sleep at all, and he hadnât been able to pull himself together enough to text Beomgyu like he said.
What if heâs embarrassed to be seen with me now? What if wants nothing to do with me? What if he tells everyone it was all my fault and I forced him and the whole school thinks Iâm a pervert?
Taehyun tried to take some deep breaths and calm himself down. He didnât really believe Beomgyu would betray him like that, not after how close theyâd gotten, but he didnât know what he should do either. There was no telling what might happen now that Mr. Kim knew their secret.
Still, despite all of his fears, Taehyunâs biggest worry was that Beomgyu wouldnât want to talk to him anymore after what happened. Just thinking about it was enough to break his heart.
He didnât even know what he was supposed to say. Hey, that kiss was amazing and I still like you but I also think dating would be a disaster because we may have accidentally ruined both of our futures and now Iâm scared of what would happen if weâre seen together. No, saying all that to Beomgyu didnât seem like a good idea at all.
He flopped down on his bed and grabbed his phone. He stared at the little bear emoji next to Beomgyuâs name for what felt like ages before he forced himself to tap it and type out a message. He could only say what heâd wanted to say as soon as Mr. Kim had discovered them.
Taehyun:
what are we going to do?Â
When Beomgyu responded, Taehyun was both relieved that he replied, but also disheartened by the message.Â
Beomgyu:
I donât know
Iâm so sorry taehyunnie T.T
Taehyun dropped his phone next to him and turned over to bury his head in his pillow.
This is what I get for falling for Choi Beomgyu.
If he took a second to put aside his fear of Mr. Kim letting out their secret and ruining their lives, he still found himself just wanting to be with Beomgyu. He really did like him, and he had liked kissing him, and he wanted to do it again. He wanted to go out with him for real and figure out what they were to each other now, but was that something he could do? Was that ever a possibility for them when Beomgyu was an idol?
There was only one person he knew who was queer and stupid enough to date an idol. Maybe it was time he stopped freaking out and actually asked for some advice.
He picked up his phone and texted Soobin.
Taehyun:
can i call you?
itâs an emergency
Barely a minute later, Taehyunâs phone rang with Soobinâs name on the screen. Taehyun picked it up immediately.
âOkay, what happened?â Soobin asked, sounding concerned.
Taehyun groaned. âI really messed up, Soobin. Beomgyu and I kissed.â
âWhatâs so bad about that?â Soobin asked, sounding confused. âI thought you liked him?â
âNo, listen,â Taehyun insisted. âMr. Kim caught us. He saw everything.â
Soobin let out a long breath.
âOkay, donât panic yet. Itâs possible Mr. Kim hasnât even told anyone yet. Heâs not stupid. Iâm sure he knows what a huge risk it would be for Beomgyu to be outed, and I really donât believe heâd do that to one of his students. Heâs always been really good to you too. I doubt heâd just go around telling everyone that youâre gay.â
Taehyunâs breathing slowed a little. What Soobin was saying made sense. When he thought about it rationally, he didnât believe Mr. Kim would do anything that might hurt his students either. Still, he worried.
âI know youâre right, but Iâm still scared. What do you think I should do?â
âI think you should talk to Mr. Kim,â Soobin said. âTell him youâre not ready to come out, and you donât want to risk Beomgyuâs career. I think heâll absolutely keep it to himself if you just explain the situation and tell him youâre worried.â
Taehyun nodded to himself as Soobin spoke. He never knew Mr. Kim to be unreasonable or unkind. He thought Soobin was probably right, and talking to his teacher would do a lot to ease his fears.
âBut what about Beomgyu?â Taehyun asked quietly. âI donât know how to talk to him now.â
âWell, you should probably bring him with you when you talk to Mr. Kim. He deserves a chance to defend himself too. As for everything elseâŠI donât know. What do you want to happen?â
âI donât know. I like him, but Iâm terrified.â
âI think thatâs the next thing you have to figure out,â Soobin said gently. âWhen I started dating Yeonjun, we talked about the risks. We both decided we cared about each other enough for it to be worth trying to be together anyway, even if it had to be secret. I think you have to decide whether you want to be with Beomgyu despite everything that comes with it, and find out how he feels now too.â
âYeah,â Taehyun said softly. âI think youâre right. Everything happened so fast. I havenât really processed it all.â
âYou donât have to decide now. Talk to Mr. Kim, and if you feel better about everything after, maybe youâll see things differently.â
âThanks, Soobin. Talking about this helps a lot."
âOf course. No matter what happens, Iâll be here for you.â
Taehyun thanked Soobin for his help one last time, then said goodbye. After he hung up, he sat for a while contemplating everything Soobin had said.
It seemed like the best thing to do was talk to Mr. Kim as soon as possible. The sooner he and Beomgyu explained themselves and asked for secrecy, the sooner he could stop panicking.
He texted Beomgyu and relayed Soobinâs advice to him, then asked if heâd want to come with him to talk to Mr. Kim on Monday. Beomgyu agreed, and the two planned to speak to Mr. Kim after school on Monday. Until then, all Taehyun could do was wait and consider what Soobin said about deciding where he wanted things to go with Beomgyu next.
***
When Monday finally came, the whole day was agony. Taehyun and Beomgyu barely interacted with each other beyond little waves from across the room and tentative smiles. It wasnât like Taehyun didnât want to talk to him and be near him; it was that he was terrified of drawing peopleâs attention by doing anything that could be interpreted as not-platonic.
Even Minji noticed the tension. At lunch, when the two of them sat in the library and Beomgyu waved awkwardly at Taehyun from across the room, she gave Taehyun a questioning look.
Taehyun shook his head and said, âDonât ask,â to which Minji shrugged and let it go for the moment. He planned to tell her what was going on eventually, but he was too scared to say a word where people could overhear them and knew heâd be too anxious to explain until heâd talked to Mr. Kim.
When they reached the end of the day, Beomgyu followed Taehyun to his locker after their music theory class as usual. When they got to Taehyunâs locker, they spoke to each other in person for the first time since the night of the concert.
âHi,â Beomgyu said, a shy smile on his face.
Taehyun couldnât help returning his smile. Despite everything, he still felt warm just being near him.
           âHi,â he responded quietly.
âI guess we have a teacher to talk to,â Beomgyu offered, his smile faltering a bit. âDo you still want to go find Mr. Kim?â
Taehyun sighed and shifted on his feet nervously.
âI think we have to,â he said, âbut Iâm really not hyped about it.â
Beomgyu glanced around quickly and risked reaching out to squeeze Taehyunâs hand.
âItâll be okay. Definitely embarrassing, but I think weâll both feel better after.â
Taehyun nodded and squeezed his hand back before letting go. Then, the two headed for the music rooms to look for Mr. Kim.
They found him the orchestra room bent over his desk. When they approached, Mr. Kim looked up and seemed to startle at the sight of students seeking him out after school hours.
âTaehyun. Beomgyu,â he said, glancing between them. âWhat can I do for you?â
Taehyunâs heartbeat picked up. He and Beomgyu looked at each other. Beomgyu gave him a slight nod, and Taehyun took a deep breath.
âWe, um,â Taehyun started, âWe wanted to talk to you aboutâŠabout what you saw on Friday after the concert. Iâm really sorry about that, but we wanted to ask if you could please keep it secret for us? Itâs just, if people knewâŠâ
Taehyun found himself trailing off, and he looked desperately at Beomgyu for help. Beomgyu clenched his fists, but he continued for Taehyun.
âIf it got out that I liked boys, it could ruin my reputation as an idol, and Blue Hour would probably have to disband. Maybe one day Iâd be willing to tell the public the truth, but I canât risk Kai and Yeonjunâs careers too.â
Mr. Kim listened, his eyes thoughtful. The fact that he didnât look completely disgusted or angry was encouraging to Taehyun.
âAnd for me,â Taehyun added, âIâm justâŠIâm not ready to come out yet. I donât want people at SU to treat me differently right from the start or to not be considered for opportunities because of one part of my identity. I want to audition for Seoul Symphony Orchestra some day and I donât want to ruin my odds before I even have a chance to try.â
âPlease donât tell anyone, sir,â Beomgyu pleaded. âItâd mean a lot to us.â
As Taehyun and Beomgyu waited anxiously for a response, Mr. Kim got up and came around to stand in front of his desk so he could look them in the eye.
âI assure you, spreading gossip about my studentsâ love lives is not on my list of preferred activities,â Mr. Kim said sincerely. âYour secret is safe with me.â
Taehyun let out breath and felt his shoulders relax in relief. Beside him, Beomgyu unclenched his fists.
âIf I may ease your minds a little bit more,â Mr. Kim continued, âIâd encourage you to have a bit more faith in yourselves, and in the world. Taehyun, when and if you choose to come out is your choice, and itâs not one Iâd take away from you by spreading ugly rumours. You are a brilliant student and a talented violin player, and who you love will never take that away. Anyone who believes differently isnât worthy of your time or respect. However, music is a career in the arts, which has always been a path thatâs drawn those that may not fit in elsewhere. I think youâll find you might be in good company in the universityâs music program. Itâs very likely you wonât be alone in the way you feel, and I hope youâll become more confident for it.â
Taehyunâs chest felt tight at his teacherâs kind words, a well of emotion rising up inside him. He listened carefully as Mr. Kim turned to Beomgyu and continued.
âBeomgyu, I know our society can be very unkind to idols with preferences like yours, so I do believe youâll need to be more careful if you donât wish for that information to become public. Iâd like to hope that some day, if you did decide to come out, youâd find more fans than youâd expect to stay by your side and support you, but that risk is yours to take. In any case, I want you to know you have nothing to be ashamed of, and if you do choose to keep your orientation and personal life private, I hope you will still be proud of who you are.â
Beomgyu nodded, his eyes glistening. âThank you, sir. It really helps to hear you say that.â
âYeah, thank you so much, Mr. Kim,â Taehyun added. âIt means a lot to hear that, especially from you.â
Mr. Kim gave them a warm smile.
âYou boys can always come to me if you need anyone to talk to or if you need support. I try to be here for my students as much as I can. That being said, Iâd rather not see my students sticking their tongues in each otherâs mouths on school property â or ever â so please donât let it happen again.â
           Taehyun flushed and nodded repeatedly.
âRight, of course,â Taehyun stammered. âAgain, weâre really, really sorry about that.â
âFor sure,â Beomgyu added hurriedly. âItâll never happen again.â
âGood,â Mr. Kim said. âNow run along. I think weâve all spent far too much time lingering around this school after hours after all those months of rehearsals. Go enjoy your time.â
The boys thanked Mr. Kim one last time, then headed out of the classroom. As they walked, Beomgyu spoke up again.
âThat went a lot better than I thought it would,â he said. âMr. Kim is really cool.â
Taehyun nodded. âI really thought heâd be more mad about the music closet. I think we got lucky that it was him and not a different teacher that caught us.â
           âAbsolutely,â Beomgyu agreed.
They kept walking towards the front doors of the school, but when they got close, Beomgyu stopped walking and pulled on Taehyunâs sleeve. Taehyun stopped to look at him, and found him looking at him a bit bashfully.
âNow that thatâs over, I wanted to ask you about us,â Beomgyu started quietly. âYou know I like you, and it seems like you like me too. Do you maybeâŠwant to be together? Like, officially?â
Taehyunâs heart skipped, and it was like someone had suddenly dropped a brick on his chest. It felt like a swarm of angry wasps had replaced the butterflies in his stomach, and he couldnât think clearly.
