Have a safe and realistically happy new year!
I just realised that the rest of the world doesn’t know about one of my favourite New Year’s Eve in Germany things:
Angela Merkel getting out her shiny blazers for her speech.
They’re only for New Year’s Eve. The shiny Merkel is very rare and can only be spotted on the 31st of December.
This year we got shiny with some sort of rococo pattern.
Silvery Merkel of 2018.
Shiny Merkel of 2019! I really enjoy the color this year.
An adventurous duochrome!
shinier than ever for 2020
As New Year’s Eve 2021 approaches I find myself remembering this post and wondering…
Will Olaf Scholz wear a stylish shiny suit? Can someone photoshop him into one regardless?
If he is in a boring black suit like I expect, will he at least wear a shiny tie?

We rise for our new health minister and Meme Lord, Prof. Dr. Karl Lauterbach, der mir einzig bekannteste seines Namens.

Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen (You have forgotten the color film) by Nina Hagen
An almost forgotten song by GDR punk singer Nina Hagen from 1974 suddenly regained popularity when outgoing chancellor put it on her wishlist of songs to be played by the German Army Band at her parting ceremony.
Merkel surprised everyone with this song request, but the army band was startled because there was no arrangement of this song for brass band. So within one week, they had to write their own arrangement and do the rehearsals.
