A Single Lie
A/N: Heya anon! First, thank you! I feel like I’ve written a lot of similar prompts like this haha. Hopefully it’s different enough from the others! Hope you enjoy <3
P.S. I’ve had a lot of prompts like this recently, and while I do really love it, I’m running out of ideas for it. So, if you request one like this, just be prepared to wait for a while for I write it, unless inspiration hits me. I just want to make sure they are all different/unique!
“Sorry, doll, I’m stuck doing a stakeout tonight. I’ll be home hopefully around 6 or 7am,” Sonny said, already sounding tired.
You sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose between your finger and thumb. You’d been dating Sonny for just about two years now, and this was nothing new…but that didn’t mean you liked it.
“Yeah, okay. Want me to have coffee ready, or tea?” you asked. This was how you not-so-subtly asked if he was due back at work shortly after, or if he planned to sleep once he got home.
“Tea, please. I’ll text you when I’m off. I love you.”
“Love you too,” you smiled softly into the phone before hanging up. You tried not to think about the fact that Sonny would be in a car with his attractive blonde partner, Amanda. You’d met her before; she was nice, and you got along well. But you were also jealous that she got so much of Sonny, almost as much as you did, to be honest. You knew he’d never cheat on you, but you couldn’t stop the feeling from rearing its ugly head when you knew they were alone. Especially when he’d come home smelling like her perfume. You asked him about it once, but he was quick to tell you that it’s because they were stuck in a car together all day. And soon enough, you caught whiffs of other people’s perfume, and even cologne, from when Sonny would arrest people or be pushed up against them for long periods of time.

You knew Sonny had been stressed recently, though he wouldn’t tell you why. Usually, he’d tell you about rough cases, perhaps leaving out the more gruesome details, but you were always there to help him through it. So, when he evaded your questions with vague answers, it didn’t sit right with you. He was hiding something, you knew it. But what? Sonny was always so open with you, so straightforward about everything. It was one of the reasons you wanted to marry him. He was a detective, though, so you couldn’t really go through his phone or emails—you’d feel guilty about doing that, anyways. So, instead, when he texted saying he was staying at the precinct late, you decided to pay him a visit.
Takeout dinner in hand, you made your way through the doors marked SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT. You noticed Fin at his desk, but Sonny’s was empty…as was Amanda’s.
“Hey Fin, have you seen Sonny?” you asked, placing the food on your boyfriend’s empty desk.
Fin’s eyes widened as he saw you, but he recovered quickly. “I sent him and Amanda out to interview a suspect; I’m not sure when they’ll be back.”
You could feel anger starting to boil deep within you, and something else…betrayal. “Is that so? Because I texted him and he said he was here.”
“I—they just left. I’m surprised you didn’t pass them on the elevator,” Fin replied.
Taking your phone out of your pocket, you dialed Sonny’s number. “Hey, Sonny, how’s work going?”
“Ah, you know how it is; just sitting at my desk, doing boring paperwork,” Sonny said, chuckling softly.
Your eyes narrowed as you watched Fin’s face fall. “Aww, sorry to hear about that, hun. Listen, I’ll talk to you later.” You didn’t wait for him to respond before you hung up.
“It’s not what you think—” Fin started, but you were already on your way out of the precinct, seeing red.

You knew where Amanda lived; you and Sonny had both been there for game nights and drinks before. It didn’t take you long to pull up in front of her apartment, but you couldn’t bring yourself to leave your car as you parked right behind Sonny’s. Taking a deep breath and wiping the tears from your eyes, you shakily got out of your car, heading up to Amanda’s place. You knocked hesitantly on the door, suddenly unwilling to be there, to actually see your boyfriend there, to confirm his lies.
Amanda had a wide grin on her face when she opened the door, until she saw you, her face falling. “Uh, [Y/N], what are you doing here?” she asked loudly.
“Don’t try to be innocent, Amanda; I know he’s here,” you glared at her, pushing past her into her place. “Sonny, come on out,” you called.
When you saw him coming out of the hallway to her bedroom, a blush on his cheeks, a sheepish smile on his lips and his shirt half-unbuttoned, you felt a lump in your throat, your heart breaking.
“[Y/N], sweetheart, what are you—”
“Don’t, Dominick. Just…don’t,” you started. You closed your eyes, fresh tears streaming down your cheeks. Your voice dropped to barely a whisper, “how long has this been going on?” This was the last thing you thought was happening. This was the man you wanted to spend the rest of your life with.
Sonny’s eyes widened, finally catching on. “Wha—no! That’s not what’s happening here, I swear—”
“Uh huh, sure.” You looked at Amanda, who shook her head slightly at you, her eyes sad. “I’m just…I’m gonna go. I think I’m gonna stay with my parents for a little….”
“Baby, please, can we talk about this?” Sonny was desperate, pleading with you.
You turned to leave. “I…I think I need some time to think this through, Dom.”
“Dominick, just tell her,” Amanda said, his name in her mouth making your heart lurch.
“I—” Sonny started, and you glanced back at him. He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “Amanda’s been helping me…I’ve been trying to plan a…I’ve been wanting to propose to you, and Amanda’s been helping me set everything up. This is the only time I’ve been here alone, I swear, and we’re not doing anything besides planning the proposal.”
You stood there in shock. He was planning a proposal? With Amanda’s help? You wanted to believe him, but you still had the smallest kernel of doubt in your mind.
“Prove it,” you muttered.
He looked to Amanda, and she rushed down the hallway to her room, coming back with a small ring box. “I’ve been holding onto the ring, so that you didn’t accidently stumble across it in your place,” she explained, giving it to Sonny.
“Do…do you really want me to propose to you right here, right now?” he asked, suddenly looking nervous.
“You can get a redo later,” you replied, heart in your throat. Sonny hesitated a moment before he sunk to one knee, in the middle of Amanda’s living room. It would be comical if it wasn’t for the situation that led to this.
He cleared his throat, looking up at you. “[Y/N], I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, if you’ll have me. You’re the one I want to start a family with, to be the mother to my children. I can think of no one better to be by my side—”
“Yes, Dom, I’ll marry you,” you smiled down at him, tears falling again, but from happiness this time. “Save the rest of your speech for the real proposal.”
Sonny grinned at you, standing and pulling you in for a kiss. “I’m so, so sorry for lying to you, doll. I swear to you that this is all I’ve ever lied to you about; just the planning for the proposal.”
“I believe you, Dominick. I’m sorry I didn’t trust you,” you murmured, snuggling against his chest.
Amanda cleared her throat awkwardly, and you jumped, remembering she was there, that you were in the middle of her living room. “You two are adorable. What do ya say to drinks to celebrate?”
“Actually, I think I’d rather take my fiancée home,” Sonny said. “Thanks for the help, Amanda; I do think that your second plan is perfect. It’ll be for my redo proposal.”
You giggled against him, happy that he wasn’t cheating and even happier that you were engaged, redo proposal happening or not.
My fav part is that you’ve got Evans going on this face journey of delighted gutter thoughts, and then there’s Hemsworth, just nomming away nonchalantly like he hasn’t just made his buddy plunge suddenly and unexpectedly into nsfw mental image land