âIâIâm not sure,â he stammered. âI know everything should be okay now, but Iâm still scared. It just seems like it could end up hurting both of us. Can you give me some time to think about it?â
Beomgyu deflated, the hope on his face fading. âRight. Yeah, I can do that.â
Taehyun nodded. âThanks. I justâŠI think I need some space for a bit. Everything just happened so fast.â
âOkay,â Beomgyu said, and it hurt to hear the sadness in his voice. âJustâŠJust let me know either way. Iâm sorry I put us into this situation.â
           Taehyun shook his head furiously.
âNo, it wasnât your fault,â Taehyun insisted. âThings are just complicated, and it sucks. I just need some time to really process it all.â
âI understand,â Beomgyu sighed. âIâll give you some space. Iâll be here whenever youâre ready to talk.â
Beomgyu reached out to give Taehyunâs hand one last, quick squeeze, then headed out the front doors of the school. Taehyun was left alone in the front hall, feeling like a Beomgyu shaped hole had just opened where his heart should be.Â

Part 10: You're Everything
Ms. Sato wandered through the classroom handing back the latest round of music theory tests. When she reached Taehyun, she paused for a moment and smiled as she set his marked test on his desk.
âExcellent work this time, Taehyun,â she said. âI can tell youâve really been working hard.â
The teacher continued on her way, and Taehyun eagerly picked up his test to see his mark. When he saw it, he beamed. A perfect score â and it was all thanks to Beomgyuâs help. He couldnât wait to tell him.
At the end of class, Taehyun hurried to gather his things and meet Beomgyu at the door, where he stood waiting. Ever since Taehyunâs audition, Beomgyu had taken to walking Taehyun to his locker every day after theory while Kai went on ahead, which Taehyun kept telling himself was a sign of his growing friendship with Beomgyu and not worth reading into. Never mind the way Beomgyu smiled at him when he came to meet him. Despite his growing feelings, he was still far too afraid to figure out what to do about them.
âYou look happy,â Beomgyu said as they started down the hall. âDoes that mean you got a good mark on the test? I heard Ms. Sato say you did well.â
âI did!â Taehyun said, beaming at him. âA perfect score. Itâs the best mark Iâve gotten in this class all semester.â
They stopped in front of Taehyunâs locker. Taehyun opened it to gather his things for rehearsal, and Beomgyu grinned.
âI knew you could do it,â Beomgyu said fondly. âYouâre one of the smartest people I know.â
Taehyun met Beomgyuâs eyes and rubbed the back of his neck shyly, feeling a tinge of heat in his ears.
âI wouldnât say that. Itâs because I had such a great tutor.â
Beomgyu took a step closer, and Taehyun thought he saw a dusting of pink rising in his cheeks. Beomgyu reached up and brushed Taehyunâs bangs off his face.
âMaybe youâre just easy to teach.â
Taehyun grinned and felt his heart turn to butterflies. The heat in his ears spread across his whole face, all too aware of how close he and Beomgyu were standing. He barely had time to register what was happening when Beomgyu started to lean in, his eyelids fluttering closedâ
âHey guys!â Kai said cheerfully. âReady for rehearsal?â
Taehyun startled and practically jumped away from Beomgyu, who was staring at him wide-eyed. It took him a moment to come back to himself before he turned to look at Kai who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
âYeah, I think weâre ready,â Taehyun said slowly.
Beomgyu nodded and gave him a weak smile, and Taehyun closed his locker to head down the hall with his friends. He kept glancing at Beomgyu out of the corner of his eye, but the other boy was talking with Kai. His mind was reeling.
Had Beomgyu been about to kiss him?
***
Beomgyuâs plan was going terribly.
It was supposed to be so simple. All he had to do was find some way to be alone with Taehyun so he could kiss him. Then Taehyun would know how he felt for sure, and Beomgyu would find out if Taehyun liked him back.
It turned out that getting Taehyun alone at school was next to impossible, and he was so busy with Blue Hour schedules that asking him to meet up another time was basically out of the question. The concert was only two weeks away, and Taehyun had been spending as much of his lunch breaks as possible working on his solo with Mr. Kim, so their library theory sessions had basically come to an abrupt halt.
Beomgyu spent far too much time thinking about how to convince Taehyun to join him in the library again, but as always, Taehyun was too focused on his music to be swayed by any of his suggestions.
To Beomgyu's good fortune, opportunity struck when Taehyun was forced to spend lunch in the library gathering research for a history project, and Beomgyu was all too eager to volunteer to help him look for books. Heâd get Taehyun alone in the stacks, and then heâd have his chance.
When lunchtime finally came, he wandered between the shelves following Taehyun as he searched for books to use for his project. He tried to seem nonchalant, but he was hyperaware of everything happening around him and kept note of every section of the stacks that hid them from view of the rest of the library.
Taehyun eventually stopped his wandering in front of the history section, and Beomgyu leaned against the shelves while Taehyun scanned the books for what he was looking for.
âSo whatâs your paper on anyway?â Beomgyu asked casually. âI can help you look way better if I know what youâre working on.â
Taehyun glanced at Beomgyu briefly, then turned his attention back to the shelf he was examining.
âIâm writing my essay on the influence of Korean composers in the 20th century,â Taehyun murmured. âItâs okay though; you donât have to help me look. Iâm not sure Iâm going to find anything I can use here anyway.â
âNo really, I want to,â Beomgyu insisted, pushing himself off the shelf to stand next to Taehyun. âIâll help you search for anything on music history.â
Taehyun gave him a small smile, and Beomgyuâs chest tightened.
âThanks,â Taehyun said warmly. âI guess it couldnât hurt.â
The two continued scanning the history section for moment before Taehyun straightened and looked up. Something on the top shelf had caught his eye, and he reached for it. Even standing on tiptoes, his fingers just brushed the bookâs spine, and he couldnât quite reach it.
Beomgyu chuckled. âLooks like youâre too short, Taehyunnie.â
Taehyun shot him a glare, but it was playful. âWho are you calling short? Weâre like the same height.â
Beomgyu stuck his tongue out at him. âIâm a good inch taller, thank you very much. Let me show you how itâs done.â
With that, Beomgyu reached up towards the book Taehyun had his eye on. Like Taehyun, he was only just able to catch it with his fingertips, but he was so determined to show off that he tried to slide it out anyway, and it came toppling down his head, bringing the book that had been shelved beside it with it.
Immediately, Taehyun and Beomgyu knelt to the ground after the fallen books.
Beomgyu sighed. âWell, at least I got it down.â
Taehyun grabbed one of the books while Beomgyu grabbed the other.
âItâs okay,â Taehyun giggled. âIt was cute watching you try.â
Beomgyu pouted, but it faded when he noticed how Taehyun was looking at him, his large eyes crinkled into a bright smile.
âNot as cute as you,â he breathed.
After a quick glance around, Beomgyu put a hand on the ground and started leaning towards Taehyun, who seemed to be angling closer too. He could just feel Taehyunâs breath tickle his face as they leaned towards each other.
Beomgyuâs heart sped up in anticipation, his eyes just about to flutter shut.
            This is my chance â
âHey Taehyun! Hey Beomgyu! What are you guys doing on the floor?â
Beomgyu jumped at Minjiâs voice. He smacked the side of his head on the bookshelf as he scrambled to stand up.
Taehyun got to his feet much more calmly, the book he wanted in his hand.
âBeomgyu was just helping me look for books for my history paper.â
Beomgyu nodded, dumbstuck. Minji glanced between the two of them and rolled her eyes.
âThat sounds boring even for you, Taehyun,â Minji teased. âKai and I finished our project early so I thought we could actually hang out on lunch for once. Want to come join me?â
Taehyun nodded and shot Beomgyu an apologetic smile. âHonestly, I could use a break for the day. Iâm sure youâd rather go hang out with Kai too than help me with research.â
Beomgyu pushed down his disappointment and forced himself to nod. âSure, you two go ahead. Iâm sure Iâll find Kai around somewhere.â
Once Taehyun had left, Beomgyu groaned in frustration. Maybe that kiss just wasnât meant to be.
***
On the morning of the concert, Minji and Taehyun were standing by Taehyunâs locker before their first classes when both of their phones buzzed at the same time. The two looked at each other, and Minji reached for her phone first.
âItâs an email,â she said shakily. âSU. Check your phone.â
Taehyunâs eyes widened and he scrambled to pull his phone out of is pocket. He unlocked it and opened his email. Sure enough, there was an email from SU sitting in his inbox.
âSubject: Application Results â Faculty of Music,â Taehyun read aloud, his heart hammering in his chest. âI canât look. You open yours first.â
âCoward,â Minji teased, but her voice was weak. âLetâs do it together.â
Taehyun nodded, and Minji took a few deep breaths before she started to count down.
           âOkay, on three. OneâŠTwoâŠThree!â
Taehyun closed his eyes and tapped the email, then opened them slowly to read the first line.
Dear Mr. Kang, On behalf of the Faculty of Mucic, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into the Performance major at Seoul UniversityâŠ
Taehyun looked up. When he met Minjiâs eyes, they broke out into wide smiles.
           âAccepted?â Minji asked tentatively.
âAccepted!â Taehyun exclaimed, and he jumped forward to hug her.
âOh my god. We did it. Weâre going to SU!â
Taehyun couldnât stop smiling. âI canât believe it. I canât wait to tell everyone. I have to tell my parents, and Soobin, and Mr. Kim, and BeomgyuâŠâ
âDefinitely,â Minji said. âThis is the best day ever. I canât even be nervous for the concert now.â
Taehyun nodded. All of his hard work had finally paid off, and he was going to be riding on the high of success for the rest of the day. He had to tell Beomgyu.
***
The hours leading up to the concert were a whirlwind. Taehyun had his regular classes in the morning, but the afternoon was spent doing one last run through of the entire concert from beginning to end, solos and all. Between helping get the auditorium set up and having to stay in position during rehearsal, he barely had a chance to wave at Beomgyu from across the stage, let alone talk to him.
It seemed like they kept missing each other in their scramble to get everything together for the nightâs performance. There was no way Taehyun was going to have a chance to talk to him before the show, so he broke down and texted him during a short break in rehearsal.
Taehyun: can you meet me after the concert tonight? i have big news
Beomgyu: Sure iâll find u ;D
Taehyunâs heart fluttered at the response. He couldnât wait to tell Beomgyu and thank him again for all his help with his audition. He had to admit it to himself â he was so happy Beomgyu inserted himself into his life the way he did. Now, he couldnât imagine his life without him in it.
***
That evening, hundreds of people filed into Gangnam Academyâs auditorium. People from all over Seoul had bought tickets to donate to the schoolâs fundraiser and support the students performing. Parents, friends, alumni, and even some prominent figures in the cityâs music community filled the seats until they had a full house. Yeonjun had come with Blue Hourâs entire management team to watch Kai and Beomgyu, and Soobin tagged along with Minji and Taehyunâs families.
Backstage, all the students were gathered in the wings waiting for Mr. Kimâs signal that it was time to take their places on stage. Taehyun clutched his bow and violin tightly in his hands while Minji bounced on her heels restlessly next to him. Beyond the stage curtain, they could hear the hum of the audience as they filed into the auditorium and settled into their seats.
