If any character deserves a wicked style retelling of the story where they’re the hero it’s gotta be my girl Mrs. Danvers from the novel & 1940 movie Rebecca.

I mean like yeah, she’s pretty cruel to the MC, but it could be easily reworked to be a warning of Mr. De Winter’s true nature and a mishandled attempt at getting her out of danger. The man has a well documented history of violence of which she also definitely witnessed on multiple occasions. She also definitely knew in her gut what really happened to Rebecca and didn’t want another person dragged into the mess, while also balancing a sickening animosity that someone could move on from her Rebecca so quickly with someone so different.

Also letting Rebecca be both a terrible person and a victim would be so interesting, balancing her bad actions with genuine sympathy would be kind of revolutionary. A character allowed to have been cruel and difficult, while also making you want to throw up and even cry when the truth of her death is revealed. Especially if shes cruel to Danvers just as much as Maxim. That she’d purposely play with the feelings so Danvers obviously had for her and used it to her advantage, giving her just enough to keep her on her leash while also pushing her away when she gets too close. That they had grown through their teen years so close and so messed up that Danvers gave up everything to remain by her side up until the very end.

I just want to see Mrs. Danvers be somewhat justified in her final actions of the story, and get some level of revenge for the death of her soulmate.
