I think there's sometimes a bit of a misconception in TOS spaces that a Vulcan's options during pon farr are fuck, kill, or die, but like. correct me if I'm wholly misremembering things, but that's not. actually true. Killing isn't supposed to end pon farr (in TOS canon, at least - idk if they retcon this in later treks). In the event of Spock killing Kirk, what was expected to happen was that Spock would then take T'Pring as his wife and then that would end his pon farr. It was a shock that he could just reject T'Pring! She was expecting that, in the event that Spock won, he would still be forced to take her as a wife - but instead Kirk's death just somehow snapped him out of his fever. And that's why amok time is gay. It's not just because they were rolling around in the sand! It's because the fact that Spock's pon farr ended after Kirk "died" implies either:
a) he came a little (which is gay)
or
b) he was so devastated at the thought that he killed his captain that it broke through the supposedly-unbreakable blood fever (which is really gay)
So my beta reader for the Big Fics is an astrophysicist, right. Who is currently also writing a hard sci-fi novel about the exploration of Phobos (more power to them, I cannot with the physics required for that, best I can do is soft sci-fi/fantasy and that reminds me I should finish that story).
Anyway I was bitching about how hard it is to come up with feasible planets in Star Wars because sometimes you need a new planet from scratch and sometimes you need to know more about a planet than the 'has jungles, is probably a moon technically' than Wookieepedia will give you, and they're like 'oh yeah I can do something about that'.
So they've written (in Matlab but they swear it will run as a .exe as well and I may be conscripted to embed it as a web tool at some point) a star system generator.
You input what you know about the planet (ecosystem, population, sun colour, does it have liquid water, does it have a moon or moons, is it a moon or moons, temperature averages, atmosphere, you get me) and it will give you the... everything else about the star system, in obedience to real-universe physics. And if you input nothing you get a randomly generated star system.
And I’m like oh I know people who will be into this with a vengeance, and they're not on Tumblr, so this is me seeing who exactly would be keen on, and I cannot stress this enough, a real-physics comprehensive star system generator.
It's still in the debugging phase (last error fixed: every planet wants to have a population of exactly 5000 regardless of other factors, turned out to be a missing equals sign somewhere), but I'm psyched for this and trying to gauge interest for how high a priority 'make this an accessible web tool' needs to be.

hey so spock isn't the only person with an absurd set of self-imposed rules because kirk is doing that too. like obviously spock must limit his emotions to suppress his human nature and follow the vulcan philosophy but kirk also limits and controls his own emotions a lot. the main difference in their methods is that while spock hides his emotions behind an emotionless mask, kirk uses his emotions to build the mask. like kirk's mask is made up of emotions but none of them are real. does this make sense am i going crazy
uh. whales
I’m going to bite them both
i hope no one takes my kirk characterizations too seriously most of the time they’re diary comics i spirkify. this one is
thinking abt kirk and spock paralleling actual married couples again
Spock for the weird headcanons!
What they smell like: Copper and cinnamon and Vulcan tea
How they sleep (sleeping position, schedule, etc): Flat on his back for five hours a night
What music they enjoy: Folk music and Vulcan stuff
How much time they spend getting ready every morning: Precisely 13.42 minutes, barring interruption
Their favorite thing to collect: Scientific models and slime molds
Left or right-handed: Left-handed
Religion (if any): I think Spock is actually very religious by human standards, it’s just that religion works a little differently for Vulcans. They don’t have to believe in some higher being they don’t know because they know they have a katra and they know what happens to it when they die. So I guess I’d say he doesn’t think of himself as religious but he appears religious to an outside viewer
Favorite sport: Suus Mahna
Favorite touristy thing to do when traveling (museums, local food, sightseeing, etc): Taking scientific readings of every interesting thing
Favorite kind of weather: Hot and dry and sunny for earth, cool and hazy for Vulcan (these are the same weather conditions, just the comparative difference)
A weird/obscure fear they have: This isn’t really weird at all but he’s terrified of losing control. Not just of his emotions, but of his life
The carnival/arcade game they always win without fail:That sledgehammer thingy! He’s flawless at calculating force and strong enough to do it
send me a character and I’ll make you one of these
Imagine that Vulcan children don't lose teeth. Imagine the chaos that ensues when spock loses his first tooth
And Sarek freaking out (in a logical way) because he doesn’t know what is happening and Amanda like “Adun, no, you don’t have to call a healer, Spock is ok. No, he’s not in danger. Yes, that’s completely normal. Sarek… please, sit down and listen to me… that tooth cannot be reimplanted. Yes, he will lose all his teeth and I don’t want to have this conversation every time, ok?”
#tfw ur son is just fucking dropping bones out of his mouth#like they’re just falling loose onto the floor#tfw when your child is just fucking decomposing and your alien wife is having a laugh
#Help I married a space orc
i love in fics where kirk discovers he can communicate telepathically with spock because of their bond and then he’s just excitedly screaming random ass thoughts at spock all day and spock just gives him a pained look and thinks like “jim, ashayam, please there is no need to shout i can hear you”
my absolute favourite thing about the kirk and spock dynamic is that the whole time you’re watching the show spock is gaslighting you into thinking that kirk is this loose canon and spock is paragon of logic keeping his captain on the straight and narrow when its very clearly the other way round. aside from being turned on by everyone and fighting like an old-timey boxer…. kirk is just like.. quite a logical, stable guy. like yeah he rules with his emotions but he’s rarely reckless or erratic, even in situations of immense pressure he’s always calm and measured. sure kirk is unhinged and insane, but we knew that right off the bat. spock on the other hand tries to hide how insanely balls to the walls crazy he is by standing next to jim and hiding all his derangement with logic. i think the reason bones beefs with spock so much because he is the only one who has noticed that spock is an absolutely unhinged individual. (jim is too busy doodling <3 mr jim spock <3 all over his briefings to notice)
The mistake people make is discounting the vital importance of Dr. McCoy to the Kirk/Spock dynamic. They make the mistake of thinking Jim and Spock are 'logic vs. emotion'. That is dead wrong.
Spock and DR. MCCOY are 'logic vs. emotion'. Kirk is the brilliantly pragmatic, levelheaded person who is making the choice (or refusing to make the choice) between them. Spock and McCoy are the metaphorical angel and devil on Kirk's shoulders, constantly sniping at each other. Except in this metaphor, they both think they are the angel. THAT is their dynamic.
Spock and McCoy will spout ideals for days, but Kirk is the one who tells them when enough is enough, he's made his decision. Sometimes he sides with Spock, sometimes he sides with Bones, sometimes he makes his own way with a little of both. Kirk is incredible at his job, is brilliant at making the best plan for any situation. Which means sometimes he tells Spock that going by logic is the wrong way to finish their mission- and when he does that, 90% of the time he's RIGHT.
Of course Spock is starry-eyed over Kirk; Kirk's not the wildly emotional one, that's Bones. Spock can dismiss Bones because of how often Bones is wrong. But Kirk sometimes picks emotions over logic...and is as successful as he is when he picks logic. He's standing there in the ashes of Vulcan's insistence that logic is the only way wearing a laurel wreath and holding a winners trophy. Spock is fucking RIVETED.
can we talk about spock responding to "live long and prosper spock" with "I will do neither"??? straight up pulling "I am killing myself after this interaction is over". dramatic bitch. and he meant it too
Spock's bitchy eyebrow raise is great wonderful perfect flawless but I think we're sleeping on Kirk's bitchy little shrug
