Hey remember when US and Russia was all like “We’re the best!!! We’ve won the space race!!!!” But India sent a kick-ass space probe to Mars and the whole mission was fuel efficient, costed less and a roaring success in the first try and then they were like “…..wait no that can’t be true” and still have the audacity to call us “underdeveloped” or only view us as a ‘third world country’? :)

My Mom Needs a LUNG!

When you’re coughing up a lung, and medicine costs an arm and a leg (WITHOUT the use of alchemy no less) sometimes you need a little help. 

My mom has been working so hard to reach the criteria to get the lung transplant she desperately needs, but without the after transplant medicine, she won’t be able to get there. Some of the greatest accomplishments by medieval and renaissance women were accomplished over a banquet table or tea. And there were tons of women warriors (many and most of whom merely ended up casualties of war, as was the case for most warriors of either sex).

Actually making a significant difference as a female warrior a la Joan of Arc was near-impossible. Meanwhile there were numerous Kings’ mistresses who ended wars and created public service programs like hospitals over tea and therefore had far more positive, powerful, and lasting impact upon the world we live in today than most of the warriors in history, male or female. It’s just that most female accomplishments are often written out by historians, dismissed as being nothing but frivolous partying (when in fact said “frivolous partying” did more to shape the medieval and renaissance periods than 90% of the wars fought). It was a Sumerian princess in a tower who essentially invented literature, a Japanese noblewoman attending parties who wrote the first modern novel. 

Women who defied gender roles were awesome, yes. Women who used “feminine” pursuits to assert their strength were JUST AS awesome. 

“Other girls” were almost ALWAYS AMAZING. Just because the dudebros who have held the pens for centuries who reinforce the idea of “traditional masculinity = strength” have written out the importance of the banquet table, chivalry, and legends DOES NOT MEAN THAT MISOGYNISTIC B.S. SHOULD BE REINFORCED NOW.

“Proper ladies” were rarely, if ever shallow or mere baby machines, even if they were treated as such. We should not be perpetuating that. The pens are in our hands now. Use them for good.

Most adult animals play too. Everyone needs to play to relieve stress and feel better, and society would be much less tiring and depressing if everyone understood this. What is really frustrating is when society will only allow playing (which includes anything creative) as a form of capital-generating work. Do you draw in your free time? Then you gotta master your skills and sell your art, otherwise it’s pointless and childish. Do you play videogames? If you aren’t good enough to be a competitive player and make money out of it then what’s the point? Do you play sports? Better to turn yourself into an actual athlete or you’re just being immature.

This mindset is so freaking toxic. You don’t need a reason or a goal to play or be creative. You need NO REASON besides the fact that it makes you happy.

For quite a while, I used to hold a party in the summer and we’d have either nerf sword fights in the local city park, or water gun fights.

Now, we’re all in our 30s and 40′s, whacking each other with nerf swords (we had color coded arm bands so people who wanted to eat hot dogs and not get soaked could “opt out”) and INEVITABLY some other adult who was at the park would come up, watch for a bit, and very wistfully say “Oh, I wish I could do that, looks like fun”

AND we would PROMPTLY offer them a sword or gun. (we always had extras.) COME PLAY WITH US!

It’s Astonishing and Sad how many people, when offered the choice to play with a group of adults who are obviously not being judgy because we’re all smacking each other with swords, would “oh, no, I really can’t.”

Also? Making food is a fucking skill. Running a fast food kitchen is a fucking skill. Operating a drive-thru is a goddamn fucking skill.

I do not know how to do these things. I have a masters degree and I have no fucking clue how to operate a deep fryer or make coffee drinks. I’d probably not be very good at it, because that kind of hands-on, fast-paced work is very hard for me.

But thankfully, there are people who are good at it, so I can do my job, and they can do theirs, and we can benefit one another by putting our skills to use in different areas. People who work in fast food are not less deserving of comfort and security in their lives just because their skills aren’t valued like they should be. That is a myth developed to deprive people of rights.

My friend works as a medical assistant and I’ve worked at McDonald’s and Starbucks. You know there’s a lot of things you gotta learn in this typa job?

Like in addition to it being physically demanding (standing up for 4-6 hours straight, carrying heavy ice/coffee, constantly getting burned by boiling water and an oven, a lot of reaching and squatting (like a lot a lot I lost 40 FUCKING pounds in a year okay this job demands a lot from the body)), there are actual skills required. Also your skin splits from using so much antibacterial soap.

Do you know what temperature different foods have to be to prevent contamination? If it’s a “cold” or “hot” plate?? Do You know how long food can be out before bacterial contamination can happen?? Do you know the difference between say 1% and heavy whipping cream? Can you teach a chemistry class using milk????? That’s p much what you gotta learn to be able to do. My friend who works as a medic was surprised, because I do more in my day than they do, and THEY told me that. They were shocked how much I actually do; I am on my feet more, talking to more people, I have a working knowledge of food germs food born illnesses and chemistry, I gotta do the same shit with sterilizing my tools the same exact way a doctor sterilizes theirs. Etc etc.

There’s no such thing as an unskilled job. There are only undervalued skills.
