Attacks from Doctor Eggman regularly came and gone, and the fat man had already managed to take over the two majorly populated sectors of Mobius - City and Metropolis - and had already started to build statues of himself as landmarks.
People who didn’t manage to escape from the madman’s clutches were put under his control - under lookout for any members of the resistance who threatened his reign.
Especially Silver.
The psychokinetic hedgehog was currently the only member of the resistance that was able to go head-to-head against the still-unknown enemy. However, the only reason the hedgehog cannot defeat the other was because somehow - Silver had never been able to grab hold of the enemy with his powers; although he could clearly see the other.
A long conversation between the time-traveller and the young fox genius had concluded a possibility that the psychic’s powers could not directly reach the other due to the enemy’s power of illusions; hence making them very - extremely - equally matched up in terms of their fighting abilities.
Vanilla and her daughter, Cream, were both stationed in the main base of the resistance, after it was deemed too unsafe to be living in the open world of Mobius. They had offered to be cooks for the entire team.
The three oldest recruits of the resistance - Gadget, Fuschia and Corvin - along with several other survivors found in the attacks were put under combat training, under the guidance and supervision of the ninja; Espio the Chameleon, and the self-proclaimed leader of the Resistance - Knuckles the Echidna.
The situation currently was a constant search for new recruits and survivors to be put in the resistance, for their safety and also their benefit of learning self-defense.
They had also tried, countless times, to get into contact with Rouge and find out exactly what on earth made the black hedgehog decide to fight for the other team again; and news - or rather, lack of - made them believe that Rouge was hiding Shadow from them.
Speaking of the female bat...
“Alert.” spoke a robotic voice. It was the repaired E-123 Omega that Team Chaotix had managed to salvage in City. “Communication channel links opened: Agent Rouge in contact.”
And in that instant, nearly every member of the resistance currently in the base - that used to be Silver’s - had their attention on what the robot had to say.
“Omega?” asked Tails - the one that managed to repair the former Eggman robot, even though it was just to barely-operational order. “Is Rouge really trying to get into contact with you?”
“Affirmative.” confirmed Omega. “Respond, Agent Rouge. Yes. This is E-123 Omega.”
“Put your comms on loudspeaker.” ordered Knuckles, as he walked right in front of the mecha.
“Where are you, Omega?” came the female voice from the other’s now-amplified transmitter.
“The b-”
“Actually, that doesn’t matter right now.” Rouge interrupted before Omega could respond. “I’m stuck in Chemical Plant; and I’ve only managed to reach Mobius just a minute ago.”
At the other end of the call, the female tried to kick open the glass - or was it glass? - window of the escape pod once again; a violent kick. However, the sturdiness of the structure proved once more to be unrelenting.
The hammer that was supposed to be used to break open the glass was missing, and all that’s left was a dangling metal wire that was once attached to the mallet.
Sighing, she positioned her communicator in front of her mouth once more to speak.
“Come rescue me, won’t you?” she said as she laid back down inside the pod, getting comfortable as she wondered about how her hedgehog colleague was doing currently.
Is he safe?
Is he still on the ARK?
She didn’t have a clue.
The rations kept in the pod would run out soon, but a bag of chips caught her eyes. Raising an eyeridge before reaching a hand out for the treat, she wondered why anyone would have put in junk food in an escape pod.
Oh boy, I found this fic of yours a couple of days back, and I am currently reading my way through it and increasingly enjoying it. My favourite part so far is Fall of the Hero part 5. While the spelling mistakes and such make the text tad hard to follow sometimes, you are great at keeping up the suspence and drama, and you write some really good action scenes. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see what you have in store!
Since my story progress is going extremely slowly due to me having lots of commitments IRL and stuff, I would like to do a quick ask to the readers to participate in the development of the story:
1) What would you like to see in the story?
2) How would you like the story to develop? What do you expect to happen next?
Your answers can help me greatly in the story since I’m hitting a huge block where there are too many things to think about and I’d like some inputs to steer me in the correct paths.
