A guide on donations for the Venezuelan earthquake

This past June 24th, my homeland Venezuela was hit with two earthquakes category 7.2 and 7.5.

Why is this a big deal, beyond the obvious?

Venezuela is not dealing with an absence of government, it's actively fighting back a government that terrorizes, steals, tortures and kills. They've done nothing but try to bloke humanitarian help from other countries and close down any donation centers that belongs to the opposition.

This is a dictatorship run by murderers, and they are behaving as such. It is cruel on its maximum expression, but no one is surprised.

This political climate combined with the absolute scarcity of economic resources in Venezuela, means that the country and its people are entirely dependent on international help. all the efforts done to help people have been carried out by Venezuelan citizens and international forces that have come to the aid, which we are extremely grateful for.

If you want to donate money, always ensure that these sites and websites are not affiliated with the government whatsoever. Always donate to independent foundations and even individuals otherwise these funds will never reach the people.

All of those people that suddenly had so much to say about Venezuela’s “democracy” over how Trump incarcerated their dictator a few months ago are now quiet over the two major earthquakes and the huge devastation it’s causing. How little their current regime is helping and how they are deliberately blocking aid from reaching out and stopping any help that does not align with their political party. This is aiming to become the biggest tragedy in South America. And this is mostly because for over 27 years Venezuela has been under a corrupt regime that stole the money and never invested in the country. Currently, there’s not machinery or tools in the country that can be used to take the people out of the fallen buildings. There’s not even a proper rescue team. There’s nothing available to help the people and the numbers of casualties will be horrific. It used to be “hands off Venezuela” but when it serves a political agenda against the US government and salivating over communist countries you’ve never been to. It was never about empathy and care for its people who has suffered enough already. I’ve not seen any of those activists that were so angry at Trump for “removing Venezuela’s president” and were so eager to protest for Maduro’s capture doing something to donate for the victims there.

Just to be clear: this earthquake has been so devastating specifically because of the decades of neglect that happened during Chávez and Maduro. We had rescuing equipment in the nineties. We had qualified personnel that would have told people if the buildings needed maintenance. Some of those buildings that collapsed had already weathered the Vargas tragedy, actually, you can see them in the comparison photos.

I do not think "oh, Venezuela just has bad luck". No. We had neglect. Ever since I was a child, people kept telling me we were due for another big earthquake... Everybody knew we were due for another one!! Venezuela has one big earthquake every half a century, and rhe last one was in 1967, all we needed was to do the math and be like "well, we need rescue equipment, and we need to assess the state of this or that building so it does not FALL ON PEOPLE"...

But all we got was people making us hungry, poor, and desperate.

quick update.

the good news: we've managed to get fam and fam friends out of la guaira - they're now in caracas, temporarily staying in a compromised building while we figure out next steps. we've decided that the safest bet is to have them crash at my place, so we're trying to get the move sorted out, as we're a couple of states away.

the bad news: i live in a very small apartment, with my unemployed partner and my three cats. this makes a long-term stay a bit more complicated, and along with their house, fam have also lost their workplaces, meaning that their income situation is already pretty unstable.

i'm trying to figure things out. we will probably need to either rent a bigger place (big enough for five adults and six animals - dogs fam rescued and is bringing with them, aside from my cats), or find something for fam while things stabilize. i have a full time job but i think with good enough time management i could make it work with a couple more, and so i've been actively applying to other jobs. i might also be selling some of my stuff. additionally, i've set up a kofi - i don't feel very comfortable asking for financial help but i'm struggling, and i was thinking i could take requests (graphics? writing? want to translate your fic to spanish? need help designing pdf layouts? silly doodles? - i'm your guy, hit me up)

in case you haven't heard, parts of venezuela were recently hit by a series of earthquakes, affecting communities across the country.

as venezuela is my home country, all of this hits especially close to home. thankfully, my family and loved ones are safe since they were in cities not as severely affected. however, many others have not been as fortunate and are now facing the aftermath of these events.

years of political and economic instability have left many communities with limited resources and infrastructure, making it even more difficult to respond to emergencies like this. there are reports of people who remain missing, and many families are still waiting for news about their loved ones. rescue efforts have been made even more difficult by shortages of equipment, ambulances, and other emergency resources needed to respond to a disaster of this scale.

if you're able to, please consider sharing information, supporting verified relief efforts, or simply helping spread awareness about what is happening.

As a heartbroken Venezuelan here, PLEASE reblog, educate yourself about what’s going on, donate if you can, spread awareness. Venezuela needs solidarity, this double earthquake is just a curse on top of the already heavy dictatorship. They’re not prepared to face the aftermath as the security, economic and healthcare systems are nonexistent. They’re relying on external help alone as the government (what’s new?) is blocking aid from civilians FOR civilians as well as international aid who swiftly mobilized over La Guaira to help, to pocket any monetary donations and non perishables JUST BECAUSE. Not going to go into deep explanation rant on why they are miserable monsters as my blood is boiling already but please, whatever you can do to keep as many eyeballs and the damn regime accountable, just do it.
