A/N: here’s the ending. Pretty cool. Thanks to all who actually read through all of these, I really appreciate it. Currently working on a sequel, and honestly I’m more excited about that one. But yeah here’s the finale of Mirror Effect- comments are appreciated and maybe send me questions and/or requests or just like talk to me. Sometimes I have good jokes ;)
Klaus's eyes were immediately drawn to the wings when they entered the room. Kayla's back was to him, and from behind, she looked like an avenging angel, the type the Bible always talks about. Razor was awake and moving slowly towards Kayla, trying to intimidate her. She held two golden chains at her sides- man, did that look badass. Five was frantically looking around the room, turning to Klaus with wide eyes "Where's Christina?" He mouthed. Klaus shrugged in response.
Diego stood in front of him, and Klaus saw his shoulders tense up. He was looking at where Emma lay, unconscious.
Klaus whispered to his two brothers, "What's the game plan?"
"Diego take the right, try to stay hidden. Klaus go left, distract him. I'm going up behind-" Five was interrupted by a voice that sounded like a bear that could speak English.
Razor was now screaming at Kayla, and charged, and Diego instinctively threw a knife, and muttered, "Fuck the plan."
He roared in pain, now fully aware of their presence. Man, was he pissed.
"I am going to tear you limb from limb!"
Five started forward, enveloped in blue sparks, and then popped up behind Razor.
Razor whipped around, swinging for Five, but missed when he materialized to Razor's left.
Kayla seemed to take the hint of Five acting as a distraction, and threw a chain, wrapping it around Razor's neck. She pulled tight, and that subdued him a bit, cutting off some of his air supply.
"Give me the other chain!" Klaus went to grab the other, but she moved away a bit.
"Don't touch that, its poisonous."
Diego's knife whizzed by Klaus's head, sticking in between Razor's shoulder blades. He roared again in pain, twisting in the chain, but unable to release himself.
"We need to calm him down or knock him out!" Kayla called out to the brothers, but she was starting to lose her footing and Razor was beginning to rise up a bit.
Klaus was looking around the room, but he felt a presence behind him. Fearing another Gas Mask Man, he whipped around, ready to defend himself, but instead he saw a frail, brown haired woman. Instinctively he knew she was a ghost, mainly because there was something ethereal about her and the three gashes across her throat. Just by looking at her, he knew she died a violent death, but she wasn't wailing like the rest of the tormented souls did.
He watched her, disturbed by her presence, and she moved towards Razor. She reached a hand up to him and frowned when his arm moved through her.
"Who the hell are you?" he asked.
The woman turned to him, and gave him a sad smile. "This is my son." She had a bit of an accent, but he couldn't place from where. Maybe Turkish?
"Yeah well your son is trying to kill us, ma'am."
She didn't like that, "He is confused. He does not mean it."
"I wouldn't be here if i did not have that intention."
Okay... Klaus thought. He had practiced telekinesis with his brother, Ben. He wasn't a pro at it, but hopefully this one time it would work.
He focused on the spirit, and tried to get his heart beating faster and faster. Then he felt something click, and then the woman turned to this incorporeal blue, which was his sign that it had worked.
He held out his arms, centering his focus on the woman, and watched as she walked to Razor. The beast seemed to calm a bit, seeing his mother, but then he turned frantic.
"What the fuck? How are you here?" He was still much larger than the woman, but he fell to the floor, scooting back away from her.
"I am very, VERY disappointed in you. I did NOT raise you like this. You should be ashamed. Rezalet!"
He heard Kayla curse under her breath. Diego stared at the woman, still holding a knife in the air mid-throw. Five even seemed confused.
Even more surprising was that Razor began to cry, "I am sorry Mother. I- s-sorry." He was basically choking on his words, and he began to shrink down to normal size. The chain fell off his normal sized neck, and Max curled in on himself, sobbing.
Kayla looked at Klaus, wide-eyed, and then turned to a drawer, pulling out a syringe full of whitish liquid. Klaus released the woman's spirit, and she dissolved back into nothingness. Kayla then slowly approached Max, and once she was close enough, she stuck the syringe into his neck, and he slumped to his side- knocked out.
With the immediate danger snuffed out, Five was allowed to go into panic mode.
"Where the fuck is she?" He started, getting into Kayla's face. She calmed retracted the wings and coiled the chains around her palms, stuffing them behind her into her shirt. "I said: where is she?" He was getting increasingly angrier, a side-affect of worrying.
"I don't know. He hit her, and she went through a window."
"She went through the window?!" He raced to the shattered glass, looking down at the ground.
Kayla sighed, "Not that window, Brendan got a face full of that. She opened a portal somewhere and did her disappearing act before she shattered her spine on the wall." She moved towards Matthew, not showing the same level of panic Five was. "She'll turn up soon."
Diego looked over to Max from where he was crouched over Emma, "What do we do with him?"
Klaus joked, "Maybe the Commissioner would like a new, emotionally disturbed puppy."
Kayla looked at him, her face showing no emotion, "He invaded my house, attacked my friends, and threw the kindness i showed him back into my face. And i heard the Commissioner is a dog person anyway."
