Ya'll remember how online games made specifically for children were programmed in a way that made it practically impossible to share your personal info?
When age, gender, location was censured like profanity in the name of protecting kids?
But suddenly the Only Way to keep children safe online is to make sure that they have 0 privacy?
Yeah ok. Sure. For the children.
"This week I discovered the same pattern, executed by Google. Google Chrome is reaching into users' machines and writing a 4 GB on-device AI model file to disk without asking."
Google Chrome is downloading a 4 GB Gemini Nano model onto users' machines without consent, with no opt-in, no opt-out short of enterprise t
pretty sure I did the chrome//flags thing a while ago, but also i switched to firefox, which is not without the occasional bullshit, but is vastly less bullshitty than chrome. This is why I treat genai "features" like the invasive blackberry bushes they are: cut, root, burn, and vigilantly watch for new shoots to uproot. I'm 54 years old and the world got by fine without genai for most of my lifetime.

The only ways to make the deletion stick are to disable Chrome's Al features through chrome://flags or enterprise policy tooling that home users do not generally have, or to uninstall Chrome entirely
...
Adding the file took zero clicks. Removing it requires (a) discovering the file exists, (b) understanding what it is, (c) navigating into a hidden user profile path, (d) deleting it (and on Windows, also clearing the read-only attribute first), and (e) accepting that Chrome will silently re-download it on next eligible window unless the user also navigates chrome://flags, enterprise policy, or platform-specific configuration tooling to disable the underlying Chrome Al feature. None of those steps is documented in the place a normal user looks - none of them is even hinted at in default Chrome.
Vimes and Sybil from the Discworld series. I love the hell out of these two, the true Powercouple of my heart
This drawing makes the round sometimes but it is also sooo old, so here’s the 2022 vs 2018 version
[Image description: Digital gray tone sketch. The characters Sybil Ramkin and Samuel Vimes from the Discworld series are standing close together, looking at one another lovingly. Vimes, a stocky man with a receding hairline and a 5'oclock shadow holds a cigar. His night watch armour has a visible beergut, and his clothes and boots are old and tattered. Sybil towers over him, resting one arm on his shoulder. She’s wearing a plain dress and a worn apron. On her screen right arm, a small derpy dragon is perched. End ID]
YES! THANK YOU!! I have ALWAYS imagined Sybil as being taller than Sam and it’s a JOY to see others do too!
an unsung favorite of mine

Vimes smiled. Someone was trying to kill him, and that made him feel more alive than he had done for days. And they were also slightly less intelligent than he was. This is a quality you should always pray for in your would-be murderer.

