Why did Mob change how he feels about using his powers on other people? He feels so strongly early on that he'd rather let Teru strangle him to death than use his powers, but from the Claw arc onwards he's just... okay with it. I can't remember any reason he did such a 180 but I don't want to believe ONE would screw up like that
mob never wants to use his powers on other people. he doesnāt get okay with it. from the beginning, his rule has always been ādonāt point it at a person.ā itās just that over the course of the story, heās forced to make exceptions for the sake of protecting others.
he let teru strangle him because he associated āusing psychic power on other peopleā withĀ āaccidentally unleashing ???% and hurting ritsu that one time,ā and the latter was such an unbearable memory that heād do anything to avoid reliving that. unfortunately, it backfired, because getting knocked out by an enemy is exactly what it takes to trigger ???%ā¦ so once he understands that, mob has an incentive to use psychic power at least for self-defense, if absolutely necessary. but heās still very reluctant to use his powers on a human even for that purpose, as we can see in chapter 59 when bullies confront him.
then, the claw arc. mob sure uses his psychic power on a lot of people during the claw arc. but iād say those are all exceptions. mobās rule is stillĀ ādonāt point it at a person,ā but if you want him to make an exception and point it at a person, itās easy: justĀ kidnap ritsu. threatening the safety of his family automatically puts mob in fight mode. so mob smashes people through walls as necessary in his pursuit of ritsu. then he gets reunited with ritsu! that automatically takes him out of fight mode, so much so that heās really freaking out about being pressured to use his power on a person (ishiguro) so they can escape. he has ritsu right there with him, so thereās no longer an urgent enough reason to fight. his reluctance is so strong that his explosion meter ticks up rapidly and heās about to 100% killing intent when reigen tells him that itās ok to not want to fight; i.e. that heās no longer obligated to make more exceptions to his rule. and mob is so incredibly relieved at the lifting of the burden on him that he does his 100% gratitude and lets reigen take care of it. mob understood that someone had to fight right then, but he desperately wanted it to not be him. why? because he would have lost control and regretted it immensely (i.e. the narrowly avoided 100% killing intent.)
the next time mob attacks someone with psychic power takes place in that asagiri-mogami brainworld, right? itās a world where he has no psychic power and hasnāt even met reigen (the one who told him not to use psychic power on people). but even then, after 6 months of torment at the hands of asagiri minori, when he is suddenly granted psychic powers and has minori at his mercy, and donāt forget he doesnāt even consciously have his rule in this world, what does he decide to do? he asks her to apologize. this is the person who has made his school life a living hell for half a year, and heās not happy about it, make no mistakeā but even then, he doesnāt use his power on her. thatās how deeply his rule is ingrained in him.
then the marathon and stuff happens and mob comes home to theĀ āfuseā shou kindly lit for him. shou understood mobās relationship with his rule at first glance, it seems, because by putting ritsu (and mobās parents) in (apparent) danger, mob is sent directly into fight mode. that means the whole thing where he bounces electric guy off buildings and punches old muscle guy in the face until he passes out, thatās all just an exception. because ritsu is in danger. when mob challenged those guys looting a convenience store, that was also an exception, since he was still in fight mode. he remained in fight mode right up until he was reunited with ritsu, at which point he instantly went back to normal mode.Ā
by that point, mob had grown a lot compared to early in the story. he probably came to the logical conclusion that with great power comes great responsibility. so although he was no longer in fight mode, he went to confront touichirou; not because he wanted to fight him, but because he knew his own defense was high enough that he could safely talk to him. on the way, he defeated serizawa WITH THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP (the most non-fighting way anyone can possibly be defeated). even when he got there just in time to prevent touichirou from landing a huge attack on shou, mobās actions were purely defensive. he tried to talk down the man who had toppled the cityās buildings like dominoes. he used only the power of his words for as long as it took him to realize that touichirou couldnāt be swayed by that alone. and even then, his first psychic attack on touichirou is a bind. thatās the most defensive maneuver that can technically count as offense. he was so reluctant to fight, EVEN THEN, that it took getting beaten to near-immobility and reigenās apparent death (!!!) before mob even started getting sorta serious with his attacks. and up to the very very end of the fight, he truly didnāt want to hurt touichirou, despite knowing firsthand how much pain that man had caused to others.Ā
so basicallyā¦ mob never gets comfortable with the idea of hurting other people his with psychic power. heās a pacifist. he just had to make some exceptions. circumstance demanded it.