Suddenly, the room fell into silence, and Mr. Kim gestured for the performers to file out onto the stage and take their places. Taehyun came to his place at first chair and took deep breaths. On the other side of the stage, the vocal students stepped onto their risers, and Beomgyu gave him a small nod and a smile.
Then, the curtain rose, and the stage lights shone down on the students. Mr. Kim walked across the front of the stage to his place as the conductor, then turned to address the audience.
âGood evening, everyone,â Mr. Kimâs voice boomed. âWelcome to Gangnam Academyâs annual benefit concert. Thanks to your ticket purchases and generous donations, we have raised more than ever before to help support underfunded schools in Seoul.
âThe senior students you see before you have spent the past semester diligently preparing to perform for you. Iâm proud of all their hard work, and I hope you will come to appreciate their talents as much as I do by the end of the night.
âWithout further ado, I present to you Gagnam Academyâs graduating music class!â
The audience applauded, and Mr. Kim turned to face the orchestra. He raised his conductorâs wand. There was a breath, Mr. Kim gave a quiet count, and the students began to play.
The concert went by almost in a blur after that. Taehyun was so focused on the pieces he was playing that he hardly noticed the time passing. When it was time for his solo, Mr. Kim introduced him and the piece he was going to play, and he stood and bowed to the audience. His heart hammered in his chest while he played, but heâd practiced so much that everything around him seemed to fall away until it was just him and his violin.
When he finished his last note, he let out a sigh of relief and bowed to the audience again, who rewarded him with generous applause. As he sat down, he looked across the stage to see Beomgyu give him a thumbs up, and he smiled back at him widely.
Beomgyuâs solo, of course, went flawlessly. Taehyun couldnât help but be captivated as he sang. He had a good voice, but he was expressive and charismatic as a performer, which is what really held peopleâs attention. He seemed to light up on stage in a way that Taehyun had never seen in him before, the spotlight glinting off his hair and brightening his eyes and his smile. He was mesmerizing, and Taehyun could see why he was so beloved as and idol.
Beomgyu bowed deeply at the end of his song, and the audienceâs applause was thunderous. Taehyun thought he heard Yeonjun cheering, and he smiled a little to himself. Beomgyu caught Taehyunâs eye on the way back to the risers, and Taehyun returned his thumbs up. Beomgyu winked at him in return, and Taehyun felt his cheeks heat up as he raised his violin for the next song.
The rest of the concert flew by without a hitch. At the end of the last song, Mr. Kim bowed, then gestured for the orchestra to stand up and take their own bows. The audience rose to their feet in a standing ovation, and Taehyun beamed. Everything had gone even better than heâd hoped. All of his hard work had been worth it.
***
Once Taehyun had returned his violin to its case, he hurried off through the halls looking for Beomgyu. He wove through groups of students and their families until he spotted Beomgyu by the backstage door. He called out his name, and Beomgyu hurried over to him, an excited smile on his face.
âYou were amazing!â Beomgyu exclaimed. âYou solo was so cool. You did so well, Taehyunnie.â
Taehyunâs heart skipped, and he smiled shyly. âSo did you. You have a really great voice.â
Beomgyu puffed out his chest proudly. âWhat can I say? I was born for the stage.â
Taehyun laughed at that, then Beomgyu turned thoughtful.
âSo what did you want to tell me?â Beomgyu asked.
âOh right,â Taehyun started, a huge smile spreading across his face. âI got accepted into SU! The email came this morning.â
Beomgyu gasped. âNo way, thatâs amazing! Youâre such a great player though, I knew you could do it!â
âThanks so much,â Taehyun said sincerely. âBut I have to give you some credit too. Youâve been so supportive. You really helped me a lot.â
âNo, it really wasnât that much. Youâre the great violin player.â
Beomgyu looked away before he continued, a touch of pink blooming on his cheeks.
âActually, I umâŠI have something to tell you too.â
Taehyun nodded and looked at him expectantly, but before Beomgyu could continue, Yeonjun and Kaiâs voices cut through the chatter around them, calling for Beomgyu.
           âNot now,â Beomgyu muttered.
Taehyun looked at him questioningly, and Beomgyu grabbed his hand and started to pull him down the crowded hallway. They wove past the other students and Beomgyu was looking around frantically, as if searching for somewhere to hide.
At that moment, Taehyun spotted the music closet and gestured towards it.
âLetâs go in there,â Taehyun told Beomgyu. âItâs never locked anyway.â
Beomgyu nodded and darted across the hall. Still holding onto his hand, Beomgyu pulled Taehyun into the music closet. They shut the door quickly, suppressing giggles when they heard Kai and Yeonjun walk by, calling out for Beomgyu.
Beomgyu turned to face Taehyun, grinning mischievously.
âShouldnât you be getting back to the company instead of hiding in here with me?â Taehyun asked, laughing.
âThey can wait for a few more minutes,â Beomgyu said, taking a step closer.
Suddenly, Taehyun could feel the heat rising up in his cheeks. He was backed up against a shelf full of spare rosin and sheet music. Beomgyuâs gaze was setting him on fire, and there was nowhere for him to run even he wanted to.
Beomgyu hooked his fingers into Taehyunâs belt loops and pulled him closer, so close that their chests were almost touching. Taehyunâs eyes searched Beomgyuâs face, frozen, his heart racing.
âSo, um, what did you want to tell me?â Taehyun said shakily.
âAre you nervous to find out, Taehyunnie?â Beomgyu whispered.
           Taehyunâs breath caught. âMaybe.â
Beomgyu gave him a small smile. âMe too.â
The older boy leaned forward and their lips met, sending all of Taehyunâs senses into overdrive. He kissed Beomgyu back, hands reaching up around his neck to pull him closer, to show him how much he wanted this. Beomgyu hummed, and Taehyun could feel his smile against his lips for a second before they were kissing again. Taehyunâs world dissolved into a blur of soft lips and gentle touches, his heart throwing itself against his ribcage, his skin burning as Beomgyuâs hands crept up his back and pulled him even closer, their hips touching.
âYouâre everything, Taehyunnie,â Beomgyu murmured, brushing Taehyunâs hair off his face. âI really like you. Please tell me you want to be with me too.â
âKiss me again and itâs a promise,â Taehyun answered.
And Beomgyu did, kissing him softly and deeply, less hungry this time. Taehyun could feel every memory from the past few months in that kiss, and knew that this boy here with him wasnât just the confident, handsome idol he saw in videos, but also the sweet vocalist from school â the boy who had watched the sunset with him and told him that he was afraid of his feelings for boys, who had melted Taehyunâs heart with his kindness.
Taehyun never wanted to stop kissing him, never wanted to let go.
That was when they heard the door to the closet open, sending the two of them flying apart in panic. Mr. Kim stood in the doorway holding a box of mics and other audio equipment, his eyes wide open with shock.

Part 2

Part 2: Sugar Rush Ride
The most beautiful island Taehyun had ever seen came into view beneath him. It was shaped roughly like a crescent moon and surrounded by a glittering, cerulean sea. The island was lined with beaches of fine white sand and covered in lush greenery. To the west, the dense tropical forest gave way to tall mountains that reached for the sky.
Taehyun could feel the warm sun on his face, and a light breeze swirled around him as he and Beomgyu descended toward the island. Beomgyu brought them down over the water, and Taehyun reached his free hand down to skim the waves with his fingertips. The water was warm.
They approached more quickly, then, until they reached the beach and Beomgyu brought them down onto the soft sand. Taehyun wobbled on his feet at first, a bit shaky from flying, and Beomgyu reached out to steady him. Once Taehyun had his feet firmly on the ground and was standing upright, Beomgyu finally unlaced their fingers and dropped his hand.
Taehyun raised a hand to his face to shield his eyes from the bright sun as he took in his surroundings. His mouth hung open in awe.
Directly in front of him was the dazzling sea he and Beomgyu had flown over, the waves extending into infinity. He turned, and behind him and to his left was dense, full foliage. The colours of the forest seemed impossibly rich, the leaves and vines the most vivid shades of green. To his right, the beach stretched down the side of the island, eventually ending in mountains that were tall and imposing but worn rounded at the top, eroded into sheer cliffs where they met the water below. Sitting on the sea just below the mountains, there was a small sailboat, a black flag flying from its mast.
Taehyun turned back to look at Beomgyu, who had been watching him thoughtfully.
âThis place is so beautiful.â
Beomgyu smiled warmly. Taehyun thought that in this setting, the beauty of the other boy seemed more natural, as if Beomgyu was just another feature of the island.
âIâm glad you like it,â Beomgyu said. âItâs not every day that I get to show my home to such a lovely boy.â
Home.
Suddenly, the weight of what heâd done crashed down on Taehyun. Images flashed in his mind. His sister and the wedding preparations. His parentsâ faces and how heartbroken theyâd be if they discovered he was gone. His university preparations. His friends. He had responsibilities, and heâd just let a gorgeous boy talk him into being whisked away like it was nothing. His knees buckled, and he fell forward, digging his fingers into the white sand.
âBeomgyu, I canât do this,â Taehyun said, his voice rising in panic. âI shouldnât be here. You have to take me back.â
Beomgyu frowned and crouched down so his face was on level with Taehyunâs.
âBut why?â he asked innocently.
Taehyun shut his eyes tightly, fighting back tears. âI have a life and things I have to do. My sister needs me, and my parents are going to be so worried when they find out Iâm gone. I canât just leave them and go on some insane adventure with you.â
âShh, gorgeous. Theyâll never even know youâre gone.â
Taehyun opened his eyes. âWhat do you mean?â
Beomgyu reached out and gently lifted Taehyunâs chin so that they were eye to eye. âI told you; this is Neverland. Time stopped for you the moment you jumped off that windowsill with me. When you go back, itâll be like no time passed at all. Besides, I wouldnât have been able to bring you with me if it wasnât what you wanted. The magic doesnât work that way. There must be something in your life that made you want to escape.â
Taehyun considered this for a moment. He didnât feel ready to deal with Mr. Park and his bullshit for an entire summer, or face saying goodbye to his precious friends. Even though he loved his sister and his parents dearly and didnât want to let them down, the pressure was stifling. It was true, he had wanted it all to stop for a while. What was the harm in justâŠputting it all on hold, if only for a bit? And there was Beomgyu, who was so mesmerizingly beautiful and whose touch set off fireworks in his soul.
âWellâŠI guess it canât hurt to stay for a little while.â
Beomgyu grinned and rose to his feet. âLetâs go then! Thereâs so much I want to show you.â
Taehyun nodded and stood up. Beomgyu reached to take his hand, but just as he was about to take it, he pulled away.
âIâm sorry,â he said shyly. âCan we justâŠI mean, we just met, and Iâm not usually the type of person who would kiss someone they donât even know. I shouldnât have done it.â
Beomgyu laughed. âDonât worry about it. I asked you to kiss me, didnât I? I wanted to. And not just because of the magic. We can do this however you want to.â
âOh,â Taehyun muttered, his cheeks turning a bit pink. âOkay then.â
âCome on,â Beomgyu said. âLet me show you my home.â
Beomgyu led Taehyun down a narrow path through the forest. It was overgrown and strewn with roots and vines, but that made the walk even more enchantingâlike the whole island was a secret Beomgyu was sharing with him.
