really intrigued by how daniel's book is described as a "bodice ripper" and "steamy beach read" like do we think he took the time to write out some loustat smut scenes or are the passages describing french bengali smokeshow armand just so unwittingly and undeniably horny that you can practically feel the writer's sweat through the pages

At a time when Netflix is getting roundly criticized for forcing its shows to treat the audience like we have all of two brain cells to rub together, The Vampire Lestat is out here volleying everything from 70s gay references to 1700s Dutch Republic references at the speed of light while saying, "You don't get it? Well, that's a fucking you problem."

And I love that for us.

I do have a fondness for how gothic and erotic lit had a certain barrier to entry. Like I do love more ppl getting into the vampire chronicles and I'll always be happy to have more Loustat fans but those books are weird and melancholic and erotic and philosophical and constantly testing boundaries and asking questions. And it feels like ppl are expecting or wanting "the vampire diaries but gay". The books have uncomfortable moments and the characters will do and say and believe things that make you double take but so much of the books are just "how moral can I be when nothing matters and I'm immortal?"

This isn't just a tale of gay vampires. It's a haunting philosophical treatise about life, mortality, morality, death, depression, incest, rape, love, regret, and the Pain Of Time. It can be fun and it can be gross and it can be wonderful but it's not for the timid.

i love the writing and acting choices that went into that "i think". "our vampire bond, i think". meaning this is not what usually happens and it's confusing even me, armand, the 500 years old vampire who turned you. meaning i am not sure exactly how much of this is the bond and how much the love we share. meaning i am just as unsettled as you are by the magnitude of our connection. it is fucked, yes, that after all this time and all the pain i remain capable of feeling what i feel for you. it is fucked that it took this long for someone to feel it for me.

Armand and Daniel's bond. the people around them "rapture" and the sound goes out when they turn to FACE one another. (eye contact?) Armand appearing at the bowling alley, Daniel walking to catch up with Armand outside the concert.

The connection snaps OUT when: Daniel yells, "fuck off" to Armand. the people return, the noise of the bowling alley crashing back in.

The second time the connection breaks is the ONLY TIME WE SEE ARMAND LOSE HIS SHIT. (and still, it's not much, but he's been smiling every time someone takes a shot at him until that point). It's when Armand yells: "I am your maker: I can't get into your head any longer"

You can hear his frustration.

The bond seems very proportional to their own relationship/trust/and fizzes out when one of them chooses to emotionally cut it off. I think they're both controlling it, they just don't understand it's their love (haha you idiots you love each other)
