so a while back user luunaanori said that this graffiti of suo is based off Raijin, a japanese god of thunder. and i pretty much think this take is true. and before i get into the chinese counterpart of this god, i wanted to say something about raijin first.

so reading stuff about him again, i saw that raijin is commonly depicted with three fingers— and they represent the past, present, the future. and i cant be the only one who got reminded of these panels

further, he is holding a leaf reminiscent to the one he placed on nirei, right ? i understood the part about him hearing the winds voice as furin, but maybe it doubles as nirei too, because nirei's graffiti was the twin god of Raijin called Fujin, the god of wind

anyway thinking about how nii sensei uses mythology a lot i was curious if there was a chinese counterpart of Raijin and indeed there is; he is called Leigong, the god of thunder in chinese mythology, taoism, chinese folklore, everything. the thunder gods are quite similar, producing thunder by striking their drums

i was looking at like possible differences between the two versions, because i think suo in furin acts differently from sunfei in the red chanpuru. and i think the differences between these two gods kinda fits him

Raijin is like a pure force of nature who tends to be a trickster, which i feel fits suos (relatively) free spirited and mischievous nature in furin

Leigong on the other hand, is more like heavenly authority who metes down divine punishment. he's someone who stands for justice, and almost an avenger kind of role, i think. the description about him being a bird-like creature, and having a smiling face with a righteous demeanor, stands out to me as well

i do feel like these fit the sunfei in rc we've seen, he seems to be more,,, authoritative ? calm, righteous kinda thing. i know we've only seen one chapter so far but like. yeah

MAYBE IM BEING BIASED but like certain aspects of this Raijin/Lei Gong are fitting in very neatly for suo/sunfei for me and that makes me happy

but yeah im hoping that someone who's knowledgeable in chinese and japanese culture/mythology also maybe kind of writes about this im just like. googling stuff lol. for me it was fun to think about though !!

anw im looking forward to what kind of symbolism is actually going to be used for suo in the manga so lets see 🙂‍↕️

Sakura clutching at himself whenever he thinks of Suo is quite interesting. Foremost it is a signifier that he’s frustrated, but it may also be emphatic of Sakura’s inability to reach Suo. It’s like he wants to grab Suo, but since he is no longer present in Sakura’s life the latter can only grab at what’s more accessible: his own body parts. His own inability to hold Suo.

Which is funny, because the one time Sakura has made physical contact with Suo was when he stopped him during KEEL. In which Sakura’s grip on Suo tightened while he was talking about his own shortcomings, even though Suo was stationary in his grasp at that point. Suo wasn’t struggling to break free either, but Sakura still squeezed him while preaching that “getting pissed off won’t help” for no reason??? When Sakura meets Suo again, he’s going to hold onto him so tight that Suo will never be able leave Sakura’s side again (delusional)
