Not One Direction
Microsoft once had a goal: to put a computer on every desktop. They narrowed on the best strategy and distribution model to do so, and focused all energies on it. Soon after dominating over 90% of the market, they began new forays.
Video games. Phones. Search. Microsoft tried it all. And that's the key word: tried. They were isolated silo projects with little coherence. With Google, it was easy to see how email, search, maps, calendar, and their entire suite of products were going to tie together. With Microsoft, you sometimes did even associate Xbox with Microsoft Office.
So now, some investors are demanding that basically Bill no longer be involved in the company. Which is fine - that's there decision.
But he is not the reason the Surface flopped. Nor is he the reason for the talent drain. Getting rid of Bill may help, but by no means is it the root cause of the problem that will usher in a rebirth of a dying giant.
Find a new direction Microsoft, with or without Bill. That is your only priority.
Nature posted a piece about a massive breakthrough - successful wiring of the brain to a prosthetic robotic leg. In the video, the man can be seen walking easily and even kicking a football - the first time this technology has been fully successful.

You are being told that you have a potentially fatal illness as if you were being asked if you wanted a receipt.

I was a middle schooler at the time, and grew bitter against the Yankees. Mariano was one of the hated villains. He almost never flinched in high pressure moments, and always snuffed out every last gasp chance for comebacks. While the young rowdy A's were my team, he was so perfect. His clean shaven head, his pearly white teeth, his calm demeanor - you had to hate him.
But then, years passed. The A's - Yankees rivalry cooled as my team struggled to stay competitive. Meanwhile, the Yankees continued winning, but fell into team disarray. Whether it was Clemens or Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees were continually mired in ugly off the field incidents.

But not Rivera. A man of utmost class, he always showed up prepared and ready to work. A consummate professional, Rivera managed to be the best and avoid the spotlight - a trait that can be said about few star athletes. Despite his contributions to the game, he only displayed his appreciations for the game, evinced by his amazing efforts this season to pay it forward.
In the end, Mariano Rivera commands my respect, and it's so moving to see somebody get what they deserve. Like his finishes to games, it was flawless.

These massive sandwiches are really something - with dozens of choices, they have every combination to satisfy your hangover cravings. From the "Cheesesteak Ole" (a Food Network's favorite) to the "Sh!tfaced," every sandwich has been designed to satisfy guilty pleasures' cravings. With their special sauces and unbelievable cheese (an export to many of the hotels and restaurants in the city), this is a hidden gem to be discovered.

Music: It's finally here. Maya Jane Coles' debut arrived earlier this month, and to smashing success. Showcasing the attention to detail that has defined her career, Coles' album shows off her deft production and ears for haunting melodies. While the album does not have a glaring weak moment, it does show less variety than other superb works this year by the likes of Disclosure and Kanye West, other artists that have compiled masterful works around a central album theme.
However, my gripes are very nitpicking here as Coles has established her arrival as a DJ after much anticipation for her debut. Comfort delivers, and it may not be too early to see what Coles will have in store for us for years to come.

Book: The Founder's Dilemma is not your typical start up book. Rather than focusing on business theory, it explores the questions every aspiring entrepreneur faces from a more HR standpoint. How many board members should I have? What titles should I give my first employees? When do I know it is time to raise capital?
It offers no real advice, which actually is the best thing it could have done. It recognizes no one-size-fits-all solution, and instead provides a well-balanced view of how both sides of the coin for each situation could work out, as well as each's pitfalls.
A must read for anybody who is looking to take the dive to start their own business.

Movie: This is simple. Are you a 8-year-old boy at heart? Then you will love what Guillermo Del Toro has done for you in his summer movie Pacific Rim. The spectacle of the special effects and ability to translate sheer size and force to the screen beyond numbing CGI makes this movie a surprisingly good rare treat.
Yes, the story is a bit predictable, and the characters are a bit one-sided. But this was not meant to be Pan's Labyrinth. It set out to a be a popcorn movie, and as the best one yet of the summer, it is worth catching.