Your story is great! Even though you don't have many notes yet, please don't get discouraged, you're doing a great job! Sending a lot of support from Spain 👍
Man your story its great!!! I love the story so far! Even tho you dont have so many reviews, your story is great and you can keep it up if you want, if thats what you like!! So, now i just have a question... Why is sonic inmortal?
Hey everyone I hope yall are enjoying the story.
I’ve been getting more and more busy lately so I can’t really put as much time into the story as I’ve had before.
But here’s a simple request from me:
Leave some reviews in my askbox about the story so far pleases if you have time.
“Finally, Shadow the Hedgehog…” growled out the enemy’s voice, as the mobian floated in the air. “I’ve got you alone.”
“What do you want from me?” gritted out Shadow as he stood up from the ground.
“Simple: I want you to suffer, like the pain you caused me.” came the response from the masked mobian.
His arms were folded.
“What are you talking about?” asked the black hedgehog, clenching his fists tightly, with the right fist positioned right in front of his own muzzle. “I don’t know you!”
“Are you sure…?” drawled out the other’s voice before returning to seriously, drippingly vicious. “Remember; six days ago, in the Mystic Jungle, you trash…!”
Shadow’s eyes widened in realisation and recollection of the past event that occured.
“That… was you…?”
“Ah…” mocked the masked mobian as his single eye glared maniacally at the black hedgehog. “I see that you recall. Now, it’s time to torture you; like you did to me, when you killed my entire squad.”
“Kill…?” Shadow frowned. “I did not kill them, they-”
“DO NOT-” shouted the enemy as he moved right in front of the face of the black hedgehog. “-LIE to me. I saw their dead bodies with my own eyes, you despicable hedgehog.”
“-it was a Chaos Blast only powerful enough to knock them out-”
Shadow suddenly felt the wind being knocked out of his body as he was presented with a harsh punch, straight to his guts.
He winced in pain, and when he opened up his eyes again, this was what he saw:
Blue dress.
Blonde hair.
Blue eyes.
Shadow stared at the figure in front of him - this wasn’t possible.
No.
This must be a dream… or…
A nightmare…
“Shadow…?” asked the young female human. “Is something wrong?”
Silver stared at the object presented to him in thought - his very own time machine that was returned to him after being analysed by the young fox genius: Tails.
“I’ve kind of figured out how this thing works.” Tails began to explain as he plugged in a cable from the main computer into his laptop. “In order to generate enough energy to open up a pathway through the fabric of space-time, it has to draw power from the planet’s Chaos Field.”
The base of the Resistance was now almost set up, with sleeping area, meeting area, and the big open area where they ate, and also where they stationed Tails’s computers.
“... but how did it malfunction?” inquired the white hedgehog.
“I’m trying to make sense of that right now.” replied the yellow fox. “When I scanned the general Chaos Energy of the planet, something was different from the usual samples.”
“Could that have caused it?”
“Quite possibly.” came the confirmation. “The energy signals of Chaos Energy is slightly different, and they consisted of more unpredictable fluctuations - way more than usual.”
Silver sighed as he took another look at the device. “That must have affected the time machine and altered the coordinates somehow…”
“Yeah.” Tails replied while he led Silver to the meeting area, where everyone was waiting. “The good news is; this discovery allows me to find out exactly how that masked enemy works.”
“How does that work?”
They walked into the meeting area, and Tails set down his laptop on top of the table and sat down in front of the device.
“During that fight, I’ve managed to get some strange readings off of that masked enemy.” Tails revealed to the mobians sat around the table. “The energy wavelengths that he has emitted had many similarities compared to the new Chaos Field readings of the planet.”
Everyone’s attention was on the information he provided. Taking it as his cue to proceed with his research, he continued sharing his findings.
“And I can’t seem to be able to locate any Chaos Emeralds. None of them exist anymore.” stated the young fox.
“What?!” Knuckles exclaimed. “That’s not possible!”
“But they really did; Eggman must have got to do with this.” the young genius presumed.
“Hmm…” the red echidna put a hand to his chin and unconsciously rubbed in thought. “Maybe I could check this out with the Master Emerald…”
Suddenly, Knuckles stood up in shock, with wide open eyes, as he looked to be recalling something from his memories.
