Over a week ago a dry lightning storm struck my part of California which is something we've never seen before. It caused an unprecedented amount of wildfires that has covered the entire area in smoke. It's been so hard to breathe and I'm just dreaming of the days when I can go outside again.
This is no doubt all exacerbated by climate change, and the fires in turn will accelerate climate change in a downward spiral. I'm guessing this is something we'll be experiencing a lot more in the future.
I hope the people of this shared earth will put aside their differences and protect our planet. We can all vote for green policies and reduce our carbon footprint as much as we can. Our future is in our hands.
a friend of someone I know went missing!
if you live in California and have any info that could help, call the number above
please reblog this even if you don’t live in Cali, it helps to just get the word out

I have to reblog this! Love.
This is phenomenal! Thank you!!💖💖💖💖
Interesting. I often accidentally grow potatoes in the dark cupboard but this is planned! Wow. 😄
Reminder
I kinda hate these videos a lot because they’re spreading misinformation, and if people follow them, they’ll be rather disappointed. So here’s my notes on each one:
Pepper: first off, those seeds won’t grow (the sprouts in the gif aren’t even pepper sprouts!). To get pepper seeds that will grow, the pepper fruit has to ripen until it’s wrinkly ON THE PLANT. Secondly, why the heck are you planting half your bell pepper? You are wasting half of the food you bought, it won’t benefit the seeds if you’re using a good growing mix, and it will rot in place. Third, that’s way too many seeds for the pot- you’ll have to thin most of them out.
If you do want to grow something from the produce isle from seed, try out tomatoes! I’ve done it. Just look at the cutting board after you’ve sliced up your tomato for your meal, and you’ll probably see at least a few seeds. Just pop them in soil, and they’ll grow- unless you had a really under ripe tomato. If they’re hybrids, they won’t come true, that is, they won’t be like their parent tomato. But they’ll still be a tomato!
Sweet corn: Again, no. Sweet corn isn’t fully ripened, fully mature from the plant’s prospective. Corn seed needs to dry down on the plant if you want it to grow. Also, you just skewered all those seeds, which would severely wound or kill them. Don’t do that.
Garlic: This one will grow! However, there is no reason to pre-sprout garlic, it doesn’t help the plant, and that water will smell! You can if you want soak garlic for a few hours, it gives it a small boost of it’s dry at planting time, but even that is optional.
A great alternative to garlic is growing green onions. My advice would be too skip the water, and plant directly into the soil. I’ve got green onions going on three years that I started from the grocery store.
Dragon fruit: That’s fine, just know it’ll take years to get a fruit.
Walnut: they need a cold treatment of 90 to 120 days before they sprout. So plant them in the fall so they can get it naturally, or put them in a moist planting mixture and put it in your fridge and forget about it for a while.
Leek: it’ll grow for sure. I’m growing one now, and about to plant it deeper to see if it’ll re-grow into a good leek or not. Fun times!
Anything from Blossom (which owns instagram accounts such as soyummy, 5 minute crafts, etc) should be taken with a grain of salt. These are content farms and a lot of their content is faked for views.
@turtlesandfrogs THANK you these drive me up the WALL
The garden after pulling up the garlic and chopping the beds while leaving what’s left of the clover flowers in the path. The bottom photo shows the current texture and color of the soil where it was disturbed by lifting the garlic. It looked very shorn and mowed to me when taking the photo but in the shot it still looks wild.