Along with the green of the trees were the vivid pinks, oranges, and reds of flowers that dotted the trees and bloomed from bushes. Dappled light from the sun filtered down through the trees, making the colours appear even brighter.
The two walked for a while, deeper and deeper into the forest until they reached a small stream. The water was perfectly transparent, pure as crystal. A makeshift bridge made of four planks tied together with rope was laid across the water. On the other side, a massive willow tree grew. It was two stories high, with a trunk as wide as Taehyun was tall. Its branches were so expansive that they covered the whole area like a great umbrella, making the area feel almost enclosed from the rest of the forest.
Beomgyu crossed over the bridge and gestured for Taehyun to follow, holding some of the dangling branches aside for him. Tentatively, Taehyun crossed and ducked under the branches so he was sheltered beneath the tree. He followed Beomgyu to the base of the trunk and noticed a small wooden door that barely reached his knees. It had a wrought iron handle with a keyhole.
As Taehyun wondered how anyone could fit through, Beomgyu crouched down and fiddled with his necklaces until he found one with two keys on the end. He turned the key in the lock and pulled the door open, revealing a three-foot drop on the other side.
Beomgyu turned to look back at Taehyun. âThis is where I live. Just follow me.â
Before Taehyun had a chance to reply, Beomgyu slid feet-first into the hole. The space inside was tall enough for Beomgyu to stand fully. Then, he turned and looked back at Taehyun, who quickly slid in after him.
Taehyun found himself on a small landing beneath the tree. The whole space seemed to be built of the ground itself, the walls and floor made of tightly packed earth. In front of him, he could see a staircase that curved down around a corner and disappeared, though there seemed to be a soft glow cast on them from whatever was below. He looked at Beomgyu curiously, and the other boy stepped around him to pull the door closed, then headed down the stairs.
Taehyun followed him down the steps and around the corner. When they reached the bottom, Taehyun discovered that the light had been coming from old fashioned oil lamps set into alcoves in the walls. Beomgyu had led him into a large underground room that was warm and inviting. They were in a small kitchen area, with rustic wooden cupboards and a black, wood-burning stove. Pots and pans hung down over the counter.
Just beyond the kitchen was a large wooden table with bench seats. It looked big enough to seat six people, and the marks and scratches on the surface suggested that it was well-used.
âWhat do you think?â Beomgyu asked.
Taehyun turned to smile at him. âItâs cozy.â
The other boy nodded. He seemed thoughtful for a moment before he spoke again.
âHow about I show you your room?â
Taehyun agreed and followed Beomgyu to a rounded door on the left side of the main chamber. Beomgyu pulled it open and stepped aside, gesturing for Taehyun to go in and take a look.
Inside, there were two bunk beds along the back wall and one single bed set into the left corner next to the door. Only the single bed was made, with simple white sheets, a single pillow, and a quilt with a green and brown checked pattern. To the right, there was a large wardrobe.
Five beds in totalâŠA question was starting to form in Taehyunâs mind as he looked over the room, but it vanished when Beomgyu spoke.
âThe single bedâs the most comfortable, but you could always take a top bunk if you really want to.â
Taehyun gave the bed another look, then turned to face Beomgyu. âI think this one will be fine.â
âOf course, you could always sleep with me in my room instead if youâd prefer, tooâ Beomgyu drawled, wiggling his eyebrows.
Taehyun rolled his eyes, but he smirked anyway. âYou wish.â
Beomgyu winked at him. âMaybe I do.â
Taehyunâs heart skipped, and he looked away.
âSo, um, itâs the middle of the day out there. Weâre not going to sleep now, are we?â
Beomgyu giggled. âOf course not. I just wanted to show you that I have a place for you.â
Taehyunâs cheeks warmed. Was he planning on kidnapping me like he did? How long has been thinking about this?
He pushed those questions away and instead asked, âWhat do we do now then?â
âNow, we have fun.
Taehyun soon found himself back in the forest just outside the shelter of Beomgyuâs willow tree. Beomgyu had started leading him down a path through the forest, but stopped and was now glancing up at the trees around him. Taehyun followed his gaze and noticed they had stopped under a break in the branches, giving him a clear view of the sky above him.
âWhere are we going?â Taehyun asked.
Beomgyu looked at him, the excitement plain on his face.
âI want to show you everything in Neverland, but since I canât do it all at once, Iâm going to show you the best view of the island from the top of the tallest mountain.â
Beomgyu pointed, and Taehyun looked up between the trees to see one of the mountain peaks rising up in the distance.
âWeâre not going to hike all the way there, are we?â Taehyun asked in disbelief.
âNo, silly,â Beomgyu laughed. âWeâre going to fly, of course.â
âOh,â Taehyun muttered. âRight. We can do that.â
Beomgyuâs smile turned mischievous. âWell, my magicâs only good for one flight per kiss, so Iâm just going to have to carry you this time. Take my hand.â
Beomgyu took a step closer to Taehyun and reached out his hand. Taehyun regarded it with a bit of suspicion, wondering what Beomgyu was up to, but he reached out to take it anyway. As soon as his fingers wrapped around Beomgyuâs, Beomgyu pulled Taehyun into his chest and wrapped his free arm tightly around his waist.
âHold on tight, gorgeous,â Beomgyu whispered.
Taehyunâs entire face was burning. He barely had the chance to process that Beomgyuâs bare chest was flush against him where his cardigan fell open before they were rising into the air.
Taehyun clung to Beomgyu as they rose up above the trees, his face tucked tight against Beomgyuâs neck. The other boyâs grip was strong and firm around him, and after a minute, he felt brave enough to look up. He found Beomgyu was smirking at him, looking very pleased with himself as they flew.
The forest sped by beneath them, the trees a blur as they approached the mountain. Soon, they were rising more, and Taehyun caught glimpses of cliffs and a waterfall as they travelled upwards. Eventually, they reached the top, and Beomgyu set them down gently on a flat outcropping on the rocky peak.
Beomgyu untangled their arms, and Taehyun stepped away to look around. It was breezy at the top of the mountain, and a single tree cast a shadow over the narrow space of the outcropping. When he turned to look back the way they came, he could see the whole island before him. On the far side of the island, he could see the beach where he and Beomgyu had first landed. Closer to the base of the mountains, there was a turquoise lagoon. Between the trees of the forest, he caught glimpses of a river snaking across the whole island.
âI canât believe this place is real,â Taehyun said.
âIâm happy you like it so much,â Beomgyu replied, looking a bit wistful. âSince Iâm always here, I sometimes forget how beautiful it is. Itâs nice to see it through someone elseâs eyes.â
Taehyun frowned. He wanted to ask Beomgyu what he meant, but before he could, the other boy was walking to the edge of the outcropping to sit on the ledge. He let his legs dangle over the edge.
Beomgyu turned back and called Taehyun over. âCome, sit with me.â
Taehyun went to join him. He crossed his legs instead of letting them dangle, not nearly as confident about the sheer drop below him.
Beomgyu looked at him, his gaze serious.
âYou know, I meant it before when I said that the magic wouldnât let me take you unless you wanted to go,â Beomgyu said. âWhat made you want to leave?â
Taehyun looked out at the island below and sighed. âI donât know. It seems kind of stupid now that Iâm thinking about it.â
Beomgyu reached out to gently touch Taehyunâs knee, drawing Taehyunâs eyes back to him.
âNo oneâs reasons are stupid,â Beomgyu said. âEveryone wants to escape sometimes. You wouldnât be here with me if it was nothing.â
Taehyunâs heart clenched, and he looked away again.
âItâs justâŠHave you ever felt like everything was too much at once and you just wanted it to stop for a bit? Iâm supposed to be starting at university in the fall, and I know itâs going to be good for me and Iâve always wanted to go, but thereâs so much that has to change. My friends are all going to different schools, and Iâm even moving out. And my older sisterâs getting married and Iâm excited for her, but sheâs going to be living with her husband after and I wonât get to see her as much and Iâm just going to miss her a lot. Weâve always been really close.
âAnd then thereâs my stupid summer job. My boss is a total asshole and he expects me to just drop everything to do shit for him and it sucks because I need to save up for school but I could be spending the time with my friends before we all have to leave instead. And heâs never actually said anything to my face but I can just tell heâs going to be homophobic and I donât want to deal with his dumb comments.â
Taehyun took a breath and looked down at his hands.
âAndâŠSorry for rambling. Itâs just kind of a lot, I guess.â
âI donât blame you for being overwhelmed,â Beomgyu said softly. âIâll try to help you forget it all for a while. Like a vacation.â
Taehyun nodded. He felt a little bit lighter. Despite knowing nothing about him, it was comforting talking to Beomgyu.
He thought back to Beomgyuâs home in the tree and the glimpses of seriousness heâd seen in the other boy. He wondered if someone who lived in such a paradise could be sad.
âBeomgyu, can I ask you something?â
Beomgyu raised an eyebrow. âGo on.â
âBack at the willow tree, you have five extra beds and a table that fits six. It seems like other people used to be here. What happened to them?â
Beomgyu looked down and kicked his feet. âAh, you noticed that. Well, I guess since I kind of kidnapped you itâs only fair that I explain some things.
âI told you before that timeâs stopped here. That counts for me too. I donât age, and nothing changes here. And unless I bring someone here from the real world, Iâm alone, and I get lonely like anyone else.
âMy magic lets me know when someone wishes for time to stop, or to never grow up. I used to use that power to find people, and I could bring them to Neverland with me as long as they agreed to come. I wanted friends, so I kept bringing other kids here until there were five of us. And it was really fun! We called ourselves the Lost Boys and were like a family. I even used to sleep in the guest room with them, which is why there are five beds instead of four.â
Beomgyu took a shaky breath. He smiled sadly, then continued.
âBut they couldnât stay here. Eventually, they all had to leave, and I was alone again. It was too sad to have to say goodbye to them all, so I decided Iâd never bring anyone here again. I thought Iâd rather be alone than have to keep saying goodbye.â
Taehyun frowned. âBut you brought me here.â
Beomgyu looked at him, his eyes soft.
âYouâre special. In Neverland, Iâll live forever until this place stops existing. I feel like Iâve already experienced everything I wanted to, exceptâŠwell, except for falling in love.â
Taehyunâs breath caught. âWhat does that have to do with me?â
Beomgyu laughed. âIsnât it obvious? I swore the last person I brought here would be someone I thought Iâd fall in love with. Youâre that last person.â
Taehyun stared at him, wide-eyed. âWhat? Why did you choose me? You donât even know me.â
âI told you when I came to your room. I heard your wish, and it drew me to you. ButâŠI could also sense your soul, and it just felt so warmâŠso caring. I knew that whoever that soul was, I wouldnât be able to help falling in love with them. And I think I was right.â
Taehyun shook his head. âYou realize thatâs crazy, right? What if you get to know me and you donât even like me, or I donât love you back? And even if we did fall in love, what would we do? I canât stay here.â
Beomgyu reached out to take Taehyunâs hand and earnestly looked into his eyes.
