This is a (mostly roleplay) blog for a Sonic the Hedgehog AU in which his role is swapped with an OC, Crystal, who I made up for a fanfic that I haven't finished writing. (Please feel free to ask about it, I will appreciate it greatly.) This AU was meant to be a bit of a thought experiment.
Clearly, something went wrong along the way and now I'm attached to it.

Main Rules/Guidelines:
This AU is largely canon compliant, so please minimise the swearing. I know that certain characters are known to use the odd bad word (most notably Shadow) and that level is fine, but let's try and keep it at the same level as the games.
In the same vein as rule 1, please minimise the gore. While terrible injuries could and, I would argue, have been implied, we have not (as far as I recall) seen them in detail. I don't think we've even seen a drop of blood. That being said, I am not going to discourage you from permanent injuries - Crystal has lost her hearing to Metal Crystal. There is plenty of room for this.
Don't be rude ooc. I'll be fine with in-character trash talk, but I will not tolerate you being rude as a fellow person on the internet.

Main Muses
Crystal
The main character of this AU is a light green dog - Border Collie/Golden Retriever cross - with deep blue eyes and the ability to influence emotions with her voice, as well as the ability to reach unnatural pitches with it. She wears a variety of outfits, often to convey a certain message, but is known to like the colour red.
She doesn't like talking much, as she can no longer hear, but is quite happy to just be in the same area as her friends.
Has a toy robot of herself that she was given by @lumencrest
She also takes care of several Chao, although which one is officially "hers" is anyone's guess.
Metal Crystal Mark 1 Copper the Metal Crystal
A former enemy of Crystal's, and still somewhat like her canon counterpart. (Metal Sonic.) Unlike him, she has gone rogue, and now works alongside Crystal. She actually plays some pretty important roles following the events of Forces. These include during the Metal Virus arc and Frontiers, as otherwise these plots have conflicts that may not be resolved.
She can struggle to interact with people, as she's still afraid that they may not trust her, but can be quite cheerful if you do interact with her. She doesn't know much about organic beings though.
She has an interdimensional sister in Kaia the Metal Amy Kai - @refractory-facsimile and a Chao named Kira.
Sonic the Merhog
You can actually interact with this AUs Sonic - provided you can survive underwater, that is. He's a merhog - a hedgehog with an aquatic lower half instead of terrestrial legs - and does still have the Super-Speed for which he is known in most universes. He has a Chao named Rascal
Metal Crystal (Mark 2)
In the current point in the timeline, Metal Crystal Mk2 is nothing but a menace. She has little thought and little feeling at this point, but can be sent into Combat Mode via a remote control Despite their barely developed personalities, she appears to be quite close to Metal Sonic.
Metal Sonic
A metallic counterpart to Sonic the Merhog, created around the same time as Metal Crystal Mk2. Like Metal Crystal Mk2, he has little thought and little feeling, and is sent into Combat Mode via the same remote control. Despite their barely developed personalities, he appears to be quite close to Metal Crystal Mk2.

*after a little while of thinking i realise i havent really thanked the group that assisted me back with THAT incident back then so i pull out my remote and make a portal appear somewhere that i can begin my search for the group*
*it is only after stepping through and falling down into water that i realise that this is not the coordinates i set and my thruster is already waterlogged so thats useless until i fix that and there wasnt any nearby landmasses that i noticed so i dont bother to swim and just let myself sink down to the depths of the ocean with crossed arms thankful that atleast the rest of me is water-proof*

