Relatedly, this is one of my pet peeves about people who use shock humour

Shock humour only works because there's a high risk of failure. The idea is that you are saying something socially shocking - something that your audience knows is "wrong" to say. It winds your audience's emotions up tight, like a spring, so that they have to 'release' into a response.

You're hoping that response will be laughter, to break the tension. Often it is. The "I cannot believe you just said that" reaction. A famous internet example is "I also choose this guy's dead wife".

But, it very well might unwind the other way, into visceral rejection, and you have to be okay with that. It was only funny because of the risk of failure! You can't throw a fit about it if it does, in fact, fail

there will never be anything as funny as the mutual disbelief between long form and short form fic writers about each other's style.

short form writers look at people writing 100k+ fics as though this is some sort of talent given as part of a fae bargain, that the commitment required shows some sort of ungodly mental fortitude.

meanwhile long form writers look at people writing 1000 word one shots like god I would cut off my left nipple to be able to say anything concisely. i would love to play with multiple ideas. free me from the shackles of this child I have birthed. i love them but I now must take them to t-ball and doctor's appointments and they're going to destroy everything I own.

I need a polite and effective way to say "hey your heart is truly in the right place and your anger is often righteous but I think sometimes you’re getting recreationally mad about things that are frankly not worth the amount of energy you’re spending on them, and every time you do this you're driving yourself slightly more insane with nothing to show for it," and then I need a way to broadcast that message through a loudspeaker to roughly 30,000 people at once, and THEN I need a time machine to send that message to my past self lol. and maybe a second time machine in case past me tries to be clever and sabotage the version of me who comes through the first time machine

After having the baby last April I cut a couple of my maternity leggings into shorts and wore them through the summer. Held onto them to donate with the next batch of stuff that I took to the women's shelter but now it's summer again and GUESS WHAT these are the only shorts that make my butt look the way it deserves. Seriously considering buying more maternity pants just to cut them into shorts like these so I don't have to wash the same two pair every day 😆

Chapter 8

The thought made her heart ramp and her stomach twist, like when Nate had first been courting her and she'd thought it would only be a matter of time before he realized he wasn't as head over heels for her as he'd thought. His continued, unbridled enthusiasm for her had made the feeling eventually go away. She wasn't sure what would help with it now. 

This was a strange relationship. She knew that. And she knew that if anyone found out about it, she wouldn't be able to explain it satisfactorily. She couldn't really even explain to herself in a way that made any kind of logical sense why she liked being watched by someone she didn't know, or why she wouldn't be interested in having a simpler relationship with someone she could actually spend time with.  

And she didn't understand why it had been making her feel this way lately either.

Here's what I think is the intro to Long Time Running Chapter 19. It's a letter from Jack to Nora, written while he was stationed in Anchorage. Nice to work on the fic now that @maccreadyweek has been wrapped up for a bit; now I've got to follow up on Chapter 18 which was a mammoth 20k chapter (!!!) I wrote this letter with my non-dominant hand, then scanned the paper and digitally aged it a bit. I will upload this to AO3 with alt text on the images; hopefully it works well for both mobile and desktop.

it is genuinely bewildering to me that adult human beings do not know this but if you are mean to people they will not like you. like tbh they are probably also not going to like you if you are mean to other people but they are definitely not going to like you if you are mean to them. it doesn’t matter if you are funny or if you can use r/aita rules to prove that you are in the right. people simply do not enjoy being treated like shit.