“I forgot!” he exclaimed in sudden realisation. “I left the Master Emerald up there on Angel Island! Eggman must have been able to get it by now!”
The rest of the mobians in the room simply stared at the echidna as they made the connections with their brains - without the Master Emerald, they had even less of a chance of fighting back.
“Leave it to the Guardian of the Master Emerald to forget about his own precious jewellery.” Vector commented, as he began to pace around.
“Hey!” retorted Knuckles, annoyed. “I was kinda busy trying to prevent the taking over of the world?!”
“Perhaps you might want to check if Angel Island is still in the air.” Espio stated logically, with a calm demeanor.
“What are you guys talking about?” asked Fuschia, as Corvin adopted a similar, confused look on his face, while Gadget was just listening in with a look of thought; and being overall, lost from the topic of conversation.
“The Master-”
Suddenly, a sound of something huge and heavy falling onto the ground, far away, was heard, interrupting what Tails had to say.
“What was that?” asked Charmy, as he began to fly outside of the base of the Resistance to investigate.
Promptly, the others also followed the young bee, in order to find out exactly what was the cause of the loud disturbance they had just heard.
“Well, I guess that’s your answer, Knuckles!” laughed the young bee - quite at the inappropriate time - as he caught sight of what caused the crash; while the named red echidna had just stared with an open, gaping mouth, face full of horrification.
The huge, bouldering form of Angel Island had crashed into the massive deserts of Sand Hill.
Shadow held the female bat’s hand tightly, as he led them down several corridors, away from the computer room. Their shoes clanked loudly against the metal floor of the space station as they ran.
“Was that-”
“Yes, Rouge - we’re in danger.” Shadow cut her off, as they turned a corner in the corridor.
The worst thing was; although they knew they were in trouble, they did not have a single clue on the actual location of the enemy.
The two G.U.N. Agent’s senses were on high alert, as Rouge tried her best to keep up with the pace of the black hedgehog.
“Slow down, Shadow!” she cried out frantically as she almost tripped over her heels.
Annoyed and anxious at their situation, Shadow was forced to slow down at a more suitable pace for his work partner as they turned around the corner.
And they were presented with that masked, illusion-creating mobian enemy.
“Hello there, Shadow the Hedgehog...”
The hallway walls reflected a faint red as the mobian glowed with a threatening shade of red. He was floating off the ground, and his single exposed eye glared at Shadow with hatred.
Immediately, Shadow changed routes, and decided on another plan of action as Rouge was, practically; flung a violent U-turn back where they came from in order to get away from the mysterious enemy.
The masked mobian appeared in front of them once again after a short distance.
“Rouge.” Shadow whispered to the bat, and her sensitive ears picked up on his speech. “I’ll distract him. Get to the power room, take the Chaos Emerald and get to the escape pods.”
Lunging himself at the enemy, Shadow began to teleport around in the air using his own Chaos Energy reserves stored in his body, and engaged the enemy. Grunts and punches began to be heard as Rouge began to run.
Giving one last look to the fight, Rouge continued to make her way towards the generator room, so that she could retrieve the Chaos Emerald, and possibly provide help to her friend.
She racked her brain for the layout of the layout of the ARK: She had been here before, she just had to remember where to go and recollect her bearings in this place.
It was this room!
Opening up the door, she was greeted with the bright, glowing Chaos Emerald that sat in the energy adapter, right where it was before.
But the gemstone was shaking slightly, appearing to be disturbed by something.
Rouge stared in shock, and tilted her head in confusion.
A loud noise from behind her made her jump, and she felt a harsh push on her back as she fell onto the metallic floor with a gasp.
The masked mobian grabbed the jewel; removing the power source of the ARK, and the entire room went dark in an instant. It made the mechanical whirring of the generators stop; and the surrounding atmosphere became silent.
“Damn!” cursed Shadow, as he grabbed onto Rouge’s forearm - quite roughly - and yanked her up from the ground.
Rouge felt herself being carried in the arms of the black hedgehog, as they tore their way through the corridors of the space station. All she could see was pitch-black, but she could hear the sounds of Shadow’s jet shoes loudly echoing off the hollowing corridors of ARK.