Sonic had left the cave Copper hid him in a good few days ago, and instead opted to visit Mara - who, thankfully, was doing very well. He spent a few days there before starting a relatively slow swim back.
He was maybe halfway there when he noticed Metal - and initially started to hiss at the robot. But, as he noticed, there weren't any others around. And Metal Sonic could easily shift to his merhog form under most circumstances, while this one didn't seem to have done so.
Maybe it was a bad idea, but he opted to investigate, starting to swim around the robot without uttering a word.
"Hi Swift!" She waved, her circular eyes briefly "closing" upwards in a smile. "I'm Bismuth."
"I made her a few years ago, before I properly went "Neo,"" Copper explained, quietly nodding her approval of Swifts new name as she filed it into her memory and helping him remove the thruster so they could clean it out. "I can't actually remember it though, but I can recognise my own code on the schematics."
"I...I haven't thought about it, to be honest." Bismuth seemed a little embarrassed. "I was never active for very long, and I had one specific mission. Then me and the others had to get back to safety and hope we weren't just dismantled. And before that...well, it's all just Crystals memories!" She let out a beeping noise, which seemed to be her version of a laugh. "And they're not even the most recent ones! I've been catching up, which has been surprisingly fun actually."
Copper nodded.
"Yeah. I mean most of the Shadow Androids are out of the question, but my Teams," she noted. "They're all accounted for. Turns out Metal Team Chaotix actually helped found the Resistance here! Although they're still avoiding Eggman...I'm glad I programmed that into them. Avoided a lot of "headaches," as Crystal would say."
"We haven't found any particular explanation yet, but I have noticed a lot of stray warp rings," Copper noted. It seemed she hadn't been keeping Bismuth entirely up-to-date on her investigation. "And I have noticed that...well, our universe is the exception."
That was saying something. In every universe she'd looked in on, it seemed as though Crystal outright didn't exist. She did have a reason to hide it from the others.
"And yeah, it sounds like they did! They've been helping find people after the Metal Virus..."
She seemed to freeze for a moment, though it was more like her version of a shiver. Her "daughter" seemed concerned.
"I hear they're doing very well at it, so that's good."
It would seem this universe was out of sync with others.
Copper gave it another quick look over before nodding and getting to work re-installing the thruster.
"Did you want to say hi to Crystal and Gadget while you were here?" She asked. She seemed to be good at focusing on one task alone - likely a result of what she was designed to do.
Bismuth waved back, starting to sketch almost as soon as they were out of sight.
Crystal and Gadget seemed to be decorating for a party, hanging bunting and balloons on the wall. They were all extremely colourful, and it seemed like they'd been planning this for a while.
Gadget was the first to notice them - naturally; she'd heard them come in - and waved.
"Oh! Hi you two."
Copper cloaked, waving. Her new disguise matched her new colours, even matching the silver on her muzzle.
"Hi! How're the decorations going?"
"Pretty well!" The wolf smiled, trying and failing to get Crystals attention for a moment before chuckling and continuing in a lower tone. "Guess she needs something to do, huh?"
"Yeah, she's been really anxious lately. I can't say I blame her."
Copper waved, glad to see Crystal out of her own head for a second.
"Swift came to say thank you, after we helped him a while ago," she explained, signing her words as well. She was cloaked, but Crystal had been known to get heavily distracted lately.
"Oh!" Crystal came down from the ladder she'd been standing on to hang decorations. "You're welcome! I'm glad we managed to help."
"That's the problem, there's nothing wrong," she explained. "Eggman hasn't been doing anything that any of us have heard of, and I just...I dunno, I guess I just can't adapt to it."
"It's true," Copper agreed. "She's started taking swimming lessons."
"From Sonic," her original inspiration cut in. "Since I can also become a mermaid now."
She was, in fact, wearing an anklet identical to Sonic's, as was Copper.
"Oh, It's our Mama's birthday!" She cheered. Gadget nodded.
"We wanted to surprise her, so we're setting up decorations while she and dad are out for lunch."
"Copper wanted to help but...well..."
Crystal seemed to be trying to find a delicate way to put it. Copper herself did not.
"My optics are failing," she explained. "They're mostly functional, but I can't see colour anymore. Which is unhelpful when you're looking for decorations, or putting them up." She seemed to sigh. "My targeting system's gone out too. If I wasn't prepared I'd be at the end of my run. I mean technically I am, but still."

Sonic had known he'd forgotten to tell him something.
*im standing around without much really to do, mach is away to do his own thing for a bit, hmm what should i do?*
*after a little while of thinking i realise i havent really thanked the group that assisted me back with THAT incident back then so i pull out my remote and make a portal appear somewhere that i can begin my search for the group*
*it is only after stepping through and falling down into water that i realise that this is not the coordinates i set and my thruster is already waterlogged so thats useless until i fix that and there wasnt any nearby landmasses that i noticed so i dont bother to swim and just let myself sink down to the depths of the ocean with crossed arms thankful that atleast the rest of me is water-proof*

The first sign that you weren't alone that you would notice would likely be an odd silhouette, with a long, luminous pattern of interlocking diamond shapes.
Sonic had left the cave Copper hid him in a good few days ago, and instead opted to visit Mara - who, thankfully, was doing very well. He spent a few days there before starting a relatively slow swim back.
He was maybe halfway there when he noticed Metal - and initially started to hiss at the robot. But, as he noticed, there weren't any others around. And Metal Sonic could easily shift to his merhog form under most circumstances, while this one didn't seem to have done so.
Maybe it was a bad idea, but he opted to investigate, starting to swim around the robot without uttering a word.
*beeps that at most only a few parts would be damaged so it should be easy work and worst case i can just delay the repairs until after ive thanked and talked to them*
*seeing him still run so fast on land despite being a sea creature i want to challenge him to a race, but it would be pointless since he would just win right now*
"That's good. I imagine at least one of them will know how to help." He seemed thoughtful for a moment. "I mean, Copper definitely will. Apparently she found out she made a few robots herself, which is apparently much more complicated than I thought."
He'd wrapped his head around it pretty quickly, considering the civilisation he came from couldn't access that kind of technology yet.
*beeps that makes sense as most ive encountered were indeed nice*
*beeps that there are some with less flattering opinions on organic beings, but the majority ive met is leaning more toward kinder opinions though that may just be a statistical anomoly as most ive seen are former eggman machines*
"Apparently she was sick when she made them?" He grimaced slightly, seeming to know that he'd misunderstood something. But what else was he going to think when her only explanation had been that she'd had a virus? It wasn't as though she'd though to explain it - and Crystal hadn't heard.
"She was worried she'd messed them up because of it. They turned out mostly fine though. I can't say much for the other Eggman Machines in this world. I haven't seen many, but most of them were hostile. And that's being generous..."
*beeps that he has the right idea that it is basically a machine equivelant of sickness*
*clarifying beeps that machine viruses just like machines arent made by nature so someone had to have created it, but viruses can come in many different versions just like diseases so the effects can only be guessed at unless you know the specific virus*