As if speaking of the Commissioner was some sort of summoning, outside sounded like a cavalry of police sirens. A speaker sounded "Maximus Battle, come out with your hands raised. You are under arrest for murder in the first degree."
Kayla went to the shattered window, "You're a tad late, boys. Come on in, he's knocked out!" She yelled down to them.
Five heard the front door open, but only heard one pair of footsteps clamoring up the steps. Then, Christina burst in, and immediately she flung herself at him. He held onto her tightly, and then pulled back a bit, "Where did you go?"
She looked up at him, "Popped into SWAT offices, told them bad shit was going on here, and promptly passed out from a concussion. They just brought me back here."
He gently cradled her head into his chest, heartbeat slowing since his initial panic was now settled.
A SWAT team entered, guns drawn and pointed at Max. A medical team entered next, and it took a team of EMTs to move him from the ground onto a gurney-which didn't look like it would hold him.
About an hour later, there was a black garbage bag duct taped to the shattered window. Christina found Brendan passed out on the steps leading up to the second floor, so it seemed like he must've hit his head but the adrenaline kept him going for a few more minutes. He was strange like that. Emma and Matthew had woken up a bit after police completed their investigation of the house and finally left. Christina and Kayla shoved Matthew and Brendan into one of the guest rooms, leaving them there to "sleep it off".
Diego now stood in Emma's room, pacing while she laid in bed. She watched him, moving back and forth.
"So why the fuck did you leave?" She was very pissed at the moment.
He was silent for a minute, seeming to think out his answer. "Listen, I'm sorry-"
"That's not what I asked. Why did you fucking leave?"
"Because I got scared." He seemed genuinely upset. "I was scared that I fucked things up."
"You said I reminded you of your ex. That's fucked up."
"And I shouldn't have said that. You are such a strong, independent woman. You are exactly what I want to be with. But I'm afraid that what I do might hurt you in some way..."
She thought over the words, "You mean the crime-fighting, Batman type of shit? Bro, I can shoot fire out of my hands. I think I'm okay."
"But I've killed people..."
"So that...doesn't bother you?"
"If you don't compare me to your ex again, then we're good."
He gave her a lop sided smile.
They spent the rest of the night in her room, really not doing much. Emma was still dizzy from hitting her head so hard before. She eventually fell asleep, curled up next to him, and boy, did he like that.
The next morning, Klaus, Kayla, Emma, Diego, Five, Christina, Matthew, and Brendan sat in the kitchen. The Jersey supers were still pretty banged up from their encounter with Max, but they were all talking and smiling.
"...so he was there at some rave, and I still love to hold it over his head that the perfect Number One took LSD and hooked up with a furry-chick." Klaus was finished up his story, and everyone was howling at the end.
"Speaking of, there's another underground tonight if you all want to go?" Emma asked.
"Are you sure you're okay to go?" Diego gently grabbed her hand.
"Bitch, who do you think I am?" she playfully threw his hand off of hers.
"Are you sure Em? I don't think that's safe..." Christina turned out to be the voice of reason in the group.
"But i wanna get druuuunk..." Emma drawled out the words, "But okay Mom, if you say so."
"Mooooom, can I get drunk instead?" Klaus nudged Kayla with his arm.
"Sure, just don't hook up with some ghost-" She was cut off by the doorbell, which sounded like the gong of a church bell. Kayla got up to answer the door, and soon returned, followed by a large man in sunglasses and a baseball cap which read "NYPD". He had a wonderful chevron mustache. He was then followed by two other officers.
Brendan immediately got up from the table, the movement making him slightly dizzy, but he moved to shake the man's hand, "Hello Commissioner, what brings you by?"
The man removed his sunglasses, and with piercing blue eyes he studied the room.
"I wanted to thank you all for bringing Mr. Battle into custody." He moved around the table, shaking each hand.
Klaus hung onto his hand, "Mr. Commissioner, what an honor to meet you! Such a big fan! You must be so proud of your teams, especially these lovely ladies based in New Jersey!"
The Commissioner gave Klaus a small smile, obviously weirded out by his demeanor. "Thank you, Seance."
"Oh please, call me Klaus. And I would love to learn your name over coffee sometime.." He gave him a large grin, which he was rewarded with a warning "Klaus" from Kayla. He let go of the Commissioner's hand, and he retreated back to where Kayla stood, next to the kitchen island.
Obviously uncomfortable, the Commissioner cleared his throat, and then said "Again, thank you all for your contributions to the case, but I was reviewing one of my officer's field report and he had stated that Maximus had murdered a woman and a man outside of your home. No bodies were recovered though. Why is that?"
Christina's jaw dropped, "That's not possible, I pronounced them dead at the scene. I called your Medical Examiner's office. I-I watched some men come and remove the bodies from the scene... and they took the car..." Her eyes grew wide and she looked between Emma and Kayla.
"Commissioner, did the ME's office receive that call?" Five asked as he put an arm around Christina.
"No call was reported by that office. Miss Dahlia, may I ask for a description of the men that you saw recover the bodies?"
