TW: domestic violence, drugs, addiction
when my mom gave us up when I was 9 years old (my sister 7, and my brother 6) it was an act of true love. my dad was on the run for violating his parole after a stay for DV (my mom and me and my siblings were beat with objects and choked out with a telephone cord when i tried to call 911). we couldn’t risk being in trouble for harboring him if he came back to the house, and i think my mom feared for our safety a little. this was surprising because i don’t remember her interference a lot during our beatings. we were staying at friends while our home was being staked out. the social worker came there to take us. my mom loved us enough to look in the mirror and be brutally honest with herself about her addiction. it is sad she was never given enough to get out of the hole of addiction but she couldn’t allow herself to be the cause of our pain any longer. i don’t know if she considered we might be angry with her about it for a very long time possibly forever, and i don’t know if she thought about the abuse we might encounter in the system. but i know she couldn’t stand to be the one anymore.
i was infinitely bugged by her lack of accountability, she wanted me to be happy she made this sacrifice. or at least to acknowledge it. i get it now, even if she were still alive i wouldn’t let her know this until i felt she took accountability tho. my father, showed up to family visits for a couple of years after placement and he disappeared. i believe he’s alive still. somewhere i feel nothing for him.

watching people on this post give the absolute worst advice about photos at protests is why I play avoid-the-camera so diligently and I am prepared to smash cameras at all times
part of my role is going to people and gently saying "hey please stop taking photos of people without their consent. that can be dangerous for the people in the photos and you were asked not to at the start of the rally/march" and I have had people threaten to punch me over it so........
just stop taking photos. I don't care if they're "just for you" or if you "plan to redact them" you have no idea what situation someone is in and your photos will never be secure. if you want to take a photo just ask people in it first.
and of course they're always like "well what about those people taking photos" and I explain that "those people are known to our community and know who does and doesn't want a photo. people have already consented or not consented at past events to that person's photos and they know this" or "thanks for pointing that out I will talk to them too because they also should not be taking photos." this also, of course, does not solve the conflict and they continue taking photos anyways.
I have my own tactics for stopping photos when someone refuses that don't involve smashing cameras but they tend to escalate things anyways.
just stop. I'm so tired. just stop.
ALSO, JUST FOR THE RECORD!!!! If you are refusing to stop taking photos of people you look like a cop.
And, for the record, a lot of you have your phones set to automatically store photos in the cloud, where the fourth amendments gets... fuzzy.
You also have no assurance that your camera/phone and the data on it won't be taken by a cop.
The good news is that if you keep your phone locked with a pass code, they can't force you to unlock it. But if it's biometric (fingerprint or retina) they can force you to unlock it.
