#white pine and pitch pine compete in my heart#white pine has the most beautiful fluffy fine foliage and it's so ubiquitous in the places i've lived. just THE forest tree.#but still stunningly beautiful every time! the purple plated bark!#pitch pine is just weird as hell you go you funky fire lovers.#hemlock for sentimental reasons and because their ecology is so interesting#they cast more shade than any other tree in the forests where they grow and they're also extremely tolerant of shade#mature trees make dark homes for their kiddos where nothing else can thrive#(hemlocks also have purple bark on the inside. peel off a bark scale sometime)#sassafras for their funky leaf shapes. how you have three leaf shapes on one plant. why. love it.#my favorite INDIVIDUAL tree is a flowering dogwood from my childhood home that unfortunately no longer belongs to my family#if the new owners hurt it i will kill everyone in that house and then myself.#not a tree but there's a hilarious little forest floor plant called bunchberry which is basically [taxonomically & visually] a tiny dogwood#another beloved individual tree: huge wolf maple in the forest behind my high school#i heard part of the forest was developed.. i hope the wolf made it#oh special shoutout to white ash for turning a whole gradient of colors in the fall#liriodendron your leaves are awesome#honeylocust: KILLER thorns. seriously look up honeylocust thorns.#met one once and later heard that a raccoon got impaled on that tree </3#also rip to my beloved hickory seedling which I tried so hard to nurture but a rabbit ate it#oh and the albino baby hickory I met once. it obviously didn't make it#<- very nonexhaustive list of great trees.#reblog#not art#:)