âListen, I know. I know it doesnât make any sense, but youâve already been so open with me, and it doesnât hurt that youâre so handsome and lovely too. Do you think you could justâŠgive me a chance? If we try and it doesnât work, youâll go back to your life, and itâll be like nothing ever happened anyway.â
Taehyun knew Beomgyu had a point. And Beomgyu really was so mesmerizing. He was heartbreakingly lovely and temptingly mysterious, and he said the most beautiful things. The thought of leaving him without knowing anything more made him surprisingly sad, so he answered the only way he could.
âOkay. Letâs give this a chance.â
Beomgyu reached out to cup Taehyunâs face with his hand. Taehyun leaned into the touch, and Beomgyu gave him a light kiss on the cheek before he pulled away again.
âThank you,â he said.
***
The next morning, Taehyun awoke to the smell of pancakes.
For a moment, he was struck with panic. There was something heâd been working on that he was supposed to finish before he fell asleep, but he never did. SomethingâŠwhat was it? Wasnât it importantâsomething about university? Had he just dreamt it? He was also sure he must have overslept and grappled around for his phone to check the time, only to find empty air at the side of the bed where his nightstand should have been.
Then he opened his eyes and remembered where he was.
A soft glow spilled into the room from beneath the door, and Taehyun could just make out the shapes of the empty bunk beds in Beomgyuâs guest room. He could hear dishes clinking and soft humming, and Taehyun guessed that Beomgyuâs cooking must be the source of the delicious smell.
He stretched and rolled out of bed slowly, then walked to the door. He hesitated, his hand hovering over the doorknob, then opened it and stepped through.
He found Beomgyu scurrying around the kitchen. He piled fresh pancakes onto two plates and brought them to the table, which was already set for two with a bottle of syrup and a large bowl of fresh strawberries in the middle. Beomgyu was wearing a white apron, and Taehyunâs heart warmed at how endearing it was to see him fuss over the food.
Taehyun shut the bedroom door behind him, and the sound finally drew Beomgyuâs attention. When he saw Taehyun, he broke out in huge smile and ran to throw his arms around his neck. Taehyun couldnât help but hug him back.
âGood morning, gorgeous,â Beomgyu said brightly. âIâm so glad youâre up. I just finished making breakfast.â
Beomgyu pulled away from Taehyun and gestured for him to take a seat at the table. Taehyun obliged and slid onto one of the bench seats in front of a plateful of pancakes. He looked back at Beomgyu, wide-eyed.
âDid you do all this for me?â he asked.
Beomgyu smiled shyly and fiddled with his apron to untie it. âI just wanted to make you feel more at home. Do you like pancakes? I could always make something else if you donât.â
âNo,â Taehyun said quickly. âI love pancakes. Thank you so much.â
Beomgyu beamed at him and set his apron on the counter. Then, he joined Taehyun at the table and poured syrup over his own plate of pancakes. Taehyun felt a little awkward, still not sure how to act after their conversation on the mountain. He basically said he was going to try to fall in love with Beomgyu, but how was that even going to work? He was definitely attracted to the other boy, but love seemed like it should be a lot more than that. He had no idea what to say or what he should do. But he didnât have to worry. Beomgyu chattered on like nothing about the situation was unusual to him, and it helped Taehyun relax and enjoy his meal, which tasted even better than it looked. He told himself that for now, just getting to know him was a good start.
As he soaked up the syrup on his plate with one last piece of pancake, Taehyun finally spoke up.
âThat was incredible. How can you cook like this here? Where do you even get the ingredients?â
Beomgyu grinned, pleased at Taehyunâs interest.
âThe island always provides for me,â he explained. âWhatever I wish for appears in the cupboards, and there are some things that just grow right in the forest. I have everything I could ever need and more.
âJust be careful of any fruit you donât recognize,â he added mysteriously. âSome of it hasâŠside effects.â
Taehyun had several questions about that, but he decided he could live without knowing the answers. Instead, he helped Beomgyu clear the table and clean up.
âSo, what are we going to do today?â Taehyun asked as he helped dry the dishes that Beomgyu washed.
âI was thinking weâd go swimming with the mermaids,â Beomgyu said. âTheyâre a bitâŠWell, youâll see. But I still think you should meet them.â
Taehyun nodded. Heâd never seen a mermaid before, but this was Neverland, and it didnât seem surprising that this was the kind of place where mermaids could be real.
They finished cleaning up, and Beomgyu informed Taehyun that theyâd be heading out soon. Taehyun thought that he should probably get ready for the day when a realization struck him. He glanced down at his clothesâthe same T-shirt and shorts heâd been wearing since heâd left homeâand spoke up.
âUm, Beomgyu?â he started. âDo you think I could borrow some of your clothes? I really need to change, but I donât have anything else to wear.â
A wide grin crossed Beomgyuâs face, and it almost made Taehyun regret asking.
âNo problem, gorgeous. I have the perfect outfit for you.â
Taehyun watched as Beomgyu unlocked a door at the far end of the main room with one of the keys from his necklaces and disappeared behind it. He assumed that must be Beomgyuâs bedroom.
He waited for another moment before Beomgyu emerged again with a pile of clothes in his arms.
âHere, try these on,â Beomgyu said, passing them to Taehyun. âI think weâre about the same size, so they should fit.â
Taehyun took them and disappeared into his room to change. Beomgyu had given him a pair of light cargo shorts and a sleeveless denim vest. They both fit well, but Taehyun had to shake his head to himself as he put on the vest. It was clearly meant to be worn over a shirt, but of course, Beomgyu hadnât given him one.
He always has an agenda, doesnât he?
He did up the buttons to preserve a bit of modesty, but his arms were on full display right up to his shoulders. With a sigh, he stepped out the room and closed the door.
He turned around and found Beomgyu staring at him with an intense gaze. He stepped closer and squeezed Taehyunâs bicep, making his skin tingle and his face flush.
âPerfect,â Beomgyu hummed. âNow I can see those muscular arms of yours properly.â
Taehyun gulped. âShouldnât we get going?â
Beomgyu sighed and slapped Taehyunâs chest playfully. âYou never let me have any fun. But okay, sure. Letâs go meet the mermaids.â
Once again, Beomgyu led Taehyun through the forest.
âWeâre just going to walk this time,â Beomgyu explained. âThe mermaid lagoon isnât very far from here, so thereâs no need to fly.â
Taehyun found he was grateful for that. He was starting to appreciate having his feet firmly planted on the ground, even if that ground was uneven forest floor.
He continued alongside Beomgyu, content to admire the wildness of the forest around him. It was another beautiful day, and Taehyun couldnât help but let himself be distracted by how lovely it all was.
âLook out!â Beomgyu yelled suddenly, grabbing his arm and pulling him back a step.
Taehyun startled and looked at Beomgyu in confusion. As far as he could tell, there was nothing to look out for.
Beomgyu dropped his hand and picked a stone up from off the ground. He threw it just where Taehyun had been about to step, and a net sprung up around the rock and rose until it was high above them, hanging from a tree branch.
âWhat the fuck,â Taehyun hissed.
âPirate traps,â Beomgyu stated. âYou really have to keep a sharp eye out for them.â
Taehyun suddenly remembered the sailboat with the black flag heâd seen when they first arrived. His brow furrowed.
âBeomgyu, why are pirates setting traps in the forest?â
The other boy waved his hand dismissively. âEh, theyâre trying to catch me. We had a bit of a misunderstanding a long time ago, and now we have beef. Iâm sure they think Iâll do something for them if they get me.â
âWhat do they want?â Taehyun asked.
âDoesnât matter,â Beomgyu said, âbecause I canât give it to them anyway.â
Taehyun wondered about that, but Beomgyu was already walking again. He took one last glance at the rock in the net hanging above him, then hurried to catch up.
They walked for a little while longer until they broke through the trees and reached the rocky edge of a lagoon. The water was a stunning turquoise colour and so clear that Taehyun could see right to the bottom if he looked straight down. The lagoon was almost perfectly circular, surrounded by the forest all around, except on the far edge where the open sea spilled in from over a sand bar.
What was truly amazing about it, though, were the merfolk lounging in small groups on the rocks that peeked out above the water.
There were twoâa mermaid and a mermanâon the large rock closest to them. They were sunning themselves and eating grapes out of a bowl that was made of a large oyster shell, and they were intimidatingly beautiful. The mermaid had a glistening tail of blue and gold scales, with nothing covering her breasts but her long, cascading hair. The merman was handsome, his chest toned and muscular, with a tail of green and silver scales. They both had pointed features that added a sharp edge to their beauty, almost impishâalmost dangerous. The sight of them had Taehyun rooted to his place.
Just then, the mermaid looked over and waved.
âBeomgyu, hi!â she called. âCome play with us!â
The merman looked up and followed her gaze. He nodded towards Beomgyu, his eyes lingering before he finally glanced at Taehyun.
âI see you brought a new toy,â the merman mused.
Beomgyu sighed, so quiet that Taehyun could barely hear it, and then he spoke up.
âTaehyun, this is Eros and Narcissa. Narcissa and Eros, this is Taehyun. Heâs going to be staying with me for a while.â
âWhy donât you both come over here so we can get to know each other?â Narcissa purred, running her fingertips along the surface of the water. âI swear the water is just perfect.â
âOh, please do,â Eros crooned. âLetâs see whatâs so special about Beomgyuâs new friend. Iâd love to know what heâs hiding under that vest.â
Taehyun glanced at Erosâs bare chest warily. He knew his own body was nothing to be ashamed ofâhe worked out often enough to have toned muscles of his ownâbut there was something about the mermanâs gaze that made him feel so judged, as if he was nothing but an inconvenience.
âI think Iâll stay over here for now,â he said, clutching the hem of his vest self-consciously. âDonât want to get a sunburn, you know?â
Beomgyu looked at him, his face unreadable, then shrugged and pulled off his cardigan, dropping it to the ground by his feet. Taehyun didnât miss the hungry way Narcissa and Eros stared at Beomgyuâs body, nor the way his own heart sped up at the sight of him.
Beomgyu slid off the rock heâd been standing on and entered the water. He swam the short distance over to Eros and Narcissa and crawled up to recline between them, leaning back on his elbows. The sun glistened off his wet skin, making him shimmer.
Narcissa leaned in to feed Beomgyu a grape and wrapped the end of her tail around his calf.
âItâs been forever since youâve come to play with us,â Narcissa pouted. âItâs not the same with just Eros.â
âYes,â Eros purred, curling into Beomgyu to rest his head against his chest. âitâs been too long since weâve gotten to explore that delicious body of yours. Iâve been missing it.â
âSorry to keep you waiting,â Beomgyu murmured. âIâve been a bit busy.â
Taehyun leaned against a tree on the shore, watching them as they talked in low voices. Narcissa carded a hand through Beomgyuâs hair and whispered in his ear, and Eros traced circles on Beomgyuâs chest with his fingertips. Taehyun clenched and unclenched his jaw. The longer he watched, the more he felt something ugly growing in his chest.
Eros glanced at him and grinned darkly.
âHey Gyu,â the merman said, âI think your toy is looking a little upset over there by himself.â
âAw, he must be jealous,â Narcissa sang. âLook at him, all bothered. He must really have it bad for you, Beomie. Poor thing probably canât help himself around you.â
The two mermaids burst into giggles, and Taehyun looked away, wishing he could be anywhere else. A multitude of feelings churned inside him, but he wasnât quite able to grasp any of them. He was embarrassed and confused, unable to defend himself from their words nor the thought that maybe staying with Beomgyu was a mistake.
