When actually shooting, my photographs have ended up taking a extreme turn from what I originally planned aesthetically. The exact subject has also seemed to develop and change although it is still very much about girlhood.

Justine Kurland’s work focuses on young girls, but me and my friends are young adults. What I noticed in taking these photos is that we are older, but still there is a part of us that seeks to test those impulsive thoughts like eat whipped cream from a can and touch an open flame.

I also used my iPhone camera to light a lot of the shots to control the angle and area of light in the photos. I purposefully included the dark outline of my phone into some of the shots too to insinuate that presence of performance for the camera, because although some of these images look kind of candid, I did stage many of them.

Portrait project diary

My work has taken yet another drastic aesthetic turn!

I had the idea that I wanted to print my photos (black and white) onto pink paper. So I made some mock ups on photoshop.

Will have to experiment with how I need to edit the photographs to get the right look when printing on the coloured paper.
