Hey peeps! it’s been SO LONG since I’ve made a post! 

This is the latest version of Marisol! Yep, yet another version lol. I’ve been reworking and experimenting with her design for years and I think I finally designed the final version. 

I gave her a more cel shading style with her colors/shadows/highlights since Somni, once all vis dev is designed for it, will be a webcomic. The simpler the coloring style is for me to do, the easier it would be for me to create all the pages for the webcomic.

I plan on making a video talking about the evolution of Marisol’s design and how it relates to designing characters. When I finally complete that video, I’ll post it on here.

What do you think of her latest style? Is there a previous version you prefer?

An updated painting of Serilda for my portfolio. 

When I first colored her, Marisol, and Nephele, I thought for some reason that I had to paint in a painterly style, and that anything less than that would look unfinished. It took me forever to finish each painting, and I worried that my speed (or lack there of) wouldn’t be fast enough for whenever I got to break into the animation industry.

In the last year or two though, I’ve started to discover that even paintings with a simpler rendering style still looked finished. I was never able to make it look that way, but I’m finally starting to embrace it.

Does that happen to you too with your art?

Finally got to do a turnaround of my character Nephele! She’s shorter than me, yay! I included sketch process to final product. It’ll be added to my portfolio on my blogger website (delilahespinosa.blogger.com). What do you guys think?

To help me with choosing colors for each location in Somni, I created a collage for each country they're based on: The Dominican Republic for the fictional island Bohio, and Spain for the fictional town Iliri (respectfully). I wanted to compare the colors between the two countries. The color palettes below the collages are a selection of colors based on the collages. They have my notes with them. These swatches will help with not only with  coloring any background concept art, but also with the props of the countries and even with character costumes.

Currently working on updating my design for Marisol’s digital painting. Something about the design of the original render always bothered me, so now I’m taking the time to fix it. It’s a work in progress, of course, but I’m liking the updates a lot more. She feels more...alive.

Above are some designs for “Somni,” specifically for the character Marisol.

Whenever she goes into the dream world, she has on a different gown. Each gown she wears is inspired in some way by the design of her pajamas (which is what she wears to bed, just before she goes to the dream world).

I actually designed the dream world outfit first, then designed pajamas that would have a similar design/silhouette in some way.

Thanks so much for your ask! I’ve meant to do a tutorial like this for a long time. This is the way that I draw big girls, though it’s quite a short and basic tutorial. I hope it helps!