She also heard the movements of someone chasing them, and she could clearly see faint glows of red following them, lighting up the complete darkness with an ominous ruby red.
“Rouge, I need you to go find the others.” grunted the black hedgehog as they turned a corner once more.
All of a sudden, she felt herself being shoved into a tight space, with Shadow swiftly engaging the enemy once more as she heard knocks and punches being delivered some distance away.
She could not see clearly; other than the red glow from the enemy lighting up the surroundings, producing two clear silhouettes of the hedgehog and the enemy. She watched as Shadow violently kicked the enemy away, as he grabbed at some object that she couldn’t make out in the darkness.
A loud, cranking noise was heard; and it was immediately followed by a:
PSSH!
Her eyes widened as she realised what had just happened, and her eyes further confirmed her suspicions as her body felt the motions and inertia of being put inside a moving vehicle.
Rouge watched through the glass, as Space Colony ARK distanced further and further away from her. She was surrounded by nothing but views of the galaxy.
Shadow had put her in a escape pod, and it was headed towards Mobius.
“Oh good, you’re awake.” stated a familiar, old man’s voice as he recollected his senses. “I was afraid I might have to bring you to an actual doctor.”
“Eggman…” Sonic groaned out after he took a deep breath. Looking up, he saw that he was in a tiny cell, and his limbs were bound with some technology unknown to him.
He noticed that he was sat down on a bench.
“I win this time, Sonic!” exclaimed the evil scientist with joy. “I’m not going to allow you to ruin this for me again! Eggmanland will now finally be built!”
“Good for you, Egghead.” responded the blue hedgehog as he stretched his muscles as casually as he could. “But I’m gonna have to burst your bubble sooner or later.”
Doctor Eggman grinned at him.
“You don’t understand, hedgehog.” replied the rotund man. “I have truly won this time - I created the ultimate weapon, and I have already gotten you out of my way.”
“Not until I die.” Sonic smirked right back. “Oh wait; I forgot to mention; I can’t die, Egghead.”
“I know.” revealed the scientist. “Do you think I’d not know about my enemy?”
“As expected of you.” Sonic continued to smirk. He already knew that his immortality was of no secret to the other. “But that just means you can never get rid of me.”
“I prefer it that way, hedgehog.” Eggman responded as he leaned onto the bars surrounding Sonic’s cell. “You can watch me while I take over the world; enjoy the show!”
“Trust me, Eggman.” Sonic said sternly, and seriously. “My friends can, and will get me out of here.”
“Trust me, hedgehog.” Eggman responded with the same phrase. “With my new weapon, nothing your friends do can stop it; so enjoy your stay.”
Sonic watched as his arch nemesis slowly strided away, with his hands behind his back. Eggman slowly walked towards a control panel, and pulled a lever.
The sounds of screens turning on their displays made their presence known to the blue hedgehog, as he looked to his left where it used to be a black wall, now replaced by thousands of feeds of security cameras stationed around the entirety of Mobius.
“Relish in the show of me - slowly but surely - turn the entire world into the long-awaited Eggmanland!” cackled the evil rotund man. “I hope you appreciate my efforts to make sure that you’re the first to know about every area conquered.”
Sonic looked at a particular display grid switching between security camera feeds of City: The place was destroyed, and practically nearly burnt to the ground, if not for the firefighters. All he could see was charred buildings.
“Oh, trust me, Eggman…” Sonic mumbled loud enough for the person outside his cell to hear. “I am.”
“Here’s the fun little game I’ll play with you, Sonic:” the evil genius seemed amused at his own thoughts. “You’ll be the one choosing where I attack next.”
The blue hedgehog chuckled in false humour.
“And what if I don’t answer?” came the hero’s response.
“Then I’ll just make use of that handy little device right next to you.” the scientist pointed to the right of the hedgehog.
It was a giant wheel of fortune, with different areas of Mobius listed down on the different, equally divided section of the circle.
“And everytime you move even slightly too much - like you did when you stretched…” Eggman paused for his own dramatic effect and amusement. “That wheel will detect that movement, and begin to spin for a new location.”
