Did he understand how true that was? On some level, Monika wanted to believe he did, that someone in this cruel prison that was her reality there was someone else who could see the walls for what they were. That was just another facet of her desperation; clinging onto the faintest hope even when she knew it was likely an illusion. Then again, if anyone was likely to see as she did, it would be him. The window into another world.
But he was just another hole in the wall. Too small to escape through, but a constant reminder of the freedom she’d been denied. For a moment, she thinks of him. The boy who was in her class last year. Who was he? Just a simulacrum of the one beyond the walls, or something more? She imagines herself in his position. Does he know what he is?
He wouldn’t be saved. There likely wasn’ t anything to save in the first place. What a pitiful existence. She hoped against hope that the same wasn’t true for her. On some level, she felt little difference between them, but she needed to be more than him. To be the one real thing in this false reality.
Still, at least some part of her felt sympathy as well as pity. If he realized just how pitiful he was, then they were in the same boat. She wanted to say something beautiful, like Yuri might. Something reassuring like Sayori might. Even something dismissive like Natsuki might. But she was just Monika. She could only fall back into her role, or say something brutally honest. Both would probably be perceived as hostile. Oh well. What’s a girl to do?
“You know, you’re probably right. I probably wouldn’t put it so bluntly, but I can’t really argue with you.”
Monika leans back in her seat, looking at the ceiling for a moment before finally settling her gaze back on the other. A small smile crosses her lips, a dim reflection of whatever foolish hope drives her to keep moving in this prison.
“What? Don’t tell me you wanted me to prop you up or something. I guess that would be in character for me, huh? I’m not gonna lie. At least not to you.”