Christina's hands were shaking furiously. "They-um- they had lab coats on. And they had a white van..."
The Commissioner moved a kitchen chair across from her and sat down. "Where were you when you saw them?" He spoke to her in a soothing tone.
"I was w-walking past the living room, and I-I looked outside. It was around... 12:00 I think?" She was on the verge of tears, fearing the worst.
"How many of them were there?"
"Three. Two men, one woman. She had, I think, blonde hair. The two men had brown."
"Good, good. We will look into this more. You did nothing wrong Miss Dahlia, you followed procedure." The Commissioner rose, "We will be in contact in case there is any more information." He then turned to Kayla, who looked very pale, "Your phones may have been compromised." He muttered to her, and promptly the three officers left.
The room was still, but one question still remained: were the scientists in the city? The answer seemed the affect Christina the worst; she was now full-on sobbing, her body trembling. Five was making shushing noises and rubbing her lower back, trying to calm her calamity. For once, there seemed to be nothing to do. Whoever these people were, they knew what they were doing. They knew about their colleagues deaths and promptly cleaned the scene. It was also unlikely that they would return for Max to continue being a test subject.
Klaus watched Kayla pace back and forth in the kitchen, the tension radiating off of her. Diego looked like he needed to cut someone.
It was Emma who finally spoke, "We shouldn't have killed those scientists."
Killed... the word resounded in Klaus's head.
"What if I summoned them?"
All heads turned to him, even Christina's red, puffy eyes seemed to question him.
"You can summon ghosts?" Matthew asked, obviously confused since he didn't see Max's mother's soul before.
Klaus gave a small smile, "Yeah, haven't done it in a while though. It's also going to be difficult if they don't want to step forward."
"It's worth a shot." Kayla said, her face grim. Klaus nodded at her.
It was dusk, and the group sat around the kitchen table. Who knew tables were so multi-purpose? Klaus and Kayla found a Ouija board earlier to help Klaus have some control over the spirits. When they brought it home they were met by Emma's surprised laughter and Christina donning a cross around her neck. Brendan had opted to spectate and make sure nothing happened; Klaus was about to tell him that metal can't stop angry ghosts but he let him live in that fantasy instead.
They now crowded around the table, hands conjoined. Emma insisted on lighting a few candles to "set the mood".
"Okay, so a few rules: don't disconnect hands- it distracts me. Don't get freaked if I talk to myself or someone not in this room. You are allowed to freak out if my voice changes. If my eyes roll into the back of my head, call an ambulance." He smiled brightly towards the group.
"If your head starts turning, I will not hesitate to torch you." Emma said, and then looked around at everyone, "What? That shit isn't healthy."
Five looked over at Christina, "You okay to do this?"
Her hands were shivering, "Yeah, yeah no I'm fine."
Klaus squeezed Kayla's hand as a warning and then began. He closed his eyes, and turned his head, as if he were looking around the room. He muttered something inaudible, and then began to speak clearly. "Hey you, Amelia..."
Emma was watching the board, and saw the planchette begin to quiver.
Klaus began to have a full on conversation with Amelia, though she remained unseen, "Yeah I totally agree. He's an ass... He did what? No way. Hey so while we're here I got a question: are there more people working with you?"
Kayla muttered to him, "Way to be subtle..."
He smiled and shrugged, as if to say "Oh well."
His conversation paused, and then he continued, "Well they just threw your body into that van, I don't see why you have to give them any respect."
The candles flickered in the room, a universal sign that Klaus had managed to piss a dead girl off.
"Do tell, Amelia. I'm all ears..."
"Well, thank you for your time today. Much appreciated." He broke his hand away from Diego, whom he was sitting next to. He held his palm towards the corner he was looking at, the words reading GOODBYE.
He then opened his eyes and sighed.
"Well, what did she say?" Five pried.
The group unlatched their hands, save for Klaus who gripped Kayla's tightly.
"She said that they are not stopping at Max, they have other 'subjects' as they like to call them." He took a shaky breath, "She said it would not be wise of them to pursue anyone here considering that Max had already compromised them. She sounded like they were international though."
He glanced over at Kayla, "You guys are safe for now."
She nodded at him, "And what about your family, back in Toronto?"
Diego and Five looked at Emma and Christina, respectively. "I'm sure they'll be fine."
Matthew looked over at Brendan, both were uncomfortable, "Yeah, um, we're gonna go now... seeing that there's no...immediate danger..." The two boys got up and headed for the front door.
"Think we freaked them out?" Kayla said to Emma.
She made a contemplative look, "Nah."
The girls giggled, and eventually a clamor resumed in the kitchen, this time for dinner. Emma pulled out pots and pans, Christina throwing bottles of spices onto the counter, and Kayla picking out an assortment of vegetables from the refrigerator. The boys set the table, and seeing that no other work could be done, they reclined around it, watching the girls they each had found themselves fascinated with. The brothers' lives had always revolved around fighting the next crime, and here they were, sitting with a trio of girls from across the continent, who were doing the same exact thing: a mirror effect.