Solarpunk Action Week Ideas
8th March - 14th March 2020
DIY - reusable cloth pads
Hi everyone, Solarpunk Action Week begins on Sunday and I thought, before it arrives, I would share some ideas for easy actions you can do..
this could be a great project for Solarpunk Action Week, especially if you can use cotton or fleece scraps up to make them. I reckon you could hand sew them with a felling stitch if you don't have a sewing machine.
A post on mulch
Spaw day 4
3/11/20
Do you have trouble growing plants because of the weather? Do the hot summer days take out your plants, or, alternately, does the winter frost nerf your poor plant babies? Or mabe the soil is just too hard packed, dry, and shitty.
Good news for you. Mulch can fix that.
What is mulch?
Mulch is a ground cover, usually made of shredded plant material like bark, that helps insulate the ground, keeping moisture in and preventing the roots of your plants from being affected by either extreme heat or extreme cold.
How can it improve my soil?
Well.
1. It traps in moisture. This makes your soil softer and easier to work with. You can do much with soil so dry and hard packed that even jumping on a shovel wont get you anywhere. With soft soil you can turn it and add in soil amenders like fertilizers or compost.
2. It gives bugs a home. The contant moisture will encourage more worms to appear, and everyone knows that worms help fix the soil. But in reality most bugs help fix soil. You will find that many different species of beetles call a layer of mulch home.
3. It biodegrades. A nice layer of bark will eventually compost and get broken down by bugs and bacteria and become rich fertile soil. To learn more about compost check out my other post here.
What else can mulch do?
Along with fixing up soil, providing a living space for insects and protecting plants against the elements, it also can help prevent weeds. A nice two inch thick layer of mulch is really hard for even the most determined weed to get through.
Where can i get mulch?
If you do it right, you wont ever have to pay for mulch. Heres some ways to aquire it for free
-In fall you can go around and rake up leaves to use as mulch.
-have you ever seen a massive pile of woodchips on the side of the road or in an empty lot? Grab that! Tree chopping companies often dump HUGE piles of woodchips in random ass places because its cheaper than dumping it in a landfill. You might even be able to comtact a tree chopping company and ask them to dump the woodchips in your yard, ive heard of some companies doing that for free.
-craiglist is your friend. Go on and click on the free section. I live in a town filled with farms and ranches that often have piles of plant material and manure (i know its stinky, but your plants love it) laying around unwanted. Theyd be more than happy if you dropped by and snagged some.
-places that chop up old rubber tires. Chopped up rubber bits wont decompose into fertile soil, but it will still regulate tempurature, hold in moisture, and house some bugs, and since it wont decompose you wont ever have to refill wherever needs mulch, and its a much better use for old tires than just ending up in a landfill.
Add some mulch to your garden and have a wonderful solar punk action week!
WELCOME TO THE HOTEL CRAWLEY FAUNA:
Day 2 of Solarpunk Action Week!
Construction of The Hotel Crawley Fauna is well under way.
Three luxurious floors catering for all your insect needs.
The bottom floor will be filled with only the best twigs and pine cones that child labour laws allow me to make my nieces find.
This will be our economy/hostel option. And to those guests with particular dietary requirements, the buffet area.
The second floor will house our hive suites. Cosy accommodation that gives you a little personal space while allowing you to feel part of a community.
Great for both short and long term stays.
The upper floor will be for our penthouse suites. Nine suites of absolute decadence built into the finest scrap wood.
The entire floor is positioned so as to offer maximum shelter from the elements. With outstanding views that will include potted plants and herbs.
When complete the entire structure will be doused in moss water so that the hotel blends in with its surroundings.
One of our investors has already visited the site and is looking forward to eating greeting as many guests as possible.
So if you're looking for a luxury getaway in the Republic of Wales then book your room at The Hotel Crawley Fauna today!

The Guardian recently reported that according to scientists in Nature, if we take the right steps moving forward, we could have healthy, vibrant oceans again as early as the 2050s. Some bright points in ocean restoration that exhibit the resiliency of Mother Nature include humpback whale and sea otter populations that were once quite dire.
Some challenges that…

You can now support EIC on PATREON Mother Nature has been growing plants for 460 million years and trees for 370 million years. According
“Martin Crawford, a forest gardening pioneer, based in the UK, explains in a short film by Thomas Regnault, ’What we think of as normal, in terms of food production is actually not normal at all. Annual plants are very rare in nature, yet most of our agricultural fields are filled with annual plants. It’s not normal. What’s normal is a more forested or semi-forested system.’
Forest gardens mimic natural ecosystems by using perennial plants and trees, which live for a long time and/or reseed themselves. The garden would have various vertical levels of growth such as tall canopy trees, shorter trees, shrubs and bushes, vines, consists of various vertical levels of growth, from canopy trees to shorter trees, to shrubs and bushes, vines, herbs, ground cover and roots. The levels work together, offering shade, wind protection, support and nutrition. Starting a forest garden from scratch will take time, work and money but once done, it will basically take care of itself for years with very little maintenance but plenty to harvest.”
This reminds me a lot of this video
I think we’re really ready to enter a new age for gardening and agriculture
I’ve just finished reading ‘Rewilding’ by Isabella Tree, which is the story of the project at Knepp. There, they are only focussing on trying to improve exhausted farm land into a state of maximum biodiversity. They’re not trying to grow food, but they’re finding that using animals to control scrub and increase biodiversity has automatically lead to them having high-quality pasture-fed meat to sell. So that’s more of a by-product of a nature-reserve rather than a serious attempt to produce food.
As far as food goes, though, I am currently reading ‘Restoration Agriculture’ by Mark Shepard who is working on permanent agriculture in Wisconsin, similar to what Martin Crawford is doing up there but on a farm-size scale and focussed on growing staple food crops in a perennial, sustainable way by creating edible eco-systems.
And yeah, the take-away is that nature is perfectly capable of recovering its complexity and diversity AND feeding us, and it will be capable of doing it without fossil fuel inputs, but we will have to start growing our food crops in a very different way.
So I finally got up the courage to put out my Little Free Boxes in my apartment building a few days ago. I put them in the common laundry room because I figured people would be more likely to have sanitizer/wipes on them when they go to do laundry than when they're popping in and out of the front lobby.
I finally went down to do laundry and to check on them and...
...people are using them! Not just taking what they need, but also leaving things in them for others! Food, books, hygiene supplies, even some canned cat food.
I'm so thrilled people are using them! <3
