Baldur's Book Club is an ongoing short semi-crackfic series following the gang as they meet for book club in various permutations.

The Warp and the Weft is my Gale/fTav canon-divergent series. Oneshots may appear in this series in the future; it is not yet marked completed.

Individually:

The Loom of Fate - [315k words (holy shit lol), E] a fix-it fic following the events of the game, but with some departures to fill some gaping plot holes in the game and expand a bit on Forgotten Realms lore. Slowburn romance, friends to lovers, eventual smut. Will expand into post-canon works including a full novel-length Fix Karlach sequel.

Lesson - [5k words, T] An expansion of the Weave scene, with some insight into bardic magic and some extra angst.

Strands - [2k words, T] A short piece of tooth-rotting fluff explaining the origins of the Wizardly Updo (aka the beloved manbun). Baby's first fic.

New - [3k words, E] A fluffy, smutty First Time fic.

Awake - [3k words, E] Another fluff/smut bit, directly following the events of New. Probably should have been a second chapter but I am still figuring this stuff out!

Unburden - [9k words, E] Two chapters of character work bookend a central chapter of smut. Some very soft dom Gale.

Pent - [3k words, E] Unabashed smut. Gale thinks, and wanks, and thinks some more.

Blood Promise - [4.9k words, M] A Wyllstarion songfic describing the arc of their relationship over all three acts.

Tapestry Is my newly begun post-canon series.

Under Cover of Snow - [3.7k words, E] Domestic filth; a bit of impromptu stand-up nookie before heading out to book club.

Instrument - [8.9k words, E] More domestic filth; bard doms wizard via a lecture on the properties of musical sound, particularly *vibration*.

Raider - [3.8k words, M] A short fic wherein Lae'zel enters the beginning of what promises to be a truly spectacular identity crisis.

Unravel [working title, WIP] a novel-length sequel to The Loom of Fate (middle entry of an intended trilogy)

Sune's Whirlpool: Chapter 2

A decade has passed since Gale returned to Waterdeep from his adventures – and his failed romance – in Baldur's Gate. He's busy, successful; alone but not lonely.

When a heat wave strikes the city and the perils of middle age strike his lower back, Gale makes his way to the baths at the Temple of Beauty. An encounter there with a beautiful stranger will leave him wondering how things could be different.

He'll have a chance to find out.

So I was talking about this with @aerin67 before but I wanted to share with the dash one of my favorite headcanons regarding the Orb.

So like, we all know at the tiefling party, Gale's like "oh I probably shouldn't get too excited while my condition is this unstable" etc. And for a while I was like "Oh, yeah that makes sense. The items stopped working so now it's unstable. The reason he hasn't had sex in a year was cos he isolated for safety."

But then I was thinking about how if he fucking dies, it takes TWO DAYS for the Orb to blow up. He can get his heart racing in battle SO fucking much and he never claims that's a danger, even after its destabilization.

So my brain started running with that and was like:

Maybe the Orb is only a danger now because it's been horribly destabilized. Before, it was probably stable enough that he could masturbate in his tower right? Even if he was isolated from other people, if he could masturbate, then he definitely would have.

And then I kept thinkin' more like...Does that mean that he also could have had sex before the destabilization? But he didn't because he hadn't caught feelings yet and by the time he catches feelings, the Orb is destabilized and dangerous.

So I was like...maybe he didn't know for sure it would blow up if he climaxed/had sex/got aroused whatever. But because this was uncharted territory, he didn't want to take the chance. It was a risk he hadn't had time to assess.

BUT THEN...I was like...

What if he's bullshitting you? Not maliciously, but like...the man had his heart broken by a goddess. He's been traumatized by his folly. He's been alone for more than a year. Then he meets someone he starts to have feelings for. He can suppress that easy enough.

But then they start to suggest they have feelings back. And that's terrifying. He's not sure how to handle this development, and he's not sure if he's ready to try again. He needs time to think it over, to decide if it's worth the potential heartbreak, especially considering he is a ticking time bomb. Not only could he get hurt, but so could they.

So at the tiefling party when that person flirts with him, suggests they have affections for him, he makes the excuse about "his condition is too volatile for too much excitement". Not only as a way to warn/remind them of what they're getting involved in, but also...he might be running from his feelings. At least temporarily.

And maybe Elminster bestowing Mystra's charm to stabilize the Orb is what prompts him to take the risk again because he knows the Orb won't blow up. He's had feelings for a while and now he gets to indulge in them safely, and that's valid. But there's still quite a bit of time that passes between then and the Romance/Sex Scene...

I just really like the idea that the reason he finally makes a move is not because the Orb has been stabilized, but because he has. He thought it over and couldn't deny his feelings, and decided it was worth the risk of heartbreak or pain to try love again. The Orb wasn't really the factor at all.

I want to ask a possibly incendiary question (whee) please bear with my curiosity here.

Why do so many writers give their characters Gale's last name after they get married? Like I'm sure there are several in-and-out-of-canon good reasons for it (I can think of several - he reclaims his name and therefore it is nice to share it, OC might have a good reason to want to abandon their name) but it happens so often and is so frequently unexamined it gives default status vibes, which feels weird to me.

Like this is a fantasy world where there is (ostensibly) not a huge gender disparity unless we're talking matriarchal drow culture, at least in the game itself. Once you get off the Sword Coast in the Realms there are certainly exceptions, but I have never seen those actually brought into play. (I also don't think it should be the default anywhere, but that's a personal opinion)

I've seen this overwhelmingly in femme Tavs/Durges as well; there are fewer non-binary and masc characters out there paired with Gale, but the degree of name-taking among them doesn't seem to be as high.

Why is that? Genuinely want to know.

Saucy Snippet Saturday

This is, probably unsurprisingly, from chapter 2 of time loop fic Sune's Whirlpool. I hope to have it posted Monday or Tuesday. The fic will not be explicit but will probably end up at a very firm (hehe) M for entirely predictable use of Mage Hand (not the world's most original sex toy but are you telling me you wouldn't use a free hand? Also we all know our boy would not be impeded by RAW casting time limits)

The read more is for spoilers if you haven't read chapter 1 and intend to.

The sheets were heavy, scratchy, distracting. So were his nightclothes. After an hour of hopeless tossing and turning he found himself nude and sweating in bed, staring with some irritation at the evidence of his arousal, rampantly erect in its thatch of silver-streaked hair.

“Stupid thing,” he muttered at it. It bobbed cheerfully in reply.

Gale gave in.

He hadn't spent the last four months entirely dead to sensation, after all, and the oil in the bedside drawer conveniently refilled itself every morning. This was just the first time he'd allowed himself to think of Vinca while thus engaged. The fog of lust around him took on a faint tinge of guilt, perversely only sharpening the edge of the pleasure he felt when the Mage Hand took him in a firm grip.