Beomgyu frowned and squirmed out from between Eros and Narcissa. He slid back into the water and made his way over to Taehyun. The two mermaids called after him, but he ignored them. He was completely focussed on Taehyun, approaching until they were standing face to face.
âIâm a huge fool, arenât I?â Taehyun whispered.
âNo,â Beomgyu said firmly.
He wrapped his arms around Taehyunâs waist and pulled him close so that their bodies were pressed together, then leaned in to press a kiss to Taehyunâs lips. Despite keeping it closed-mouthed, it was long and deep. Taehyun felt the tension leave his body, and he wrapped his arms around Beomgyuâs neck to kiss back. Beomgyu pressed harder, and Taehyun felt his knees go weak. He tried to deepen the kiss and licked at Beomgyuâs lips, but the other boy broke away, leaving Taehyun dizzy and wishing for more.
Before he pulled away completely, Beomgyu pressed his lips against Taehyunâs ear.
âYou have nothing to worry about, I promise,â he whispered.
Beomgyu reached out to grab Taehyunâs hand and made a show of linking their fingers together. From their place on the rock, Narcissa and Eros sneered at them.
âWell, itâs been fun,â Beomgyu said cheerily, âbut I think Taehyun and I are going to go find a swimming spot somewhere else. Take a little time for ourselves, if you know what I mean. See you later!â
Without waiting for a response, Beomgyu grabbed his cardigan from where heâd dropped it and pulled Taehyun back down the path theyâd come from, away from Eros and Narcissa.
Beomgyu murmured something about heading to the beach to swim where no one would bother them, then went uncharacteristically quiet. They walked through the woods in silence for a few minutes, but Taehyun still felt anxious. He couldnât shake the image of the mermaidsâ hands roaming all over Beomgyu, couldnât ignore the things theyâd said about the boy who claimed he wanted to fall in love with him.
âIs it true, what the mermaids said?â Taehyun asked quietly. âHave you reallyâŠyou know?â
âNo,â Beomgyu insisted. âItâs not actually possible with their anatomy. When Iâve gotten really lonely, Iâve made out with them and let them touch me, but itâs always been empty. The beings on this island only bother with you if they can get something out of it. For me with them, itâs always been my body. But Iâd never give any of them my heart.â
Taehyun felt a bit relieved at that, but he was still uneasy. âWhy would you want me to meet them if theyâre so awful?â
Beomgyu stopped walking and turned to look at Taehyun. âIf youâre going to be here for a while, you need to know what this place is really like so youâll be careful. I just donât want anything bad to happen to you if you go off on your own sometime.â
âSo, what they said really didnât mean anything?â
Beomgyu squeezed his hand. âOf course not, gorgeous. The only one I want to give my heart to is you, and that means so much more than anything Iâve ever done with them. Theyâre just mad because they can tell.â
Taehyun nodded, a small smile on his lips. He returned Beomgyuâs hand squeeze, feeling much more reassured. The two continued through the forest hand in hand.
Beomgyu giggled to himself. âWow, you must have been really jealous to be this worried. You must really be falling for me, arenât you gorgeous?â
Taehyun swatted his arm, but he blushed anyway. âShut up.â
***
The next few days passed by in a blur. Taehyun and Beomgyu did everything together, with Beomgyu determined to show Taehyun absolutely everything the island had to offer. They swam at the beach, hiked in the mountains, and chased each other through a meadow. With each day, Taehyun found himself more and more captivated by the island, and by Beomgyu.
The other boy made him breakfast every day and paid him the sweetest compliments, and Taehyun found himself yearning for his smile as much as his touch. Beomgyu was just so easy to talk to. He was funny and kind, and though Taehyun was too shy to admit it, falling in love with Beomgyu was starting to seem less crazy than it had when the other boy first suggested it. He caught himself staring sometimes just to admire him, wondering what twist of fate made the other boy choose him.
On what would have been Saturday if he was still on normal time at home, Taehyun rested in a rope hammock by Beomgyuâs willow tree, reflecting on what was happening to him. The realization that it should have been the weekend by now brought Taehyun a pang of worry, but he wasnât sure why. All heâd had planned was cake tasting with his sister. Why would he be worried about that?
It was odd, the way he felt like there was something he was missing, but it was hard to be bothered about it in that moment. It was nearly sunset, and a light breeze blew through the forest around him. The sound of fluttering leaves brought him back to the peace of the island, and he closed his eyes to simply listen to the world around him.
A moment later, the sound of footsteps approaching made Taehyun open his eyes again, and he found Beomgyu gazing down at him fondly.
âHey,â Taehyun said softly.
Beomgyu smiled. âHey. I was thinking, if you want to, we could go meet the fairies in their grove tonight. Theyâre having their midsummer festival.â
Taehyun sat up and looked at Beomgyu curiously. âA fairy midsummer festival? Whatâs it like?â
âI could explain, but itâd be easier if you let me show you,â Beomgyu said coyly. âTrust me, itâs really magical.â
Beomgyu offered his hand to Taehyun, and Taehyun raised an eyebrow but took it anyway. He let Beomgyu help him out of the hammock and lead him deeper in the forest.
The sun dipped lower in the sky, bathing the forest in golden light, the shadows growing long. Taehyun had never been to the fairy grove before, though Beomgyu had told him about it. As they wandered down the path, the trees grew larger and more magnificentâlike Beomgyuâs willow tree, but many had brightly coloured leaves and blooming flowers.
Soon, they entered an area encircled by trees covered in pink petals, the branches spilling down low enough to touch. There was a small, cleared space in the center with a fire pit surrounded by stones and piled with wood, ready to be lit.
Beomgyu took a seat by the fire pit and gestured for Taehyun to join him.
âWelcome to the fairy grove,â Beomgyu announced.
Taehyun sat next to Beomgyu and glanced around. The grove really was beautiful. The golden light of the setting sun made the petals on the trees look even more vibrant, and there was something about it that did feel like it was hiding something magical. Still, there were no fairies to be seen.
Taehyun looked at Beomgyu questioningly, but Beomgyu just laughed.
âJust wait,â he said. âYouâll see soon.â
They sat a little while longer, and Taehyun watched the forest closely. He wasnât sure what to expect, but he didnât want to miss anything. Then, once the sun was just about to dip below the horizon, tiny lights started to appear out of the shadows.
At first, Taehyun thought they might be fireflies coming down from the trees, but then they came closer. As the first of the fairies descended into the clearing near him and Beomgyu, Taehyun could see they were tiny people, no bigger than his pinky finger. They all glowed with magic, shiny golden dust shimmering on their translucent, iridescent wings. They wore clothes made of leaves and flower petals, and though they didnât seem afraid, most kept their distance from the two boys.
One brave fairy flew in above the fire pit and looked at Beomgyu intently. Beomgyu nodded, seeming to understand, and the fairy began sprinkling pixie dust over the fire pit. As soon as the dust came in contact with the wood, a fire started, and the fairy fluttered away to avoid the growing flames.
Taehyun looked around in awe, the grove now filled with tiny, glowing fairies fluttering in between the tree branches and around the bushes.
âThis is incredible,â Taehyun breathed.
âThis is just the beginning,â Beomgyu said. âJust wait until the music starts.â
âMusic?â
Beomgyu nodded and pointed upward. Taehyun looked closely at the fairies perched on the branches just above them and noticed they all had odd looking instruments with them.
âThey may be small, but with enough of them playing, you can really hear them.â
As Taehyun waited for the fairies to start playing their music to begin the festival, Beomgyu stood up and plucked something from one of the trees nearby. When he sat back down, Taehyun could see it looked almost like a lotus flower, but the petals were thick, making it look more like a white succulent. Beomgyu plucked two of the petals and handed one to Taehyun.
âWhat is it?â Taehyun asked, holding the petal up to examine it.
âThe fairies have a name for it, but I just call it fairy fruit,â Beomgyu explained. âThe fairies use it to make a kind of liquor thatâs traditional to their festivals. They donât share, but the fruit itself has the same effect. You donât have to have it if you donât want to, but itâs usually part of the experience.â
Taehyun regarded the petal with some suspicion. He held it up to his nose and found it had no scent at all. He wondered how it might affect him, but his curiosity quickly won out. He figured it couldnât be any stranger than anything else heâd experienced since he got to Neverland, so he popped it into his mouth and chewed tentatively. Its texture was like gummy candy, but it was otherwise tasteless.
Beomgyu grinned and followed Taehyunâs lead, eating a petal of his own.
âNow, we wait for the music to begin,â Beomgyu announced.
Another moment passed quietly, when suddenly, the atmosphere shifted. The sun had fully disappeared, leaving the forest in darkness broken only by the light of the fairies and the fire. At first, the sound was quiet, barely noticeable, and then it grew louder.
It was music unlike anything Taehyun had ever heard before. Beautiful, but somehow haunting, the instrumental growing slowly louder as more and more fairies joined the song. Soon, the music filled the grove, the song becoming louder and more festive. The fairies who werenât playing instruments began to dance in pairs and groups, a kind of indiscernible pattern to their movements.
Taehyun found himself wanting to dance with them, so when Beomgyu stood up and offered him his hand, he gladly accepted. Soon, Beomgyu grasped both of Taehyunâs hands, smiling and laughing as they spun around in circles. Taehyun was a little hesitant at first, but gradually loosened up as they danced together.
The glow of the fairies danced in tandem with the flames of the fire, moving mesmerizingly with the music. Taehyun swayed along with them, letting himself get lost in it. Beomgyu let go of his hands and grabbed his hips to pull him closer, and Taehyun reached out to wrap his arms around his neck.
It was entrancing, the driving beat of the music and Beomgyuâs hands moving along his hips and back as they danced, bodies flush against each other. Around him, the forest was a blur of lights and colour, his senses overwhelmed by the music in his ears and Beomgyuâs touch all over him. They could have been dancing for five minutes or five hours and Taehyun wouldnât have known the difference.
Beomgyu leaned in to dance with his forehead against Taehyunâs, and Taehyun couldnât take it anymore. His lips crashed against Beomgyuâs, needing to close that last bit of space between them. He closed his eyes and licked at Beomgyuâs bottom lip until their tongues slid together, finally getting what heâd been craving for days. Beomgyu kissed him back just as eagerly, barely pausing to breathe.
It was a blur of swaying and kissing as the music went on around them, neither aware of much besides the feel of each other. Taehyun let Beomgyu pull his hips even harder against him, desperate to be closer than theyâd ever been. If he felt Beomgyuâs lips leave his own, he chased after them.
They danced until they tripped over each otherâs feet, crashing to the ground in a fit of giggles next to the burning fire.
***
Beomgyu opened his eyes to see Taehyunâs sleeping face just inches from his own. He smiled to himself. The fairy fruit had reduced the night before to glimpses and sensations in his mind, but the hazy memory of Taehyunâs mouth still lingered on his lips. The two had fallen asleep in the soft undergrowth beneath a large tree near their fire, which had burned itself out overnight. Now, it was almost dawn, the sky tinted lighter in anticipation of the rising sun.
