On the one hand, I do feel like I get what Garp is getting at when he tells Ace he can’t tell him whether or not he deserved to be born — that’s something Ace has to decide for himself based on what he does with the life he’s been given — but on the other hand, Jesus Christ, Garp, what a fuck catastrophic failure of communication. Ace isn’t asking a philosophical question, he’s asking if he’s an inherently irredeemable monster because of who his father was. Let’s maybe at least make sure we touch on the fact that no one deserves to be condemned because of who their parents were, that you took Ace in because you believe that to be true.
Since my mother died birthing me, I remember asking the EXACT same question to my grandma and if she would’ve told me the same answer as Garp did to Ace, it would’ve fucked me up so much so YEAH GARP WHAT THE FUCK
