Yes, but as a note: You must DECLARE AFFIRMATIVELY that you are invoking your right to remain silent!! If you just stay silent, you havenāt actually invoked the right. Itās an annoying legal thing, but you have to speak in order to stay silent. All you have to do is say āI am exercising my right to remain silentā (and then DO remain silent after that!).

Reader ChrisĀ passes along an article about differences in American Sign Language usage between white and African-American signers. Researchers investigating what they call Black ASL found significant variations in signs, signing space, and facial cues. They explain:
Black ASL is not just a slang form of signing. Instead, think of the two signing systems as comparable to American and British English: similar but with differences that follow regular patterns and a lot of variation in individual usage.
They hypothesize that these differences began in segregated learning environments, and continue to evolve in Black social spaces. The whole article is worth a read.

As a queer man of color whose fatherās family still live in Jamaicq, I was asked never to come back to the island by my many cousins. I have next to no contact from any of them and for good reason, one of them even threatened to come up here to the stastes and kill me himself. Contrary to popular belief life in Jamaica isnāt like the sandals all inclusive resort shows you. This manās death is a reality for many queer men and women in Jamaica. I just pray he rests in power, and the hearts he touched will be stronger for his death and continue his legacy.
Jamaica is extremely homophobic, it is sad to say but theyāll brush his death off.

Exactly, this was on a roll UNTIL it started talking about preferring raceā¦ no thatās not a preference.

NOT A PREFERENCE: I specifically like a girl from this race, because girls from this race are ____ (list of monolithic stereotypes).
Literally, the example they used was full of assumptions/stereotypes. If a guy sees (as in just looking) a Korean girl he suddenly knows all that shit about her? He knows sheās nice, he knows her culture background. Just from looking at her. Yeah, Iām sure. That example paragraph they used about the Korean girl was 100% not an example of the first tweet listed. The only part that wasnāt assuming was the good laugh part, with the assumption that he heard her laugh.
āPositiveā or āSeeminhly Non Aggressiveā stereotypes aimed at people of color or marginalized groups are still not preferences.

can i just remind you all that even when you are not talking to a trans person directly to still respect their name, gender and pronouns. the only exceptions are if it is a dangerous situation or the person is not out to them.
also please do not out a trans person to someone, it is their choice and that personal information should not be passed on without permission.
In calling me deceptive, Varner invoked one of the most odious stereotypes of transgender people, a stereotype that is often used as an excuse for violence and even murder. In proclaiming āZeke is not the guy you think he isā and that āthere is deception on levels yāall donāt understand,ā Varner is saying that Iām not really a man and that simply living as my authentic self is a nefarious trick. In reality, by being Zeke the dude, I am being my most honest self ā as is every other transgender person going about their daily lives.

Please take a few minutes of your time to read this. Iām not asking for anything. I just think that this is something that isnāt said enough.
My mom is extremely homophobic and recently, she found out that Iām gay. I didnāt tell her. My brother was talking to my mom and let it slip. And if I was not ready to tell her, I was definitely not ready for the backlash of her knowing. I was taking a nap when my mom found out. The moment my brother let it slip, he tried to take it back but it was too late. They started arguing and it woke me up. I couldnāt really hear what they were saying and looking back at it now, Iām glad I couldnāt. I later found out that my brother was trying to explain to my mom that nothing was wrong with me for liking girls. That my happiness was all that mattered. But my mom wouldnāt listen to a word he said. So my brother begged her not to say anything to me. Not until I told her myself. And she didnāt.
I could feel the tension during dinner but I didnāt bring it up until later that night. While I was getting ready to go to bed, my mom started asking me questions about boys. What kind of boys I like and stuff like that. Instead of answering the question, I changed the subject and asked about the argument. Her expression immediately changed from lighthearted to somber. In that instant, I knew I would regret asking. She looked me straight in the eye and asked me if I liked girls. The moment I registered what she was asking, I froze. I just stood there, staring at her. Tears began streaming down my face because I knew what was coming. And I wasnāt ready for it.
I never answered her question but my reaction was all she needed for confirmation. She became hysterical. She began saying things that I mostly blocked out because they hurt too much. I tried to tell her that it wasnāt a choice, that I didnāt choose to be gay and she told me that I needed to change my thought process because my father was going to be ashamed of me. My father died of brain cancer when I was four and I always feared what he would think of me if he was still alive today. Hearing my mom say that hurt like hell. I broke down and my brother tried to comfort me but I cried myself to sleep that night.
The next day, my mom acted like she didnāt just tear my heart out. She pretended like it didnāt happen and avoided making eye contact with me for a week. Now, weāre sort of back to normal but our relationship is strained. Sheās in denial, always making passing remarks about homosexuals, and it will never go back to being the same after that.
Thank you for reading this. When I told my friends what happened, they told me that it was bound to happen eventually and that it was better my mom found out now. But they didnāt understand the feeling of having your mom tell you that she would rather die than have a gay child. Let me tell you, it was the worst feeling I have ever experienced in my 17 years of life.
If you know anyone who identifies on the lgbt+ spectrum, please donāt out them. Even if they stole your crayon when you were in Kindergarten and you havenāt liked them since, donāt out them. I had it better than most people. I know children who have been kicked out of their homes for being different. So donāt out anyone. Donāt bash anyone for being in the closet. You donāt know their situation. When theyāre ready, they will work things out on their own.