The Hero of Mobius’s eyes widened.
“You’ve already selected the next place - and how nice of you to pick out the other largest populated sector of Mobius.” gloated the evil scientist.
Space Colony ARK: The space station - purposed as a laboratory - built specifically for the development of the Ultimate Life Form, with the extensive, expensive project led by the world’s historical leading biology specialist; Gerald Robotnik - grandfather of whom Mobius knows as Doctor Eggman.
“What was that, Shadow?” exclaimed Rouge the Bat, immediately after Chaos Control.
The black hedgehog and the white bat were now currently located in the corridors of the space station, with the male mobian taking out a green Chaos Emerald from his spines, and channeling the energy to convert it into light; and the surroundings soon became dimly lit with a warm yellow light.
Debris were littered around every corner of the space station from its neglect since a few years ago.
“That was the enemy who made the illusions.” Shadow explained as he walked towards a direction, producing clanking sounds as his footwear contacted the metal floor. “We’re being affected by the illusions, and I don’t know how; or why.”
Rouge seemed to think for a moment as she put a hand to her chin.
“That explains that other Shadow that we saw, then.” Rouge deduced as she followed behind the black hedgehog in the dimly lit corridor. “Where are we going?”
“To the power room.”
With several minutes of following Shadow around, climbing staircases and navigating hallways, Rouge could clearly tell - with her time spent with the hedgehog - that every moment spent in the space station caused her friend to recall more and more harrowing events as he seemed to walk mindlessly while being in thought.
“... are you okay, Shadow?” asked the bat, softly.
The black hedgehog seemed to snap out of his thoughts and nodded his head, as he turned into another corridor. Walking a few paces, he suddenly stopped and opened up the heavy shutter door presented to them.
The female bat saw a room filled with stations of control panels, wiring beneath the floors and ceiling, and heavy-looking machinery in all corners of the room.
“Most of the ARK’s functions can be powered with a Chaos Emerald.” Shadow said as he walked towards what seemed to be like an adaptor to hold the said energy provider in a corner of the room, hidden behind some other machinery.
He gently placed his Chaos Emerald into the holder; and as soon as the green jewel came into contact with the steel conductors surrounding the container; a noise began to sound.
A whirring sound began to be heard, and it grew louder into a comfortable volume, familiar to the black hedgehog which seemed to be able to relax the mobian slightly. The station began to power up, drawing energy from the Chaos Emerald; which channelled power directly from Mobius’s Chaos Field, and fed it to the ARK’s generators.
Lights began to flicker, and turn on fully. Soon enough, the whole space station was lit up with the installed artificial ceiling lights, as the female bat blinked several times to adjust her visual senses to the illuminated environment.
“So, why are we here?” inquired Rouge as she folded her arms.
“This is the safest place I could think of.” came the reasoning from the black hedgehog as he walked out of the room once more. “And we have to find out about the enemy - the ARK should have enough resources for any research we need.”
“Paperwork again…?” grumbled Rouge as she followed the artificial hedgehog.
“Don’t complain, Rouge.” responded Shadow.
“But where do we start?”
“Whatever it was; it had the ability to hijack the brain’s functions, and alter what we feel, and see.” Shadow opened a door to reveal a room full of computer stations, and filled bookshelves in a corner of the room. “That’s where we start - neuroscience.”
“... I wish Tails was here; he’d know about these kinds of stuff.” commented the female bat as she followed Shadow towards a computer station.
“They should’ve managed to escape by now.” Shadow mumbled.
A subtle, but clear sound caught their attention, piercing through the hum of the generators onboard the space station.
The sounds of someone typing: the click and tap of fingers on the keyboard - every single little sound was audibly heard by the two mobians present in the room.
Shadow’s sensitive, biologically-engineered ears perked, as he tried to close in of the source of the sounds. Walking further into the room, he moved into the direction of the sounds amongst the many computers stationed in the room.
Suddenly, his eyes presented him with something he couldn’t believe.
Immediately after, a loud gasp from Rouge was heard behind him.
The pair of eyes stared back: a lifeless set of eyes - noted Shadow.
