Alright here is something that was on my mind for a while about Super Paper Mario:

We know that the color palette used by Nintendo to depict pure evil/darkness is dark blue/purple, with black and hints of red. Looking at the main SPM villain cast, Blumiere does have those colors, except for the fact that most of his outfit is white, color of purity and hope.

Now, knowing that this game's design is mostly focused on shapes, we could follow shape theory fairly easily there. The villains are mostly made out of squares and rectangles, meaning neutrality, Bleck does have some sharp edges but it's easily balanced with the many round details present in his outfits, giving hints of kindness (which is also present in some way in everyone in some way, mostly Mr.L because Luigi is a good guy to begin with)

Now enter this mf:

Mostly purple outfit, with black and a hint of red, yellow being a complimentary color to purple as well as a fairly close approximation to red, the only instances where there is white in his design is to emphasize the black parts and give them an outline, but it's also on the "comedy" side of his mask, the other side being tragedy. The white here either doesn't have any significance, or it is shown in a negative way, such as mockery complementing tragedy.

The shapes used are mostly triangles, meaning more often evil, even the squares are pointing up, leading to even more sharpness, and there are no full rounds or ovals to be seen. Everything, from his shoes to his hat, is sharper than a knife.

The mask by itself is, as stated before, a comedy/tragedy mask, used mostly in theaters, and it does align with Dimentio's personality, but mostly with the fact that he is an actor and hides his true self/intentions. We could quite literally say that he is two faced.

So yeah, just by looking at his design we were given the story, the big twist, and we knew who the real antagonist was.

In conclusion:

Peak character design, love him, 10/10 scrimblo

well i won’t let this get too long but i wanted to take a moment to talk about one of my favourite “friendships” in the game. it’s… not really a friendship i guess lol since it’s entirely one-sided, but either way i want to talk about chara and undyne.

just as flowey’s favourite character is papyrus, and assuming narrachara is true (and i mean, come on), chara’s favourite character is definitely undyne. and let me tell you, as far as i’m concerned they are a BIG fan.

the amount of respect chara has for undyne over other characters really jumps out during undyne’s boss fights. while chara lightly prods fun at most monsters in the game in their flavour text, undyne is one of the few characters they never disrespect. “undyne points heroically towards the sky.” “undyne suplexes a large boulder, just because she can.” “the heroine that NEVER gives up.” given these lines and all the others (and chara has a LOT of lines for undyne) it really sounds like chara finds undyne, to use the technical phrase, EXTREMELY cool.

on a much darker but still significant note, if undyne is killed in a neutral route, chara eventually trails off and goes completely silent as she melts:

this is the only instance where chara does this in a fight not involving one of the boss monsters. and when the narrator’s at a loss for words, that’s a pretty big deal.

undyne isn’t even disrespected in the no mercy route, a route where toriel isn’t worth talking to, papyrus is forgettable, sans is the easiest enemy, etc, according to the flavour text. but undyne? even in the route where the objective is to kill everyone without caring for them, even after all the player’s influence… chara still refers to undyne as the heroine.

while there are other characters, like i said, who get special treatment in the narration like toriel, asriel, etc, there’s also the fact that undyne and chara, even with what little we know of chara’s true self, are similar in a lot of ways.

they’re both very determined people, for starters; when they have a plan or goal they stick to it no matter what. additionally, undyne is someone who fiercely loves monsterkind and would do anything for them. she’s not only kind to monsters in need (like alphys, shyren, and papyrus) but she will also defend them no matter what the personal cost to her (like monster kid). and i think chara, as someone who also loves monsterkind and is always presenting frisk with actions and hints to end battles with monsters peacefully, and who was willing to give up their own soul so the monsters could go free, would admire that so much.

so yeah!! maybe i’m reading into things too much, but to me chara is a big undyne fan. and if they had the chance to meet somehow, i think they would get along really well.