not gonna lie, i’ve been looking at the moon a bit differently every night since artemis ii. feels like we know her a bit better, now.
Stop volunteering to be the village sacrifice we all know you're not a virgin. The dragon probably wouldn't even be into you.
Untie yourself from that altar right now.
Look. I didn't want to say anything because it's kind of a touchy subject, but the dragon doesn't actually take these "brides" back to its lair full of riches and add them to a harem. Okay? It's a big fucking lizard with a brain the size of an orange, it just roasts and eats them.
That's why we always pick the most useless airhead to sacrifice come harvest season.
Now come on, get those chains off. Where did you even get these? Oh you made them? See that's the kind of craftsmanship the village needs you for. We'll have a big orgy after the ritual and if you want a bunch of us will dress up as dragons and take turns having a go at you. It'll be nice, you'll see.
Yes, yes, I know, not the same. Well not all dreams are attainable, in the end.
"I dont think Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna unwillingly."
Cool, so why did she end up dead soaking in a bed of her own blood all the way in Dorne as far from her home as she could get in the country screaming desperately for her own brother.
It doesn't matter how it started.
The readers know how it ended: the dying girl screaming for her brother while the greatest knights of the land did their best to butcher men that Lyanna knew from childhood as they tried to rescue her.
In my experience, horror fans are by and large lovely people with a very healthy relationship to their genre of choice, but sometimes they fuck up and say something that in their ears sounds very affirmative of the movie of discussion and to everyone else sounds like the most sinister shit.
I mean the line that I think of first is “A kid dies in this movie.”
Which I suspect to horror fans is shorthand for “The director of this movie subverts horror tropes (wherein kids are usually immune to the monster/slasher/source of terror) to make something that is deliberately shocking. Seeing a child character die in this story is not a happy thing or a good thing, but for a horror story emphasizes that nobody is immune to the source of the terror, which makes the horror more serious and scarier.”
And to everybody else just sounds like “Oh this movie’s great! A kid dies in it!”
i cant stop laughing at this screenshot. Muting
absolutely major news out of georgia: the legislative session ended last night at midnight and ALL anti-lgbtq+ bills were defeated
Georgia Equality celebrates the defeat of anti-LGBTQ+ bills, including restrictions on gender-affirming care. Advocacy and activism prevaile
The bills that were defeated included: SB 30: a bill to restrict access to medical care for trans youth SB 39: a bill to deny coverage of medical care for trans people covered by the State Employee Health Benefit Plan SB 74: a bill to criminalize librarians sharing LGBTQ+ content SB 497: a forced outing bill for LGBTQ+ students HB 104 and 267: bills further restricting trans youth from participating in sports HB 671: a drag ban HB 1210: a bill to create en exemption for non-affirming parents and caretakers to abuse trans youth
People still doing "do you think voting can fix this" memes when the answer to the question "when did voting last end an authoritarian regime" is "two days ago"
Reblogged this earlier, but doing so again to add:
Hey we all remember 2020, right? When we voted out Donald Trump the first time??? That was a thing that happened a mere six years ago, and yes, America subsequently massively fucked it up and voted him back in, but we did remove him by voting once before.
Anyone also remember 2024, when Jair Bolsonaro was removed by voting in Brazil? And when he tried a coup, Brazil actually fucking punished him, disqualified him from running, and sent him to jail, instead of letting him off scot-free to do it again?
Also a spate of worldwide post-Trump elections, where the far-right wasn't in power per se but was gunning to be, and voting ensured they stayed out (2025 Moldova, 2025 Romania where massive protests annulled Russian meddling and forced a re-run where the pro-EU candidate won, 2025 Canada where the Conservatives lost after previously being up 20 points, 2025 Australia where the far right was just fuckin wiped out, 2025 Netherlands where Geert Wilders lost, AND SO FORTH).
And of course, the result referenced in the original post, 2026 Hungary where Viktor Fucking Orbán was removed by voting? Despite the massive structural hurdles facing the Hungarian voting public, far more than is the case in America even now?
(Lololol the Kremlin and Trump have immediately pivoted to "Orbán who? Never heard of him. Never knew him. Shh.")
Anti-voting has always been a deeply stupid ideology by people who want miraculous revolution to be suddenly achieved with no downsides and no widespread catastrophe, by doing nothing more than posting violent rhetoric online. Because they have no interest in actually doing the kind of hands-on, slow, systematic work that leads to positive social change in real life, and because they have no understanding of how anything actually works.
Relentless, hypocritical, purity-test politics are literally the best friend of authoritarians everywhere, because they ensure that liberal/left coalitions will never get their fucking act together long enough to put their weight behind the non-authoritarian candidate.
We've all said this before, but sometimes it bears restating.
Nobody has ever suggested that social change can be achieved solely by voting in decent or lesser-evil candidates. Voting is one tiny part of that effort. "Oh so you just want us to vote and do nothing else??" No. No, nobody has ever said that. You can and you should do a lot more than that: protest, mutual aid, fundraising, organizing, pressure campaigns, community protection groups, literally whatever. You can and should continue to hound the politicians you voted for if they're not living up to their campaign promises, as long as you actually voted for them in the first place.
The end.
Nobody hates Elia; we hate her fans who are toxic, who harass other people's posts, and who are also hypocrites who say they don't hate Lyanna and treat her like a victim, but then share misogynistic posts about Lyanna. Did you know that one of Elia's fans says Lyanna is a victim, but at the same time loves to read and posts fanfiction where Lyanna is punished, beaten, and abused just for running away with Rhaegar? The hate she receives is a response to the misogynistic hate that Lyanna receives.
okay? u realise EVERY popular character in asoiaf has some crazed rude fans. in fact, this applies to every fandom ever. u don’t have to like the fans, in fact u can hate them all u want.
but if THAT’s the reason u hate on elia, then im afraid you need to grow up. i would have HOPED in kindergarten, you learned that two wrongs don’t make a right. if u want ur fandom to have a better image, then have the decency to stop the hate train. ignore the crazy fans and you’ll look like the bigger person, while the stupid fan looks stupid.
in terms of the weirdos who read those fanfics, are hypocrites, but what do u want me to do about it? call the police? call grrm? inform their parents? host a witch hunt and burn them at the stake? all you can do is block and report them!
ofc there’s stupid elia fans who hate on lyanna. but there’s also stupid lyanna fans who hate on elia and her kids. who also call elia slurs. but everytime that’s brought up, all ‘lyanna’ fans deny it. in fact on x, ppl say tha it’s an elia fan in disguise so that more ppl can hate on lyanna fans. PLEASE. no one’s that unemployed.
btw when i say ‘lyanna’ fans, im more referring to rhaelya fans. in actuality, real lyanna fans i meet actually like elia and dislike rhaegar, and are incredibly nice people. so if ur truly a fan of lyanna, you would focus more on defending your fave INSTEAD of hating on someone else. especially if that someone has done NOTHING wrong. LMAO 🤣
Yet somehow it is the positive Elia blogs that get the nonstop anon harassment where Elia is called sickly, diseased, a whore, forced Rhaegar into an unwanted marriage, was unworthy because she only gave him two children, was fucking every relative under the sun so her daughter was a bastard, was 'spicy' and just excited to have Lyanna in their bed, was in on the entire disastrous affair, and incapable of any human emotion but fawning over Lyanna and her bastard.
Oh and forbid that Elia shows any kind of negativity towards Jon Snow after being nationally humiliated, held hostage with her children during a war, and the threat of her and her children dying violently.
But sadly, even the most hardliners don't hate Lyanna enough to say that she deserve her fate to die in the dust of Dorne crying out for her brother or that she was still sickly sweet in love with Rhaegar after the murders of her family.
That is reserved for the shippers because let us be real they aren't Lyanna fans.
They just want her to be their SI to fuck Rhaegar in.