The boy sat up and rubbed his eyes, then turned to look at Taehyun. His heart warmed just at the sight of him sleeping so peacefully next to him. He slept on his side, curled slightly around his bent knees, his head pillowed on his elbow. When Beomgyu looked at his face, he was taken, as always, by how lovely he was. With his eyes closed, Taehyunâs long lashes splayed across his cheeks, and his lips were swollen but completely relaxed, absent of any signs of worry or stress. A piece of hair hung down across his forehead, and Beomgyu longed to gently brush it back into place. He didnât dare out of fear of accidentally waking him.
Is this what love feels like? Beomgyu wondered. This beautiful, horrible ache?
Taehyun was right there, and yet he longed for him like heâd never longed for anything in his life. It was like he was a dehydrated man in the desert, a glass of water in view but always just out of reach. It was indescribable. He was sure that if anything were to take Taehyun from him now, he would shatter.
What have I done? I donât deserve him.Â
At that moment, the sound of breaking twig made Beomgyu snap to attention. He looked up and saw a tall boy with shaggy dark hair peaking out from behind a tree just across from Taehyun.
Soobin. Whatâs he doing here?
Soobin glanced down at Taehyun, then back to Beomgyu. He raised an eyebrow questioningly.
What are you up to? Soobin mouthed.
Beomgyu glared back and shook his head. Itâs none of your business.
Soobin frowned. He gestured for Beomgyu to come over to him, but Beomgyu shook his head again. He glanced up at the rapidly lightening sky with concern, then back to Soobin.
Thereâs no time; you should go, Beomgyu mouthed.
Soobinâs shoulders slumped, as if defeated, but his gaze bore into Beomgyu for a long moment before he disappeared back into the woods.
Beomgyu understood the meaning:Â This conversation isnât over.
He sighed and looked back down at Taehyun. He took a moment just to admire him, then laid down to fall back asleep.
***
When Taehyun awoke the next morning, he opened his eyes to see Beomgyu staring at him, his gaze soft and fond.
âGood morning, gorgeous,â Beomgyu whispered, reaching out to brush Taehyunâs bangs off his face. âDid you sleep well?â
Taehyun hummed incoherently and sat up. He blinked and looked around to see the soft morning sun shining down through the trees, the fire pit reduced to ashes. He didnât remember falling asleep in the forest, but that appeared to be how the previous night ended.
Fuzzy, rose-tinted memories from the night before played his mindâthe sound of music with a melody he couldnât recall and Beomgyu, the feel of him as they danced together and the echo of his lips.
Taehyun blushed thinking about it, not sure what came over him to be so forward, and even more embarrassed that he wasnât sure he could trust his intoxicated memories.
He glanced at Beomgyu, who was now sitting up but still gazing at him with an expression heâd never seen before on the other boy. Taehyun looked down and fiddled with his fingers.
âLast nightâŠweââ
âMade out, yeah,â Beomgyu sighed happily.
Taehyun rubbed the back of his neck. âI donât know what came over me. Iâm sorry. Iâm not sure I even remember it right.â
Beomgyu laughed. âYou have nothing to be sorry for. It was amazing, and Iâm just as guilty anyway.â
Taehyunâs face turned an even darker shade of red. He quickly glanced over himself and was somewhat relieved to see he was fully clothed, terrified that there may be a lot more he couldnât remember.
âWas thatâŠIs that all we did? Just kissing?â
Beomgyu smirked. âWhy? Wishing we did a little more?â
Taehyun sputtered. âI, umâI just wanted to make sure I wasnât forgetting anything important.â
The other boy nodded, amused, then stood up and offered his hand to Taehyun.
âThe fairy fruit does hit hard the first time. Come on, letâs go back to the willow and get you some food to help clear your head.â
Taehyun let Beomgyu help him up, then walked along beside him as they made their way through the forest towards the willow tree. They walked quietly, both a bit tired from sleeping on the forest floor. Occasionally, Taehyun would catch Beomgyu sneaking glances at him, his eyes half-lidded and a soft smile on his face.
What happened last night thatâs got him staring at me like that?Â
To take his mind off of his embarrassment, he tried to distract himself by thinking about the fairies. He tried to recall how the midsummer festival had been before the fairy fruit kicked in and his memories got fuzzy. It had been beautiful and magical, but the detail that stuck out to him most was the golden fairy dust shimmering off of all the fairies wingsâthe same dust heâd seen on Beomgyu the night they met, and every time theyâd flown together since.
âBeomgyu,â Taehyun said suddenly. âCan you fly because the fairies give you some of their magic dust?â
Beomgyu laughed, but there was a bit of an edge to it.
âYou really donât miss anything, do you? Youâre right. They share some of their fairy dust with me so that I can fly back to Earth sometimes. I need to get a new supply from them once in a while.â
Taehyun nodded, turning a memory over in his mind.
âYou told me that no one on this island does something if they donât get some kind of benefit from it,â Taehyun mused. âWhat do you have to give up to for the fairies to share their magic like that?â
Beomgyu stopped walking, his lips pursed. He wouldnât meet Taehyunâs eyes when he spoke.
âThe fairies are creatures of the island, so the island itself is what sustains their life force. Iâve already given myself to the island, so without me, there is no Neverland. Thereâs nothing more they can take from me.â
He gave Taehyun a sad smile before continuing. âIf the mermaids had my body, the fairies have my soul. The only thing I can give freely is my heart, and you already know itâs yours.â
Taehyunâs heart leapt at the last words, but he frowned anyway.
If itâs the only thing thatâs really yours, how can I take it from you?
He wanted to ask Beomgyu more questions to try and understand how his bond with the island really worked, but the words caught in his throat. Beomgyu was looking ahead, lost in thought, and Taehyun didnât want to push a subject that always seemed to make him sad. Instead, he reached out to take his hand.
âCome on. Letâs get back to the willow.â
Beomgyu laced his fingers through Taehyunâs and nodded.
The rest of the day passed by lazily. Taehyun and Beomgyu spent most of their time in comfortable silence, relaxing and mulling around the willow tree doing their own things, though always in each otherâs company. Occasionally, Taehyun could hear Beomgyu sigh softly, and the other boy didnât stop sneaking fond glances at him for the rest of the day. Taehyun was used to Beomgyuâs attention, but there was something about how he was acting now that made his heart flutter.
Some time after they ate dinner, Taehyunâs eyelids started to droop. Beomgyu seemed like he was fading too, so they both decided to turn in early for the night. Taehyun headed to his room and pulled the door closed behind him to get ready for bed.
Taehyun yawned, eager to have a proper sleep. He pulled out the T-shirt and shorts heâd been using for pyjamas and began to change. He slipped into the shorts, then unbuttoned the denim vest Beomgyu gave him. He shrugged it off and started to fold it up when there was a knock at the door.
Without waiting for a response, Beomgyu opened the door and stepped into the room.
âHey Taehyun, I was just coming toâŠâ
Beomgyuâs words trailed off, his eyes widening a bit as he noticed Taehyunâs state of undress. Taehyun stood there bare-chested, and although he knew he was blushing a bit, he couldnât help thinking Beomgyuâs cheeks must have been a lot more flushed than his own. His lip twitched upward, and he fought the urge to smirk. Beomgyu had never seen Taehyun shirtless before, and Taehyun had never seen Beomgyu so flustered.
Beomgyu let out a breath and averted his eyes. âSorry. I didnât realizeâŠI just wanted to come say goodnight.â
Taehyun chuckled softly and set down the vest.
âYou have nothing to be sorry for,â Taehyun said, echoing Beomgyuâs words from earlier. âI was just getting ready for bed.â
Beomgyu took a step closer. His bashfulness was already fading, replaced by a mischievous glint in his eyes.
âYou know, Iâve been thinking about last night,â Beomgyu murmured. âItâs a real shame because we made out and itâs all fuzzy because of the fairy fruit. It mustâve been so good, but neither of us really remember it.â
Taehyunâs breath hitched. âWhat are you saying?â
Beomgyu took another step closer, so close that Taehyun was reminded of that night in his bedroom the first time they kissed. Beomgyu reached out and ran his fingertips down Taehyunâs bare side to rest by his hip, and he tensed, heat flooding through his body.
Beomgyu smiled at him sweetly, teasing.
âIâm saying, donât you think itâd be better if we could remember it clearly, the way it felt to be with each other like that?â
Taehyun took in a shuddering breath. He wanted Beomgyu. He always did, even when he was too shy or embarrassed to admit it. Beomgyu knew exactly how to drive him crazy, to make him let go of his hesitation and chase his own desire.
âDo you want me to kiss you?â Taehyun whispered.
âSo badly,â Beomgyu breathed.
Taehyun closed his eyes and leaned in to connect their lips, and Beomgyu raised his other hand so both of them rested on Taeyhunâs hips. It was slow at first, sparks running through Taehyunâs body as his mouth moved against Beomgyuâs. Soon, Beomgyu grew more insistant, wrapping his arms around Taehyunâs waist to pull their bodies together. Taehyun parted his lips to let in Beomgyuâs tongue and tangled his fingers in his hair.
It was so much better than it had been the night before. Everything was so vivid and so intentional that Taehyun thought heâd never experienced anything so strongly before. Beomgyu disconnected their lips to trail kisses along Taehyunâs neck and exposed collarbones, and he wimpered at the sensation. No one had ever kissed him like that before.
Beomgyu brought their lips back together and pressed his hands against Taehyunâs chest, gently pushing him back until the backs of his legs were up against the bed. Beomgyu sucked on Taehyunâs bottom lip, and Taehyun groaned, slipping his hands under Beomgyuâs shirt just to feel more of him.
Beomgyu broke away and gave Taehyun a wicked smile as he pulled his own shirt off and dropped it to the floor. Then, he surged forward again, kissing Taehyun with so much force that he fell back onto the bed with Beomgyu on top of him.
Beomgyu adjusted himself so that he was sitting on Taehyunâs hips, straddling him. Both of them were breathing heavily, their kisses getting wetter and sloppier, hands exploring every inch of each otherâs bare skin.
When Taehyun felt Beomgyuâs hands start to move a little lower, teasing along the waistband of his shorts, the reality of what he was doing hit him like a bucket of cold water.
Wait. Not yet, he thought.
The kisses slowed down, and Beomgyu took his hands off Taehyun as if he could sense his hesitation. He broke the kiss and leaned back a bit to look at Taehyun.
âDo you want to stop?â he asked gently.
Taehyun nodded. âIs it okay if we just sleep this time?â
Beomgyu smiled at him softly and maneuvered them so that he was lying on his back with Taehyun in his arms. Taehyun snuggled in to rest his head on Beomgyuâs chest, his tiredness already starting to take over.
âIâd never ask you to do more than youâre ready for,â Beomgyu said, leaning down to place a light kiss on the top of Taehyunâs head. âJust being here with you is enough.â
Taehyun hummed happily and closed his eyes, feeling safe and warm under the covers with Beomgyuâs arms around him.
âGoodnight, gorgeous,â Beomgyu whispered.
As Taehyun began to drift off, he couldnât help marvelling at how incredible it felt to be with Beomgyu, at how attached he was to a boy heâd known for barely week.
Beomgyu, what have you done to me?

Part 1

Part 1: Devil by the Window
Taehyun stared down at his plate, pushing what was left of his dinner around with his fork. Physically, he was at the dinner table with his parents and older sister Seoyeon, but mentally he was wrapped up in his latest internship application.
