Simone de Beauvoir suggests that men have created the “myth of women”, wherein a woman’s “true” image is reflected in their romanticised notion of what a woman should be. I think we can apply this to mental health as well. For as long as we romanticise mental illness, we exile people whose struggles do not fit in with our myth of mental illness.

Being BPD is edgy until that person displays a symptom that’s honest to the horrific nature of the illness. Bipolar is fun until the mania ends up with someone almost dead because they lost control. Depression is beautiful until the depressed person cannot do what people desire of them.

The perpetuation of this false narrative only works to harm the reality of being unwell, and only allows people to struggle for as long as they can remain beautiful and docile within this myth.

nah, people need their time and space for a multitude of reasons. i’m not the centre of anyone’s universe but my own, so if people need to remove themselves from my orbit for a while, whilst they do what they need to do, i’ll embrace that. yes, it may hurt, and break my trust a bit. but people come and go, go and come back, it’s the natural ebb and flow of life. to think we remain linear, that we will all stay in the same place both physically and mentally, doesn’t allow growth, and sometimes departing is needed for growth, and you can return when ready.
