10.3.15 Wawona Tunnel, Tunnel View, Yosemite National Park, California.
State Route 41 through Yosemite takes you to Tunnel View.
10.3.15 Bridalveil Fall, Yosemite National Park, California.
The first recording under Bridalveil Fall in Yosemite. White noise, matched with white noise, and people trying to clamber over the slippery rocks.
8.3.15 Hoover Dam, Arizona/California Border.
Deep inside the Hoover Dam, this was recorded at the Penstock Viewing Platform. The pipes can transport up to 90K gallons of water/second from Lake Mead to the hydroelectric generators. This was all I could grab before we were ushered out.
7.3.15 Kaibab Trail, Grand Canyon, Arizona.
Visually astounding and sonically silent. The Grand Canyon was the first stop on our Eccentric America tour. Our seven mile round trip to Skeleton Point took us around 600m into the Canyon. All sounds were absorbed into the vast expanse of rock and ice. Overwhelmed by the sheer scale, I decided to play my smallest possible set up: a few modules [noise, filter, delay] from my KORG littleBits. Barely audible in reality, I paired the recorder to allow me to accompany the overhead planes. The short extract filters away at the end to reveal the real silence of the place.
10.9.14 Innocent Railway Tunnel, Edinburgh, Scotland.
The duration of this piece was determined by a practical variable: power. The battery pack that was powering the loudspeaker had a limited life. Towards the end you can hear it emit its high pitched screech as it sounds its warning sound before finally shutting everything down. A definite way to end.
