In my Phantom of the Archives AU, the End doesn't allow death to be so easily and completely avoided, this means that when Jonah takes a new body, part of the face is automatically marked by death. He has found a way to extend his life, but there will always be an indicator of its unnatural nature. In the case of my design, this 'mark' is gaunt, skeletal scarring branching out from one of his (original) eyes, the moment they are placed in new sockets. That's why Elias wears the mask.

The Phantom is, of course, Jonah.