Two months until university starts. One internship application due at the end of this week. Three due next week. If I play it right, I can pace myself at three hours a dayâ
âTaehyun, what do you think?â
His head snapped up and found his family staring at him expectantly. He gave them a sheepish smile.
âSorry, what were you saying?â
Seoyeon gave him a fond look. âI was just asking if you thought Namjoon would like the lilies or the hydrangeas better for table pieces? Do you remember when we went to the florist last weekend? I need to place an order soon, but I canât decide.â
Right, his sisterâs wedding was coming up at the end of the summer and heâd been trying to help her with the preparations. Seoyeon was six years his senior, but he could hardly say no to helping her when sheâd asked. At the time, sheâd said she felt closer to him than her own maid of honour.
Of course you do, Taehyun had joked. Iâm your brother. Iâll do whatever you need.
He still felt that way, but he was barely 18 years old, and the more he tried to help, the more out of his depth he was.
âUm, I think the hydrangeas would be good,â Taehyun offered. âThe petals are kind of like the patterns on your dress, and I think Namjoon would be happy with anything that reminded him of you.â
His parents cooed at him.
âSuch a sweet little brother,â his mom said. âYou should take his advice, Seoyeon.â
His father was nodding. âDefinitely. You know, when he talks like that, I just know heâs going to get himself a wonderful wiâ er, husband one day.â
Taehyun rolled his eyes. Heâd told his family he was gay just a week before his high school graduation, and even though Seoyeon had been great, his parents were still a little awkward about it. He knew they were trying their best and would get there eventually, but it was tiring.
âMay I be excused?â Taehyun asked. âI have some more internship applications to work on.â
His mother pouted. âOh honey, you know your father was just teasing.â
âI know, Mom,â he said, trying put on his best reassuring smile. âI really am just busy. I need to get these done if I want a decent resume after university.â
âGo on, son,â his father said. âBut try not to worry so much. You havenât even started university yet. Your future isnât going anywhere.â
Taehyun nodded, then grabbed his plate and left the table.
Up in his room, Taehyun opened his window, hoping that the fresh air of the summer night would help him concentrate. His room wasnât very big, with just enough space for a single bed, his desk, and his dresser, and it tended to get stuffy when the weather got warm.
With a sigh, he fell into his desk chair, his list of engineering internship applications still open on his computer. He still hadnât decided if he wanted to pursue mechatronics or chemical engineering, so he figured heâd apply to all the student internships in both fields just in case. He knew it would be hard to balance an internship on top of his classes once he started at university, but he knew he had to be competitive and do whatever he could to stand out.
As he banged away on his keyboard working on an application, time passed by around him. He felt good at first, satisfied with his answer to the question heâd been working on, but that only lasted for about an hour when the stress and fatigue started to get to him. He frowned at the next question on the application, his mind drawing a blank on what he should answer.
Maybe I should stop for a bit, Taehyun thought. Just a quick break.
He grabbed his phone from where it sat on the desk beside his keyboard and unlocked it to check his messages. The first was one from Jay to their group chat with Jake and Sunghoon.
Jay:
yo so my parents booked our tickets to the US a month early
i guess iâm not gonna make it to sunghoonâs in august :(
Taehyun chewed on his bottom lip and closed the message. Jake, Sunghoon, and Jay had been his best friends all through high school. They were all going to different universities in the fall, with Jay moving to the US to study, so Sunghoonâs parents agreed to let them plan a trip to their family cabin to hang out one last time before they had to separate. Now Jay wasnât going to be there.
Taehyun ran a hand through his pink hair and closed the message, moving onto the next one. This one was from his boss at the landscaping company he was working for over the summer.
Mr. Park
Taehyun, I need you to work on Saturday.
Donât give me excuses. Be a man and tell your sister you have more important things to do.
Taehyun scowled. What an asshole.
Mr. Park knew Taehyun had planned to go wedding cake tasting with Seoyeon that day. Heâd booked off every single day heâd need to help her out when heâd taken the job, but the old bastard didnât care. Taehyun had just wanted to spend some time with his sister before he had to leave for school and make some money to start paying off his tuition. He questioned whether this job was going to be worth it.
Taehyun threw his phone at his bed without answering either message and groaned. He rubbed his face with his hands.
I just want it all to stop, he thought. I wish it would all just stop. Just for little while.
A light breeze swirled through the room, his curtains fluttering slightly before settling back down, still.
Taehyun tried to pull himself together. If it hadnât been so late, heâd have gone for a run or headed to the gym to distract himself. Instead, he turned back to his computer and his internship application, hoping he could at least get that done before he had to face anything else.
He read over the question that had originally stumped him and immediately dropped his head on his desk. There was a satisfying thud. He certainly found the pain distracting, so he did it again for good measure.
âYou know, youâre going to hurt yourself if you keep doing that,â a voice said.
Taehyun shot to his feet and whipped his head around. He was about to yell, but the sound caught in his throat when he laid eyes on the intruder.
There, sitting on his windowsill, was the most breathtaking boy Taehyun had ever seen. He had one knee bent with his foot propped on the sill, while the other dangled down towards the floor. He wore a pair of tight brown pants and a deep green cardigan of a light, knitted fabric, one side hanging off his shoulder. He wore nothing beneath the cardigan but a couple of rope necklaces adorned with stones and shells, leaving his toned chest exposed. His skin seemed to shimmer in places where it was covered in a fine, glittering dust. Taehyun had to force himself to pull his eyes away from the boyâs dazzling body to look at his face. The boy was smirking, but his eyes were intenseâdeep brown and settled on Taehyun as if he were prey to be devoured.
âWh-Who are you?â Taehyun stammered. âWhat are you doing here?â
The boy stood up and took a step towards Taehyun.
âWho am I?â the boy mused, pretending to think for a moment. âYou can just call me Beomgyu. But Iâm much more interested in who you are, gorgeous.â
Beomgyu took another step forward, and Taehyun found himself backed up against his desk chair when he tried to step away. Had his room always felt so small? His mouth ran dry.
âYou didnât answer my second question,â Taehyun said, trying to keep his voice even.
Beomgyu smiled and moved closer, so close that Taehyun could reach out and touch him if he dared. He knew he should be scared, should yell for help or do anything to get away from this intruder, but he couldnât. He couldnât pry his eyes from Beomgyu.
âHm, youâre as clever as you are handsome, arenât you?" Beomgyu purred, his eyes raking over Taehyunâs body. âHow about this, you tell me your name, and Iâll tell you why Iâm here.â
Taehyun suddenly felt very warm, his cheeks burning.
I have to be dreaming right now.Â
He swallowed before he spoke. âAlright, Iâm Taehyun. Satisfied?â
Beomgyuâs eyes darkened, hungry, and he moved so close that he and Taehyun were chest to chest. Taehyun could hardly breathe.
âSatisfied? Not nearly,â Beomgyu murmured. âBut at least I have your name now, Taehyun.â He reached up to twirl a stand of Taehyunâs hair. âAs for what Iâm doing here, wellâŠYour heart made a wish. Iâm simply here to grant it.â
Taehyun had to close his eyes for a moment. His heart was sure wishing for something with this intoxicating man so close to him, but he was absolutely going to ignore that. He tried to think, but there was nothing else in his head but Beomgyu, his fingers still twirling his hair and the heat of him against his body.
âWhat do you mean?â Taehyun said, opening his eyes and forcing himself to be calm.
Beomgyu smiled, sickeningly sweet. âYou wanted time to stop, didnât you? What if I told you I could make that happen? You just have to come with me.â
Taehyun bit his lip and tried to look anywhere but at Beomgyu. He ran the words over in his head, fighting to be rational.
âI didnât mean I wanted it to stop forever,â Taehyun started. âJustâŠjust for a little. But it doesnât matter. Itâs not possible to stop time. And youâŠI think I dreamed you.â
Beomgyu laughed â a deep, warm sound. He untangled his fingers from Taehyunâs hair and caressed his cheek, running his fingertips along his jawline.
âOh, Taehyun, you flatter me, but I promise you, Iâm very real. And there is a place, just as real, where time stands still. I can take you there. Weâll go together.â
TogetherâŠ
Taehyunâs resolve was crumbling. Beomgyu was a stranger, but his touch was like fire on his skin, and his voice filled him with such want.
More timeâŠall the time in the world, if what heâs saying is true.  All that time with BeomgyuâŠHim. Me. UsâŠTogether. If Iâm not dreaming, then Iâm dead and Beomgyu was sent to drag me to hell.
âHow?â Taehyun whispered. âHow do we get there?â
Beomgyu moved his hand down from Taehyunâs cheek to trace circles on his shoulder.
âWe fly, of course. Itâs deliciously simple.â
âBut I canât fly.â
âI can help you,â Beomgyu said, his voice low. âIâll share my magic with you.â
âAnd how will you do that?â
Beomgyu moved ever closer, his nose brushing against Taehyunâs, his eyelids fluttering closed.
âJust kiss me.â
So Taehyun did. He closed his eyes and leaned forward to close what little space was left between them until their lips pressed together. His heart pounded and there was nothing but heat rushing through his body, nothing but his lips moving against Beomgyuâs. His body ached to be closer, wantingâneedingâmore. But just as Taehyun pushed forward to deepen their kiss, Beomgyu pulled away.
âPerfect,â Beomgyu said, the smirk back on his face. âI think thatâll be more than enough.â
Then, Beomgyu traced the back of his fingers down Taehyun's forearm, leaving his skin burning and tingling where they touched.
So Beomgyu led Taehyun to the windowsill, their hands still clasped together. Beomgyu stepped up, then pulled Taehyun up next to him, with nothing but the cool night air in front of them.
âDo you trust me?â Beomgyu asked playfully.
Taehyun shook his head. Truthfully, he thought Beomgyu was leading him to his death, and Taehyun was going to let him just because he was hot.
Beomgyu giggled. âOkay, then just hold on to me. Second star to the right and straight on âtil morning.â
Before Taehyun had a chance to react, Beomgyu leapt forward and pulled Taehyun with him. Taehyun squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his hand around Beomgyuâs like his life depended on it. And then they were rising.
Slowly, Taehyun opened his eyes to see the lights of Seoul shrinking below him. Just above him, Beomgyu kept floating upward, tugging Taehyun along by their joined hands. Soon, they were above the tallest skyscrapers, and the stars brightened, seeming almost close enough to touch. Taehyun relaxed his grip on Beomgyuâs hand, awestruck by the world around him.
âWeâre flying!â Taehyun yelled.
Beomgyu looked back and smiled at Taehyun, warm and genuine. He squeezed his hand.
âYes, we certainly are.â
They continued upwards until the clear sky gradually filled with clouds. Eventually, Taehyun could see nothing around him, and he only knew Beomgyu was still there because he refused to let go of his hand.
Iâm an idiot, Taehyun thought. An absolute fool. Heâs leading me to my death and Iâm so gay I let him do it. Not that I have much of a choice at this point.
Still, they kept going. The clouds grew so dense that they were shrouded in darkness. But just before Taehyun started to really panic, he started to see light again.
The clouds gradually faded to fluffy white around them, then into whisps, until they were almost dissipated. It was then that Taehyun chanced a glanced below him, and his eyes widened.
âWow,â he said.
Beomgyu turned to look back at Taehyun and swept out his free arm to gesture at the world below them.
âWelcome to Neverland.â
